======== 1. NOTES BEFORE YOU INSTALL ================================

*********** IMPORTANT *********
* If you are re-installing over a previous installation, please note
  that this version of install does not retain any of EasyScroll's settings
  for applications you have made previously. Each new install will
  create INI files with default settings for many popular applications.
*********** IMPORTANT *********

* The installation program will backup your SYSTEM.INI and WIN.INI
  files during installation. They will be copied to the C:\EZ31 or C:\EZ95
  directory (or your install directory.)

* You may also install using your current pointing device and then
  switch the devices when Windows restarts. (But it's a good idea to
  power down when it's time to restart if you do this.)

========= 2. WINDOWS SOFTWARE INSTALLATION ==========================

  Mouse Technique (EasyScroll bottom switch is 2, or no switch is present)
***********************************************************************
1) Start Windows

2) Win 3.1: From the Program Manager, with EasyScroll floppy disk in the
   drive, click on the File menu, click on the Run... menu item, and
   type A:SETUP (or use B:SETUP if the disk is in drive B:).

   Win 95: Click on the Start button, click on the Run... menu item,
   then type A:SETUP (or use B:SETUP if the disk is in drive B:).

3) Follow the instructions given during the installation. Generally,
   you will just need to click on the highlighted buttons (or press
   the Enter key) at each step to perform a standard (full) install.

4) Remember to remove the install disk at the end before you click
   "OK".

  Keyboard Technique (EasyScroll bottom switch is 3)
***********************************************************************
1) Start Windows, but do not move the EasyScroll mouse until Program Manager
   appears. (or the Windows 95 main screen)
   Note: If you do not already have a previous version of EasyScroll running,
   it is normal at this point for the cursor not to be present.
   DO NOT MOVE THE MOUSE.
   Instead, use the keyboard keys to continue the installation;
   the install dialog boxes have instructions for using the keyboard keys.

2) Win 3.1: From the Program Manager, with EasyScroll floppy disk in the
   drive, press ALT + F to pop up the File menu, type R for Run, and
   type A:SETUP (or use B:SETUP if the disk is in drive B:)

   Win 95: Press the Ctrl+ESC keys to open the start menu, press the Up
   arrow to highlight Run... and press Enter. Then type A:SETUP
   (or use B:SETUP if the disk is in drive B:)

3) Follow the instructions given during the installation. Generally,
   you will just need to press the Enter key at each step to perform
   a standard (full) install.

4) Remember to remove the install disk at the end before you click
   "OK".

5) Also, if your EasyScroll mouse has a slide switch on its bottom, make
   sure that it is in the "3" position. Otherwise, it will only operate
   like a 2-button mouse.

Notes:
* All installation choices result in some text readme files being
   installed into your directory. In addition, the UNINSTAL.EXE program
   is always installed, taking about 350K of space.

========= 3. DOS DRIVER =============================================

*  In Windows 3.1:
   The Installer will also install the DOS driver into your AUTOEXEC.BAT
   file. It will add this line to your AUTOEXEC.BAT:
       C:\EZ31\DOS\EZSCROLL.COM
   In Windows 95:
   The Installer will also install the DOS driver into your DOSSTART.BAT
   file. It will add this line to your DOSSTART.BAT:
       C:\EZ95\DOS\EZSCROLL.COM

* If this conflicts with any of your TSRs or other memory arrangements,
   you may edit this file either during install (choose the "Manual" option
   from the Update AUTOEXEC.BAT dialog box) or after Install, from DOS.

* For the new EasyScroll DOS driver to become active, you will need to
   reboot DOS (or power down the machine). To do this, do NOT choose
   "Restart Windows" at the end of the installation. Instead, choose
   "Restart Computer".

* Note: some computers will not properly boot using this technique.
   In this case, just press hit Control-Alt-Delete to reboot, or power off
   manually.

* When the EZSCROLL.COM driver is loaded by AUTOEXEC.BAT, the driver
   screen message will indicate if the mouse is installed on PS2 or COM1, COM2.

