EMAILING SMARTPAD NOTES FROM YOUR HANDHELD:

For information on configuring your handheld so that you can email SmartPad ink notes directly from it, review the documentation accompanying PadFire software provided on the SmartPad CD or visit our Website at: http://www.seikosmart.com. In general, you can use one of the following options:
* Wireless Palm, Handspring Visor(tm), Sony Clie(tm) or TRG compatible modem
* Palm, Handspring Visor, Sony Clie, or TRG compatible modem (with RJ11 type connection)
* Digital cellular telephone with data cable
* Digital cellular telephone with IR link to handheld

In all 4 of the above, appropriate service is required.
It is also required that you install email software on your handheld.
Currently, SmartPad works with two email programs: Seiko Instruments' PadFire and Actualsoft's MultiMail Pro
A free 30-day trial version of PadFire is included with this product.

BATTERIES:
The SmartPen uses 1 AAAA battery. These can be found and purchased through most camera shops or through electronic stores. The SmartPad Portfolio uses two AAA batteries. The above-mentioned AAAA battery and two AAA batteries are included with the product. The AAAA battery is already installed in the SmartPad pen.

KNOWN ANOMALIES IN THIS VERSION:

1
Beam Support
Beaming from a SmartPad application with Elink box checked (enabled) will not work since the same IR port that has been reserved by the SmartPad applications is being accessed to beam records.

Beaming from within the eAddress, eMemo and eToDo SmartPad applications to a handheld will always work.

Beaming from the eDateBook application running on handheld with Palm OS3.5 is not supported for this release.

Receiving a beam from within the SmartPad applications will work as long as the application sending the beam is different from the receiving application.
To ensure that the beam is always received, we suggest that the user go to 'Home' by tapping on the silk screen icon on the handheld before receiving.
2
Serial Port Usage
The handheld supports only one serial port which cannot be shared between multiple applications and devices. Hence, it is not possible to have the SmartPad application active at the same time that a serial device such as a keyboard is connected.
3
Email
The SmartPad applications allow ink notes which can be of any size as long as the total number of pages does not exceed 16.
The ink notes can be emailed out as either EDF or GIF attachments.
Multi page ink notes sent as EDF attachments will go out as a single file attachment as long as the file size is less than 64Kbytes. In case the file size is greater than 64KB, the ink note is emailed as a collection of EDF files, one for each page.
Multi page ink notes sent out as GIF attachments will always go out as a collection of GIF files, one for each page.
Additionally, current version of Multimail Pro only supports ten page attachments.

The Palm 7 and 7x using the Palm wireless service do not support email attachments and therefore you can not email SmartPad inknotes directly from either of those Palms.

4
OS 3.5
The following OS3.5 features are not supported on this version of the SmartPad applications
  - Agenda view in eDateBook
  - 4X zoom on the Palm IIIC
  - Beam from within eDateBook
5
Pre-Palm 3 series
Palm Professional and Palm Personal models which have been upgraded to the Palm 3.0 OS or higher will not work with SmartPad. Only Palm organizers that were originally manufactured as a 3 series or higher work with SmartPad.
6
HotSync
The SmartPad applications only upload ink from the handheld to the PC. Inks received from other SmartPad users may not be downloaded into your handheld.
7
HotSync Manager 3.1
Restoring a Palm OS3.5 device from a PC running HotSync Manager 3.1 but without having the SmartPad application can cause HotSync failure. HotSync Manager 3.1 automatically backs up the PRC files from the handheld to the backup directory. Palm OS3.5 does not appear to support multi-segment PRCs - specifically eDateBook. Consequently, HotSync of a Palm OS3.5 device places an incorrect eDateBook PRC in the backup directory. This causes the Restore operation from PC to Palm OS3.5 device to fail. We suggest that in instances where the user would be using a PC with HotSync Manager 3.1 and a Palm OS3.5 device to manually replace the eDateBook.PRC with the one supplied on the CD-ROM.
8
Backup & Restore
Each SmartPad application on the handheld has an associated Backup bit. The Palm Data Base (PDB) will be moved to the PC at the HotSync if the Backup bit is set for the application. Restore on the PC remains inactive (Grayed out) until there is a PDB in the Backup directory. Selecting the Restore option will copy the corresponding PDB from the Backup directory to the Install directory. The next HotSync will move the PDB to the handheld. Backup and Restore are application specific i.e. the settings have to be made individually for each SmartPad application. Backup and Restore operate on ink notes. Deleting the ink portion of a note can be restored. However, if the entire record including the text and ink portions is deleted, they are not recoverable as they are treated as normal deletes.
9
Power Management
For Palm OS 3.5 Devices
The handheld will exit the normal mode and enter the power save mode according to the timer settings in the Preferences. Resuming ink capture within the 30 minute window requires a simple press of the power switch. This will bring up the application. All handwriting subsequent to this will be captured if the Elink is enabled.

For Palm OS 3.1, 3.3 Devices
The handheld will exit the normal mode and enter the power save mode according to the timer settings in the Preferences. Resuming ink capture within the 30 minute window can be done by either tapping on the handheld screen or by beginning to write on the paper pad. This will bring up the application. All handwriting subsequent to this will be captured if the Elink is enabled

If the IR communications between the SmartPad and the handheld is partially blocked, the low battery warning message will appear. From then on the Battery status will be displayed as "low" until the e-application running is stopped. When that or any other e-application is started the actual battery condition will be checked and displayed.
