Subject: FIX: Using LTModem Linux Driver with Xircom PCMCIA Network Card Date: 29 Jan 2002 02:34:53 -0600 From: Jeffrey Phillips <jeffrey.phillips@staffeon.com> To: discuss@linmodems.org The LTModem hardware detection process may cause an inserted Xircom PCMCIA network card to malfunction and the lt_modem and lt_serial modules to improperly load. Although the lt_modem and lt_serial modules appear to be successfully loaded and the modem appears to initialize; the modem will always report "NO DIALTONE" when trying to dial and connect. Starting with official ltmodem release of 6.00b14, there is a new optional "No Detection" value added to the lt_modem module's "Forced" parameter. If the "No Detection" value is set to 1, then the module will by-pass all hardware detection for the LTModem. Either a blank (because it is optional) or a 0 value will cause the driver to probe for the resources even though the IRQ and I/O address have already been set with the Forced parameter. To use the new "No Detection" value run: # modprobe lt_modem Forced=3,0x130,0x2f8,1 Or edit the /etc/modules.conf and add the following: options lt_modem Forced=3,0x130,0x2f8,1 For full discussion of the first three values in the Forced parameter, see the Insert-param.html file in the LTModem Documentation which is distributed with the driver, or the inside DOCs.tgz file found on the main Ltmodem Linux Driver website: http://www.heby.de/ltmodem An easy way to test if you need to set the "No Detection" is: 1. Run 'lsmod' and see if the lt_modem and lt_serial modules are loaded. 2. If they are loaded, unload them by running `rmmod lt_serial lt_modem'. 3. Insert and make sure your Xircom PCMCIA network card is working. 4. Try to dial out using your modem. 5. If you get "NO DIALTONE" returned, and your Xircom card might not have a network connection anymore then continue. 6. Eject the Xircom card. 7. Unload the ltmodem drivers by running `rmmod lt_serial lt_modem'. 8. Now try to dial using your modem. 9. If you successfully get a dial-tone, and connect then you probably need the "No Detection" parameter. If you still get "NO DIALTONE" then you probably have another problem and should look at the Docs, or ask for help in the discussion area. The above test is based on a Xircom CBEII-10/100 Cardbus, that does _not_ have the LTModem integrated into the PCMCIA card. If you have a Xircom network card with a built-in LTModem and are getting the "NO DIALTONE" you may need to just try out the "No Detection" and see if it fixes your problem. Thanks Mark Spieth for adding the "No Detection" parameter.Download Driver Pack
