To upgrade the IBM 56000 Fax Internal modem, the following files are
provided in a single ZIP file (V90_1216). You should store these files in a directory
on your local hard drive or on a diskette. Note: to use DOSFLASH.EXE it must
be on a hard drive.

  V90UGW.EXE   - Windows 95/Windows NT upgrade utility
  DOSFLASH.EXE   - DOS/Windows 3.x/OS2 upgrade utility
  MDMIBMAV.INF  - INF file for Windows 95/Windows NT
  README.TXT    - This file of information and instructions

----------  Update Features  --------------------------

This update for your IBM 56K Data/Fax modem provides the following
changes:
 - It adds support for the ITU-T V.90 56K draft standard
 - It also maintains support for the earlier x2 56K protocol

----------  About this utility  -----------------------

These utilities will update the modem firmware to the latest ITU V.90 draft
standard.  The new installation file (MDMIBMAV.INF) contains all the connect
messages associated with the new standard.  Once the modem has been upgraded,
this INF file should be used as the driver for any future installations of
the modem to insure proper reporting of connection speeds.

To make V.90 connections, the modem requires that you connect to a V.90
compatible service provider, and have an analog phone connection through
the phone system that makes no more than one analog to digital transition.
If these requirements are not met, the modem will attempt to make an x2
connection.  If that fails, the modem will attempt to make a V.34 connection
(up to 33.6Kbps speed).

NOTE: The modem must installed and properly working before attempting the
upgrade.  Also end any communications applications that may be using the modem
before starting the upgrade.

------------------  Upgrade Steps  --------------------

Upgrade steps:
1 - Upgrade the modems firmware to V.90 by running the DOS or Windows utility
2 - Re-install the modem using the new installation (Windows 95 users only).

----------  Windows 95/Windows NT process  ------------

STEP 1: Upgrade the modem

The upgrade of the modem is performed by using the Windows 95/Windows NT
based utility (V90UGW.EXE)
*Note: The modem must be installed first for the utility to recognize and
       properly upgrade it.  The utility will post a "No modems found to
       FLASH" message in the Systems event window if the modem has not been
       installed.

   1) Run the update program
      Go to Start->Run and type a:\V90UGW.EXE (if the file is on a diskette).
      *Note: If the files are located on the local drive or another folder,
       that path must be specified instead of a:\
   2) The utility will query the COM ports and list the upgradeable modem
      in the Modem Type Installed field. This may take a minute to complete.
   3) Place a check mark in the Flash field box to the right of the modem
      you wish to upgrade (if it is not already checked) and click on the
      FLASH button.
   4) Once the upgrade is complete, click quit to exit the utility.
   5) You must shutdown and restart the computer to complete the upgrade.

STEP 2: To upgrade the installation (INF) file (Windows 95 users only):
   1) Click on Start --> Settings --> Control Panel
   2) Click and open the modem icon.
   3) Select the IBM 56000 Fax Internal modem and click remove.
   4) Shutdown and restart the computer
   5) Windows 95 will detect the modem. Place the diskette with the new INF
      in the diskette drive and follow instructions on your screen.
      *Note: If the file is on your local drive, specify path to the file.
   
                                             
Upon successful completion of the upgrade, the modem is now using the new
V.90 standard.


----------  DOS/Windows 3.x/OS2 process  --------------
                                             
  To use the DOS based utility (in either DOS/Windows 3.x or OS/2):
   1) If you are using Windows 3.x, exit from Windows 3.x to a DOS prompt.
      If you are using OS/2, open a DOS window.
   2) From the DOS prompt run the executable, followed by parameters
     a:\DOSFLASH [/B=s] [/C=p] [/I=q] [/O=b] [/F=l] [/E]
     [/B=s] = DTE port speed.  Default is 115200.
     [/C=p] = Port number to use.
     [/I=q] = IRQ to use.  Default is standard IRQ mapping.
     [/O=b] = I/O Base address (in hex).  Default is standard base
              address mapping.
     [/F=l] = Set FIFO threshold levels for 16550 UART.  Default is 8 bytes.
     [/E]   = Enable BIOS equipment flag checking.

    Example:
            a:\DOSFLASH /B=57600 /C=3 /I=5
            This will flash the modem located on COM3, IRQ5 at 57600.

   3) You must shutdown and restart the computer to complete the upgrade.
                                             
Upon successful completion of the upgrade, the modem is now using the new
V.90 standard.
