Following is some additional information about the GENICOM PCL) driver v3.2 (Build 3108), including tips for using the driver with various applications, as well as known bugs, caveats, and workarounds. Applications Notes ------------------ 1. CorelDraw V5, V6, V7: Print time can often be reduced by 50% or more, with no change in printed output, by setting the following value in CORELAPP.INI: UseClippingForFills=1 It is recommended that this setting be used. 2. Windows 3.x NotePad When printing at 600 dpi, NotePad clips characters at the left and right edges of the page. This is a bug in NotePad. To work around the problem, set print resolution to 300 dpi from the Options page of the printer dialog box. 3. Microsoft Excel When changing print resolution, the user needs to be sure that resolution matches between the MS Excel application program and the printer driver. Most applications will do this automatically. MS Excel will not in some cases, depending on how resolution is selected. Resolution is set in the application menus under File/Page Setup/Print Quality. It is set in the printer driver dialog box under File/Print/Properties/Options/Resolution. 4. Microsoft Excel v5.0: Printer Settings New printer settings set in the Printer Driver dialog boxes (File/Printer Setup/Setup) are not passed by Excel to the printer driver, therefore they are not used in printing. To work around the problem, enter the new settings then select a different printer/driver on the Printer Setup screen, then go back into Printer Setup and re-select the correct printer/driver. 5. All Applications: Application Print Settings (A) Many application programs have their own dialog box controls for common printer settings, such as paper size, orientation, paper tray, number of copies, etc. Usually when applications have their own settings they will override the values set in the printer dialog box. If the settings you select in the printer driver dialog box are being ignored, check whether the application has its own dialog box for the settings. If so, be sure the correct values are selected in the application, or for maximum safety, be sure the correct values are selected in both the application and the printer driver dialog box. (B) Whenever a print setting can be set from both the printer driver dialog box and the printer control panel, the value set in the printer driver dialog box will override the control panel. If you are trying to set a value from the printer control panel and it is being ignored when you print, try entering the setting in the printer driver dialog box. 6. Windows 3.x / Print Settings (A) Some Win 3.x application ignore changes to printer settings when the printer dialog box is invoked from within the application ("File"/"Print Setup" or "File"/"Print"/"Setup"). This includes the following applications (and probably others as well): Adobe FrameMaker v5 Adobe PageMaker v6.0 and v6.5 Adobe PhotoShop v2 and v3. Corel Envoy Viewer v1 If the printer ignores settings entered from the application's dialog box, select a different printer then go to Program Manager / Control Panel and enter the desired settings. Then re-select the printer from application. It will use the default settings entered from Control Panel. (B) In Windows 3.x, different print settings are maintained for each output target to which the driver prints. Therefore when output is redirected to a different port (for example LPT1 or LPT2), or sent to a disk file, print settings may change. This can result in confusing behavior when output is sent to different printers, or captured to a file, and a different set of print settings are used. The user should check that print settings are correct whenever output targets are switched, or when 'print to file' is turned on or off. 7. Layout and Scaling / Print Resolution Applications which have their own settings for print resolution can sometimes get confused when layout is >1 sheet per page, or scaling is not 100%. This is because printing resolution is effectively scaled up or down to achieve the desired effect. Some applications fail to distinguish "true print resolution" from "scaled resolution". When printing with different layouts or scaling values, be sure that print resolution on the "Options" page reflects the desired output resolution. 8. MS Excel '97 / Print Settings MS Excel '97 keeps separate print settings for each worksheet. This can sometimes be confusing when the user changes a setting from one worksheet and expects it to apply to all worksheets. The user needs to be sure that the desires settings are set correctly for each individual worksheet. 9. MS Excel '97 / Images Scaled Incorrectly MS Excel '97 sometimes scales bitmap images incorrectly. This can result in a print-out "zooming in" on one particular area of a image, instead of printing the entire image as it appears on the screen. Bugs / Caveats -------------- 1. All Applications: Font Size > 1000 Points The largest font size that can be printed in a PCL print stream is 999.75 points (approx. 13.9 inches). Using default driver settings, any font larger than this will be printed at this size. If larger sizes than this are required, go to the 'Options' page of the printer dialog box and change "TrueType Options" to "Rasters". 2. All Applications: Clipped Characters Clipped characters will not be printed when using printer-resident fonts or downloaded TrueType fonts. A character that is straddling the margin of the printable area on the page will not be printed. For downloaded TrueTypes, clipped characters can be printed by changing "TrueType Options" to "Rasters" on the 'Options' page of the printer dialog. 3. MS Excel / Right Margin When layout is >1 page per sheet, MS Excel sometimes make a slight change in the position of the right margin of the page. When a worksheet extends all the way to the edge of the page, this can sometimes cause the right edge of the page to be re-printed on a second page. When this occurs, it can be corrected by either (1) changing the margin settings in Page Setup, or (2) scaling down the image using the printer "Scaling" feature on "Options" page. 4. LinePrinter Font with Layout >1 or Scaling When an application uses LinePrinter font and the user selects a layout with >1 page per sheet or scales the page greater or less than 100%, then LinePrinter font is replaced with the closest matching font. This is because LinePrinter font cannot be scaled. This can sometimes result in minor differences in the character sizes, which can cause word breaks or page breaks to appear at slightly different places in the document. 5. Driver Installation on Windows 3.x When installing the driver onto Window 3.x, if the message: An unknown error has occurred. displays and the driver fails to load, then the user should check for the presence of the file "MUSCROLL.DLL" in the Windows root directory (for example, "C:\WINDOWS\MUSCROLL.DLL"). If this file exists then it should be deleted. The driver installation will install a new version of this file in the Windows "system" directory.Download Driver Pack
After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.
Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).
If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.
Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.
Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.
Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.
From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.
