1. Introduction
The full support of Euro Currency Symbol requires supports from

   o  character set international standard
      Operating systems
      Database
      applications

Although International Organization for Stadalization declared the new
standard ISO8859-15 in which the Euro Currency Symbol was defined at
position A4 on 15th Mar. 1999, Not all the existing OS vendors and DB
vendors have already supported this standard or any otherunofficial
standards in which defines this symbol.

1.1 Background

1.1.1 What is Euro?

   Euro is the single currency of the European Monetary Union which is
   adopted by 11 Member States from 1 January 1999. These are Belgium,
   Germany, Spain, France, Ireland, Italy, Luxemburg, Netherlands,
   Austria, Portugal and Finland. The name "Euro" was adopted by the
   European Heads of State or Government at the European Council meeting
   in Madrid in December 1995.

1.1.2 What is the official abbreviation for Euro?

   The official abbreviation for the Euro is 'EUR'. It has been
   registered with the International Standards Organisation (ISO), and
   will be used for all business, financial and commercial purposes,
   just as the terms 'FRF' (French franc), 'DEM' (Deutschmark), 'GBP'
   (pound sterling) and 'BEF' (Belgian franc) are used today.

1.1.3 What is the official sign of Euro?

   The sign for the new single currency looks like an E with two clearly
   marked, horizontal parallel lines across it. It was inspired by the
   Greek letter epsilon, in reference to the cradle of European
   civilization and to the first letter of the word 'Europe'. The
   parallel lines represent the stability of Euro. Euro sign is easily
   recognisable and in a few years' time it will be as well known as the
   the dollar sign ($). As an abbreviation, the sign is very convenient
   and it will soon be on every new computer or typewriter keyboard.

1.1.4 Other aspects of Euro

   Detailed information please refer to:
   http://europa.eu.int/euro/html/entry.html

1.2 Impact of Euro on IT and consultancy

1.2.1 Basic considerations

   The introduction of Euro will have various implications for IT, as
   they feature interfaces to the following significant fields of
   application:

   o Legal - Rounding, triangulation, conversion

   o Migration - Conversion, consolidation, legacy data

   o Technology - symbol support, hardware

   o Interface - Trading partners, corporate systems

   o Business - new processes, products and opportunities

1.2.2 typical points to remember...

   It is important to remember that the transitionary phase (start of
   1999 to end of 2001) is the "danger zone" for many companies. With
   dual currency operation (which ends in 2002), and the start of
   transparent pricing, you will need to survive intact. You are no
   longer competing against national competition, but against other
   Europeans on a far more level playing field.

   The following are typical points to remember...

   o Redenomination of all products and services

   o  Large preparation costs

   o  Little help from governments

   o Coping with a third currency

   o Entering and printing Euro values

   o  Adjusting coin-operated machinery

   o Showing amounts in both currencies

   o Adjusting invoices and related paperwork

   o How to obtain and process new exchange rates

   o Lack of a Euro currency symbol in computer equipment

1.2.3 SAP Euro solution

   SAP is prepared and ready with its Euro solution to help your company
   to meet the challenges of EMU. detailed information please see notes:

   broswer sapnet, use our search engine to look for your interested
   topics on Euro.

1.3 General information on Euro printing

1.3.1 Font Design

1.3.1.1 Font Dependency

   The use of Euro symbol in text is not subject to the same
   restrictions as the Euro logo. Euro symbol was registered, October
   1997 for general typographic use under ISO 10036 as glyph ID 8059 in
   international glyph register volume 1: Alphabetic Scripts and
   Symbols. The Euro logo was used for the registration as a base shape
   from which various font designs can be derived.

1.3.1.2 Font Support

   Big number of companies now offer various fonts for Euro. Keep your
   eyes open in order to get the real beautiful ones which fit you most.
   Here, worthy of recommending are:

   o free download fonts from microsoft website
      http://microsoft.com/technet/topics/Euro/symbol/symbol.htm#fnt

   o free download fonts from Adobe website
      http://www.adobe.com/type/eurofont.html

   o Mac OS Fonts The standard European glyph has been added to all of
      Apple's Mac OS fonts to be distributed with Mac OS 8.5. However,
      at this time, Apple is not planning to release the Apple fonts
      outside of the Mac OS 8.5 release.

   o IBM AFP Font Collection, Version 2 The new Font Collection
      contains the new Euro Symbol.

   o Xerox Fonts To see detailed information, visit their website
      http://www.font.net/euro.htm

1.3.2 Character set

   ASCII
   Since there is no workable way to redefine ASCII (0 to 127), it is
   highly unlikely to support the new symbol.