Note:
   the EasyScroll installer tries to identify any other mouse driver in
   your AUTOEXEC.BAT file and CONFIG.SYS and REM it out. However, some
   drivers may have unusual names that are not recognized, and therefore
   will still be active after installation. Please manually REM these
   driver statements with an editor if any conflict still exists.

========= 4. AUTOCAD ADI DRIVER =====================================

* This AutoCAD driver is only for use with AutoCAD/DOS (protected-mode)
   versions 10, 11, 12. AutoCAD Rel 13 for Windows works fine with the
   Standard Installation of EasyScroll for Windows.

* The Installer will copy the ADI installation package into your
   install directory as subdirectory: \ADI. There are instructions in
   this directory (README.TXT) to install this package.

========= 5. UN-INSTALL NOTES =====================================

* You do not have to Un-Install a previous installation of EasyScroll
   if you are going to upgrade this version. Simply run the SETUP.EXE
   program and choose the Standard Install option.

* Un-Install attempts to restore the original input device settings from
   before the first EasyScroll installation. This will usually be successful
   only if you choose the same directory for each installation (usually
   achieved if using the Standard Install.)

* If you choose a different directory, the Un-Installer may not work
   correctly. It may restore the previous EasyScroll driver--not the driver
   in use prior to EasyScroll.

* However, the AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files are usually restored
   correctly each time. The backup files for these are named AUTOEXEC.OLD
   and CONFIG.OLD in the C:\ directory.

* The backup files for SYSTEM.INI and WIN.INI are stored in the directory
   of the *initial* EasyScroll installation (i.e. C:\EZ31 or C:\EZ95).

* Subsequent installations do not overwrite these key backup files if
   the installer finds them present in the installation directory.

* The *most recent* SYSTEM.INI and WIN.INI are *always* backed up in the
   main \WINDOWS directory as:
      SYSINI.OLD
      WININI.OLD

========= 6. GENERAL NOTES ==========================================

* The EasyScroll mouse is primarily a Windows product. It cannot
   provide the special scrolling and program-switching functions in DOS
   due to the limitations of DOS. However, if you are running DOS
   programs in a Windows environment you can still use many of
   the special features as long as your DOS sessions are
   windowed (i.e. not full screen).

* EasyScroll runs minimized on startup, by default. So if it is not already
   running in Windows when you click on it, it will appear briefly then
   hide itself. This behavior can be changed from EasyScroll's control menu--
   click the box in the upper left corner of the EasyScroll window.

* Modified, but unsaved settings are colored red in the EasyScroll windows.
   Currently, if you modify a setting, then return it to its original value,
   it stays red. This is normal.

*  In Windows 3.1:
   Some low-level utility programs like AntiVirus and DiskDoctor
   don't like EasyScroll to be around when they are performing some tasks.
   They may request you to close EasyScroll or "LOADPRO" (both represent
   the EasyScroll program). First quit the utility program, then popup the
   EasyScroll panel and close EasyScroll. Then retry your utility program.

* Some applications are programmed in non-standard ways, which limits
   their compatibility with other software, including EasyScroll. To avoid
   headaches, some special EasyScroll functions have been disabled when using
   applications known to cause problems.

========= 7. HARDWARE NOTES =========================================

* This version of EasyScroll works with PS2, COM1, COM2 only. It is not
   designed to check for the special addresses and IRQ's on COM-5 cards.
   This was done to prevent conflicts with network cards and other
   "IRQ-sensitive" hardware.

* A COM-5 card may be used with no problems if set for COM1 or COM2.
   Also, the PC Mouse 3D/6D bus card may be used on COM1 or COM2 if
   you want to use a 3D/6D Mouse as your EasyScroll mouse. Just make sure
   there is no other COM1 or COM2 port active in the computer.

========= 8. SOFTWARE NOTES =========================================

-----WINDOWS 3.1 NOTES-----

* The Install program makes the following changes to your INI files.
   This assumes a Standard Install onto C: drive.

