Boca Research/Global Village Communication, Inc.
October 1998

To allow for future updates and enhancements to your product, Global Village designed your TelePort 56 x2 modem with firmware that can be updated.

The term "firmware" refers to the software in the modem's read-only memory (ROM). By updating the firmware, you can quickly and easily improve the operation and functionality of your modem without changing its hardware components.

This Read Me file provides information about updating the firmware for your TelePort 56 x2 modem. It contains information about the following subjects:

What's new in this version of the firmware?
	Who should use this updater?
	Updating the TelePort x2 firmware
Special note for internal TelePort 56 users
Replacing the Gvpcmdm.inf for V.90 compatibility
	If You Have Problems

What's New in this Version of the Firmware?

Version 114.704.2 of the TelePort 56 x2 firmware provides a number of enhancements, some of which include:

	Support for the V.90 standard
Better x2 performance in some environments

Your upgraded modem will have dual-mode support for both V.90 and x2. It will automatically select V.90 or x2 mode based on what your ISP supports.

Who Should Use This Updater?

Use this updater only if you have a TelePort 56 x2 installed on a Windows 95, 98, or NT 4.0 System.

The firmware updater automatically checks that you have the correct modem hardware before updating the firmware.

Updating the TelePort 56 x2 Firmware

Before updating the firmware, quit all applications.

Warning: While the modem is being updated, do not turn off the computer or disconnect the computer from the modem. Interrupting the update process can leave your modem unusable. If the update process is interrupted and the modem no longer responds to the firmware updater, communications software, or fax software, contact the Global Village Customer Satisfaction department; a representative will arrange for a replacement modem.

***Special note for internal TelePort 56 users***

This version of the V.90 firmware may not support Windows "Plug & Play". If Windows "Plug & Play" is an important feature for you, do not use this V.90 updater. In order to update the internal TelePort 56 to V.90, it will be necessary to configure the modem as a legacy device using the supplied jumpers. Be sure to confirm the modem functions properly as a legacy device before updating it to V.90.

To configure the modem as a Legacy device:

1. From the Start Menu, select Settings, then Control Panels

2. Double click on Modems

3. Click on the TelePort 56, then click Properties.

4. Note which COMM Port your modem is on. Then Click OK

5. Click Remove to remove the modem from the system

6. Shut down your Computer and remove the modem

7. Set the jumpers for the COMM Port and IRQ. The settings are on Page 12 of your TelePort Users Guide.

COMM 1 and 3 use IRQ 4
COMM 2 and 4 use IRQ 3

8. Install the modem and start your system

9. If the modem does not Automatically Install, Open the Modems Control Panel and click Add.

10. Have Windows detect your modem, then complete the installation.

The modem is now installed as a legacy device

If You Have Problems

This updater has firmware that supports both V.90 and x2-mode connections.
It will usually provide better connections and performance than previous
versions of firmware in your modem. However, because Internet Service
Providers may have various releases of V.90 firmware in their servers, and
may change these releases at any time, there may occasionally be
interoperability problems.

Symptom:

You experience random disconnects from your ISP, typically within a few
minutes of signing on.

Workaround Action:

1) Right-click the Dial-Up Networking Connectoid and click on Properties.
2) Click on Configure, then Connection, then Advanced.
3) Under Extra Settings, write S32=82 to disable V.90.

Note: You should only change the Extra Settings if you are experiencing
connection problems.