   ISO/IEC 8859-15 (Latin alphabet No. 9)
   In this new standard, Euro is defined at position '0xA4'.

   UNICODE
   Within the Unicode character set slot 20AC (hex) has been allocated
   to the Euro symbol. The symbol at U+20A0 is the European Currency
   symbol, and Unicode decided not to replace that character with the
   new Euro. The European Currency symbol is a circle with four short
   bars extending from it at 45 degree angles.

   WINDOWS
   The symbol has been added to the following code pages at position
   '0x80'; 1250 Eastern European, 1252 Western, 1253 Greek, 1254
   Turkish, 1257 Baltic, 1255 Hebrew, 1256 Arabic, 1258 Vietnamese, 874
   Thai. in 1251 Cyrillic, the symbol will be added at position '0x88'.

   Lexmark
   PCL Symbol Sets (Code position DEC/HEX)
   13U - Code page 858                 (0213/D5)

   19U - Windows 3.1 Latin 1           (0128/80)
   9E - Windows 3.1 Latin 2            (0128/80)
   5T - Windows 3.1 Latin 5            (0128/80)
   19L - Windows Baltic Latin 6        (0128/80)
   9R - Windows Cyrillic               (0136/88)
   9G - Windows Greek                  (0128/80)
   9N - ISO 8859-15 Latin 9            (0164/A4) - for UNIX
   IBM Code Page 858 for OS/2 and in Dot matrix PPDS printers
   For PostScript Adobe defined Euro at 240 in PostScript Level 3
   symbol font extended the current Adobe solution for Level 2

   Mac OS
   For Mac OS 8.5, except Symbol, the character has been added at
   Option-Shift-2(MacRoman Encoding '0xDB'), replacing the international
   currency symbol. For Symbol, the glyph has been added at Option-t
   (MacRoman Encoding '0xA0, previously unused).

   Xerox
   Xerox company added Euro at position '0xBA' in its character set.

   IBM
   IBM added the new Euro Symbol in all of its Latin 1 font character
   set.

2. SAP Solution for Euro printing

2.1 code page modification

2.1.1 SAP Characters

   SAP added Euro into 'SAP Characters' with number 156, name
   'euro_sign'.

   A tip: how to view 'SAP Characters':
   Goto transaction 'SPAD'->click button 'Full administration'->click
   tab 'Char. sets' ->click buttoon 'SAP characters'.

2.1.2 system code page modification

   Up to now, there is no support of Euro Sign in all R/3 system code
   pages which implys that storing this monetary symbol into R/3 system
   is unfortunately inapplicable. Don't be misled when you are so proud
   of yourself of being able to type it into R/3 systems and show it on
   your screens by using your windows. As mentioned above, since this
   symbol is not defined in the system code page, it can not be stored
   correctly, though GUI allows you to enter and helps you to display
   it. As of release 4.6C, we discarded this confusing feature which
   means the GUI does not allow you to enter any 'illegal' characters -
   characters are not defined in system code pages.

2.1.3 Front end code page modification

   As outlined in the introduction section, to fully support Euro
   Symbol,
   operation system vendors must define this Symbol in their code sets
   (also called as character sets, code pages). So far, only Microsoft
   enabled this support in its windows products, for instance, Windows
   2000 and Windows NT 4.0. Since SAP's frond end code pages are also
   mappings of those code sets of operation systems, therefore, we only
   add our midification into Windows code pages.

   Detailed lists of the Euro symbol added code pages see as followed:
   *    1160    Microsoft 1152
   *    1404    Microsoft 1150
   *    1405    Microsoft 1150
   *    1504    Microsoft 1151
   *    1614    Microsoft 1154
   *    1704    Microsoft Greek
   *    1804    Microsoft 1255
   *    1904    Microsoft 1257
   *    6114    SAP Unification ISO8859-1
   *    6124    SAP Unification ISO8859-2
   *    6174    SAP Unification ISO8859-7
   *    6194    SAP Unification ISO8859-9

2.1.4 Printer code page modification

   The modification is tending to be made according to the adaption of
   code point of Euro by different vendors. Indeed, SAP's printer code
   pages are mappings of code pages of printers.