   In WIN.INI:
     it modifies the LOAD line to include C:\EZ31\LOADPRO.EXE

   In SYSTEM.INI, these sections are added:
     [boot]
     mouse.drv=C:\EZ31\EZSCROLL.drv

     [boot.description]
     mouse.drv=EasyScroll Mouse Driver

     [386Enh]
     mouse=GVMD.386
     keyboard=GVKD.386

   In AUTOEXEC.BAT:
     it adds: C:\EZ31\DOS\EZSCROLL.COM

     any conflicting files will be REM'd out like the following:
     REM (By-EZSCROLL-Install) <conflicting driver filename>

* Two new INI files are created in your main \WINDOWS directory:
      EZSCROLL.INI - stores your customized settings
      PROSYS.INI  - internal system settings.

*  To uninstall EasyScroll manually
   (if the Un-Install program is unsuccessful):
     1) from Windows, delete the EasyScroll program group
     2) delete EZSCROLL.INI and PROSYS.INI in your windows directory
     3) Copy the corresponding lines from the backup files:
            C:\EZ31\SYSTEM.INI and C:\EZ31\WIN.INI,
        into the current Windows files:
            C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.INI and C:\WINDOWS\WIN.INI
     4) delete the entire directory in which you installed EasyScroll

If Windows still doesn't return to your previous input device:
     1) Use the Windows Setup program to choose a different mouse.
     2) Restart Windows as part of the Windows Setup process.

* Left-handers note: The EasyScroll installer will check your existing Windows
   mouse settings for left-handed mode and will automatically swap buttons
   for both Windows and DOS operation. However, when you run a DOS program
   from inside Windows but in the "windowed" format, not full-screen, then
   the mouse buttons will revert to right hand mode when clicked inside the
   window's frame. This is a bug.
      A work-around is to make EasyScroll reverse the left and right buttons for
   specific DOS programs you like to run windowed. Do this by popping up the
   EasyScroll panel when the DOS program is active and windowed. Then click Setup
   to open the main EasyScroll panel, click on "Right Hand", then click on Save
   to save to just that DOS application. Then when you click OK, the mouse
   buttons will be left-handed inside that DOS program's frame.
      Incidentally, on the frame itself, the buttons will act right-handed; but
   when you switch to a another program, "normal" left-hand mode will return.

-----WINDOWS 95 NOTES-----

    The Windows setup procedure makes the following changes to the system.

    The following files are expanded from the EasyScroll Mouse
    software diskette to the WINDOWS\SYSTEM subdirectory:

    geniezm.vxd        ( Virtual driver )
    gmcplx.dll         ( Control panel extention )

    To the WINDOWS\INF

    geniezm.inf ( INF file for EasyScroll Mouse )

    To the destination directory(ie. C:\EZ95)
    ezscroll.dll       ( dll file )
    geniezm.exe        ( EasyScroll Mouse execute file )

========  9. INSTALLER TECHNICAL NOTES ==============================

* The Install program takes into consideration other mouse drivers that
   may have already been configured for DOS or Windows. In updating the
   system files, it tries to identify and "REM out" those drivers that it
   recognizes to prevent conflicts with EasyScroll drivers. The drivers found
   in AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS are modified with "REM (by-EZSCROLL-Install)".
   This allows the EasyScroll Uninstaller to recognize which statements need to
   be un-REM'd. Please do not edit the "REM (by-EZSCROLL-Install)" text or
   the Uninstall feature may not work properly.

* As of this release, most of the common mouse drivers from Microsoft,
   Logitech, Genius, etc., are REM'd out by the Installation program.
   However, it is likely that new driver names in the future may escape
   detection and thus will still be present. EasyScroll should still take
   precedence since if the Installer doesn't recognize a driver it will add
   the EasyScroll driver to the top of AUTOEXEC.BAT (the first DOS mouse driver
   listed in AUTOEXEC.BAT gets control).
      Only an unknown DOS mouse driver loaded in the CONFIG.SYS file will
   defeat this logic. However, CONFIG.SYS-based drivers are no longer common
   so this is not expected to be a concern. If you notice the EasyScroll DOS
   driver not loading or receiving a message such as "Driver already loaded",
   then look in CONFIG.SYS for a mouse driver reference such as:
        DEVICE=XYZmouse.sys
   and REM it out.

