CDmax                                                 12/13/1998
Version 1.6 Build 1.6.8.0

CDmax is a 32-bit Windows Audio CD player program.
It was originally developed and tested on Windows 95.
I now use NT4 sp3 at work and at home as well
as the Win95 box. I hope this will enable me to do
a better job of QA testing.

Please Note
===========
1) Please set the mixer device that is controled by the
    volume component by accessing the right-click popup menu.
2) For CDplayer.ini "stuff" - the disc IDs used by CDDB and
    the standard Windows CDplayer are different. If you
    already have a local CDmax (or CDDB) library built up,
    you will have to re-insert a disc before its CDplayer.ini
    disc ID is known. I'm sorry, but this cannot be helped.

Version 1.6.8 changes
=====================
1)  new Track list editor
2) changed Contents to allow category to be changed
    allows for re-categorizing
3) fixed "no volume control popup menu" problem
    appearing on some systems
4) fixed "no disc" problem appearing on some systems
5)  fixed Repeat Track problem
6)  various bug fixes

Version 1.6.7 changes
=====================
1) added Cue (Q) button; when set causes player to pause at
    end of the current track
2) added Intra-Track Repeat; allows a section of a track to
    be repeated. First click sets start position; second
    click sets end postion and restarts section; third click
    clears. Additionally a click with the Ctrl key held
    down will clear.
3) Track progression scrollbar has been changed to a gauge.
    Same basic function exists. Additionally, holding
    down the Ctrl key while releasing the left mouse
    button will abort the change, if click/dragging to
    change position within a track.
4) added configuration capabilities to the number of clicks
    on the SysTray icon.
5) added .INF file for install/uninstall support

Version 1.6 changes
===================
1) Volume control now has a balance/volume orientation
    and a right-click pop-up menu used to set the mixer
    device that it controls
2) fixed problems with Pause/Stop on WinNT; Stop
    now resets to the start of the current track
3) added browser search to www.cddb.com
    and www.lyrics.ch
4) added several new import/export formats, including
    CDplayer.ini; has been changed to Load from/Save As.
5) added option switch that allows auto import from
    CDplayer.ini file if not found in CDmax local
    library
6) added command-line actions: -stop, -pause, -next,
    -prev
7) Added Single CD per file local storage type.
    Swapping from one file type to the other will convert
    your local file storage "on the fly" as you put in CDs.
8) added Shuffle function; you can randomly play either
    from all of the tracks on the CD or the tracks from your
    Playlist.
9) added List elapsed and remaining time displays; now you
    toggle the time display by clicking on the time
    display itself.
10) The SysTray menu has changed a good bit; there are many
    more items and I believe everything the player can do
    can now be controled directly from here, with the
    exception of the volume and the fine track positioning.
11) The SysTray icon can now be single-clicked to toggle
    the pause button. This allows you to pause and resume
    quickly without use of the menu. The icon itself also
    reflects the player state.
12) added Prev-> previous track option; allows choice
    between having the Previous function always return to
    the previous track or return to the start of the current
    track. If the player is within 4 seconds of the start
    of the track it will return to the previous track.
13) Log file functions have been added to the File menu item.

Version 1.5.4 changes
=====================
1) Volume controls have been re-written using the
   mixer APIs. Based on results reported from
   beta testers the problems under NT seems to
   be fixed. The controls now track the movements
   of the Windows mixer applet (for CD Audio) and
   vice versa.
2) "Start on disc insert" has been dropped from the
   options configuration panel. This function is
   now handle by the "Set Default Player" menu
   item under Help. This is due to NT security
   issues with people not using Admin permissions.
3) Authentication thru a proxy server has a new
   feature. Apparently some systems use the clause
   "Authorization" and others use "Proxy-Authorization".
   This has been made an option, check the one that
   is appropriate for your situation.

Version 1.5.3 changes
=====================
1) improved playlist, added ability to store the
   same track more than once in the playlist.
   Added shuffle to playlist. Moved playlist
   to Contents editor.
2) removed random mode. I had a number of complaints
   about the random mode, so I removed it in favor
   of the shuffle. I may re-add an improved version
   of random play at a later time.
3) Changing the playlist no longer interrupts the
   playing track. (Unless you remove it from the list)
4) An import/export feature has been added. This will
   be added onto and improved in the future, with other
   formats becoming available as I can work them in.
   This version adds Audiofile Internet Companion(tm)
   format.  More on this later.
5) Track selection from with Explorer. If you have
   CDmax set as your default player, you can double-click
   a track from an Audio CD in Explorer to change to that
   track.
6) various user interface adjustments

Installation
============
CDmax is distributed as a ZIP file containing two files:
1)  ReadMe.txt (this file)
2) CDmax.exe (you can check version info in the about box
               or by right-clicking CDmax.exe, selecting
               Properties and viewing the Version tab)

Copy CDmax.exe to the directory of your choice and run it.
(If you are updating from any previous version, copy CDmax.exe
over the other one)

Command-line switches
=====================

Switch	Action
------	------
-play	start play
-stop	stop play
-pause	pause play
-next	skip to next track
-prev	skip to previous track

To control which track is played, put d:\Trackxx.cda after
-play. Where d is the drive letter and xx is the track
number, with 01 being the first track, 02 being the second,
etc. If you double click a track from Explorer this is
what is passed to the program. Example :
  -play E:\Track01.cda

Features
========
Check the website listed below for features and future
development items. Please use the website as a source of
information on CDmax. It is a more dynamic environment
than this type of document.

Setup of CDDB Options
=====================
Assuming you have your Internet connection established, access
the CDmax Options panel and fill in the information on the CDDB
tab.

Submissions
-----------
If you have a CD that is not in the CDDB, you can submit it for
inclusion, using CDmax. You will need to supply your Email
address and the name of your SMTP mail server. Check with your
ISP if you are not sure of the SMTP name. This data is needed
in order to identify you to the CDDB and to allow for return
email if you should have a submission reject from the CDDB.
(more about this later)

Once you have entered the required data, submit the entry from
the main panel. You can submit changes to existing entries in
this way, as well. An email message will be formatted and sent
to the CDDB Admininstrators for inclusion in the database.

Important Note:
---------------
If you submit an entry and for some reason it rejects, you will
receive an email message in return from the CDDB. Please forward
this message to the author of CDmax at the email address listed
below. This will assist in correcting the software if there are
problems.

Retrievals
----------
There are a number of sites all over the world where the CDDB is
stored. To begin using the retrieve process you will first need
to retrieve a list of these sites.

First, you must specify your email address mentioned above.
This is used to identify you to CDDB on retrievals as well as
submissions.

A number of retrieval options exist. Two different access
protocols can be used, CDDBP and HTTP. And you can access
through a proxy server now also. Several different combinations
are possible and one or more may work for you depending on
your internet access situation. Check the website listed
below for detailed explanations on each of the options.

Once you have selected an access option, press the button named
'Sites' under the Refresh group. This will populate the
Site to Query list. When complete, select a site.

Additionally, there is a button to refresh the valid list of
CDDB categories.

You may need to adjust the number of seconds in 'Timeout'
depending on your response time.