   + HP256X, The reason for this is that they support as primary only
     the symbolsets ROMAN-8 and LATIN-1. Because the European Commission
     has suggested developing a new currency symbolset, a Decision
     could not be made as to which character to exchange in those symbol
     sets, because they contain multilingual characters. Caused by this,
     the new designed symbolsets ISO 8859-15 and PC_858 Could not be
     implemented in this printer model.

   + HP DeskJet 500 660 850, support printing from windows ( no internal
     printer fonts or regional font sets to support the Euro character.)

   + LaserJet families 4,5,6,3100,4000,5000, and 8000, beginning in late
     1998, HP will offer customers several ways to print the Euro
     Character on HP LaserJet families. Including hardware solution.

   * what concerned here are only device types which support Latin
     languages. For those device types created for other languages
     are out of consideration.

2.3 Testing

   We have confirmed the testing facility in the following Environment
   using SAPscript and SAPWIN device type:

      -  Environment:

         Frontend OS: Windows NT 4.0 (English)
         R/3        : Version 4.6A (BIN)
                      system codepage: 1100
                      Database: INFORMIX 7.30
         SAPLPD     : Version 4.14
         SAPGUI     : SAP Logon 4.5A
         Printers   : HP laserjet 4/4M Plus 600
                      HP laserjet 5M Postscript

      -  Preliminary:

         1) Installed the font for Euro in NT;
            * download from Microsoft website, fonts include:
            Times New Roman, Courier New and Arial
         2) Defined Euro sign in SAP Character set;
         3) Added this sap character 156 into the code page 1134 at
         position
            '0x80', which is used by device type 'SAPWIN' .

      -  steps:

         1) In transaction SPAD, created a new output device;
         2) In transaction SE71, created a form for testing purpose;
         3) In transaction SO10, created a new standard text, enter Euro
            as # . In new SAPscript editor, also can enter the Euro
            executing the function "Include->Character" and enter the
            character number 156 of Euro;
         4) Last step, printed out.

      -  Results:

         all the fonts for Euro with normal and underline format were
         not printed out correctly, but with bold and Italic format,
         they are printed out just as the same as directly printed out
         from Windows Word 7.0 .
         * using word 7.0, there is no above problem, but using wordpad,
           result was the same as the result printed out from R/3
         system.

      -  Problems:

         Euro is not displayable on the screen in printing preview

2.4 How to print Euro in R/3 system
AS we explitly depicted above that up to now due to no definition of
Euro Sign in system code pages, ABAP list printing is just inapplicable,
since character conversion from system code page to printer code page is
triggered in spool precdessing. The only way to print Euro from R/3
system is via SAPScript printing.

2.4.1 SAPScript printing

   It is possible to print Euro in your sapscript documents only by
   SAPLPD solution which means that you must use SAPWIN device types and
   printers which have windows drivers.

   Detailed steps, please refer to the testing procedure.

Appendix B: Open Issues

1. To support ABAP list printing;

2. To support the Euro Sign in system code pages for different platforms

   *Currently there are some platforms which have alredy added Euro in
   system code sets, like Microsoft, IBM (see 1.3.2). However, things
   turn out to us is not easy, because there is no standard definition
   of this Euro symbol even for a specific platform.

Symptom
Weitere Begriffe
Euro, Euro-Zeichen, SPAD, Spooler, SAPscript
Zeichennummer 156, Kurztext "euro_sign" definiert (Transaktion SPAD).
<156>

Symptom
Wie kann das Euro-Zeichen eingegeben werden?
Weitere Begriffe
EWU, EWWU, EMU, EEMU, Euro

bisher in keiner ISO-Codepage enthalten. Sobald von ISO dieses Zeichen
aufgenommen wird, wird R/3 dies unterstützen. Nähere Details zu den
unterstützten Codepages siehe Hinweis Nr. 79991.

SAP wird zukünftig Unicode unterstützen. In Unicode ist das Euro-Zeichen
enthalten. Nähere Informationen zum Unicode siehe auch den Hinweis Nr.
79991.

in SAPscript-Formularen unterstützen.
Die Unterstützung des Euro-Zeichens in SAPscript-Formularen wird
voraussichtlich für folgende Front-End-Betriebssysteme erfolgen:

   o  Windows NT 5.0 und 4.0

   o  Windows 98

   o  evtl. Mac OS

Genauere Informationen entnehmen Sie bitte Hinweis 129581.