* Here is the list of drivers currently recognized and REM'd out in
   AUTOEXEC.BAT & CONFIG.SYS:
                                MOUSE        NPOINT        XPOINT
                                MSCMOUSE     MTB           IMOUSE
                                GMOUSE       CLICK
                                MSC3D        LOGIMENU

* The Installer handles Windows driver conflicts in a different manner.
   First of all, the main Windows mouse driver is loaded from the SYSTEM.INI
   file using the "mouse.drv=" statement in the [Boot] section. This is well
   documented and is handled properly by all driver installers. However, the
   control panel programs that are loaded from the WIN.INI file are not
   standardized and can cause some problems.
      Again, if you run EasyScroll in WINDOWS 3.1 that EasyScroll attempts
   to identify commonly used filenames for other mouse driver control panels
   and will remove those entries from the WIN.INI file. These files are located
   in the LOAD statement. However, rather than REM'ing out the offending
   filename, it first saves the original WIN.INI file into the EasyScroll
   main directory, then adds the EasyScroll control panel program "LOADPRO.EXE"
   to the LOAD statement as follows:

       LOAD=C:\EZ31\LOADPRO.EXE

      More than one program may be listed on the LOAD statement, separated by
   a space or comma. For example, programs such as "nwpopup" (NetWare popup)
   may appear here. These programs automatically run when Windows starts.
      If the Installer does not recognize a control panel program for a
   foreign mouse product, you may see a message whenever you start Windows.
   The message will say: "Cannot find file '<filename>' specified in win.ini".
   To prevent this message from occurring again, exit Windows and open the
   WIN.INI file in the main WINDOWS directory. Then look for the LOAD=
   statement and delete the <filename> from the LOAD= statement. Always leave
   exactly 1 space between any remaining filenames and no spaces after the
   "=" sign.

* Here is the list of drivers currently recognized and removed from the
   WIN.INI LOAD= statement:
                   POINTER.EXE     ICECPLAP.EXE
                   WBUTTONS.EXE    WMOUSECC.EXE ( may appear in RUN= )
                   WCURSOR.EXE     GUI.EXE
                   SCA.EXE         XPOINT.EXE
                   MOUSEX16.EXE

* The original WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI files are copied to the EasyScroll
   install directory. If necessary to restore the original Windows
   configuration, these files may be used as backups. This is useful if
   multiple installations of different drivers or manual editing has
   confused the EasyScroll Uninstaller and prevented a clean recovery.
   Note: you may save these in a different directory for future use,
   since a full Uninstall will delete the EasyScroll directory and its contents,
   thus deleting these files.

* To provide additional recovery methods, the EasyScroll Installer backs up
   the current WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI files before modifying them. These are
   saved as WININI.OLD and SYSINI.OLD in the main WINDOWS directory.
      Thus, you may manually restore the most recently working Windows
   settings prior to a EasyScroll installation by copying these files back into
   the WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI files.

======== 10. SPECIFIC PROBLEMS ======================================

* There are currently some problems with programs created with the Delphi
   package. If SmartScrolling doesn't work, then set the roller to a function
   such as PageUp/Down Keys.

* The Button Find feature does not always work. This is due to the use
   of non-standard windows in some applications and is common to other
   implementations of this feature.

* The Save Positions item in the EasyScroll control menu does not work
   correctly. Usually, the EasyScroll panel appears in the upper-left of the
   display.

* Using scrolling functions like 'PageUp/Down Keys' in windowed-DOS
   sessions does not always work.

* The Reset to Factory Settings option in the Revert... dialog box
   is not currently available. It is grayed out and not selectable.
   To return to the factory settings, copy the EZSCROLL.INI file from
   the setup disk to the Windows directory (example: C:\WINDOWS).
   However, do not copy the PROSYS.INI file; this is specially
   configured during installation.
