3.0 RELEASE NOTES
This Readme.txt applies to the installation CD 6210-00133 A.
3.1 Hi-Speed Serial Dual Card Software
The installation consists of three software components:
1) Serial device driver
2) Property Page
3) Hi-Speed COM Tools (Baud Mapper)
The three components are intended to provide the user with
enhanced configuration options. The Property page allows
you to control the UART’s FIFO and to set the default
communication parameters. The Hi-Speed COM Tools provides
Baud Mapping (See more details in 3.2 - 3.4) and COM port
changing capabilities.
Hi-Speed Dual Serial Cards can be identified by the rev letter
on the back of the card. The following are hi-speed serial
cards and are capable of transferring data at 921 Kbps.
PC Card with Removable Cable
8510-00054 Rev K or later
8010-00057 Rev K or later
PC Card with ruggedized cable
8510-00092 Rev F or later
8510-00182 Rev F or later
8510-00077 Rev F or later
3.2 Baud Mapper Operation (Hi-Speed COM Tools)
This program starts from the Control Panel and allows Baud
Rate re-mapping from a lower (unused) baud rate to a higher
one that may not be supported by the user's application
(or the Windows OS itself, in the case of Windows 9x/ME).
IMPORTANT!
On computer systems running Windows 95/98 or any other
older systems with a slower processor speed, you may
experience the following symptoms:
If you try to use the Dual Hi-Speed serial card on
multiple channels at Hi-Speed, you may overwhelm the
system and experience reduced throughput.
There may be a limitation on the maximum baud rate
that can be achieved with the Hi-Speed COM Tools,
e.g. you may not be able to achieve reliable connections
at 230.4 kbps, 460.8 kbps or 921.6 kbps.
You may also find that even though you are able to set
a high baud rate such as 230.4, 460.8 or 921.6, the actual
throughput might be less than the stated baud rate, e.g.
you have the baud rate set to 460.8 kbps but the actual
throughput could be only 350 kbps.
On Windows Desktop the baud mapping is global,
meaning it will be used for all Hi-Speed cards running
in the system.
3.3 Baud Mapper on Windows 2000/XP
When Baud Mapper is running on a Windows 2000/XP system, it
displays the first Hi-Speed Dual Serial Card it finds in the
system (and displays "Available"). The Card Status also
shows a list of previously installed Hi-Speed cards along
with their assigned COM ports. The assigned COM port can
be changed for all cards in the list
(including cards not currently running in the system).
3.4 Baud Mapper on Windows 95OB/98/98SE/Me
The Card Status is not available for Windows 9x/Me since there
is no way to change the COM ports and dynamically assign it
at run time, (unlike Windows 2000/XP). The list of inserted
cards is not available either.
3.5 Installing More Than one High-Speed Serial Card
If you have previously installed the High-Speed COM Tools
(Baud Mapper) and you are planning to install another
High-Speed Serial (SIO, DIO, QIO) Card, you must remove
the High-Speed COM Tools ICON from the Task Bar.
If the ICON does not show up in the Task Bar you may
continue the installation. If the ICON is present in the
Task Bar, it can be removed by clicking on the ICON to open
the Hi-Speed COM Tools and unchecking "Always show icon on
the task bar" at the bottom of the screen. The ICON should
disappear and you can proceed with the installation of the
new card. If you don't uncheck the box to remove the ICON,
the new Serial card will not install correctly.
3.6 Hot Swapping
IMPORTANT!
Hot Swapping is removing and inserting the card when the
computer is turned on. You can safely hot swap your serial card
only if you have stopped the operation of the card. This can be
done by double clicking on the task tray ICON "Safely Remove
Hardware" and select "Stop". If the communication port
assigned to the DIO card is open, DO NOT remove the card.
If you remove the card from your system, you may receive system
error and require to reboot. Socket is not responsible for any
data loss.
3.7 Using More than one Socket Serial Product
If you happen to have more than one of the following Socket
products that include the Hi-Speed COM Tools, you must install
the software related to each product. To ensure that you have
available the latest version of the Hi-Speed COM Tools, install
the most updated software version last.
- Hi-Speed Serial I/O Card
- Hi-Speed Dual Serial I/O Card
- Hi-Speed Quad Serial I/O Card
- Hi-Speed Digital Phone Card
Whatever software is installed last will override the
previously installed Hi-Speed COM Tools software. Any
enhancements or updates included in the latest version of the
software will be available to the user when installed.
However, if you install an older software version on top of
the most updated version of software, the old software will
override and whatever was offered in the latest version for
Hi-Speed COM Tools will not be available. Each of the above
products will work as long as you install the corresponding
software.
To determine which software is the latest, refer to the
Readme. The Readme will include the Rev letter and date.
3.8 Using the Hi-Speed Dual Serial Card with an Older I/O Card
In some cases, the Hi-Speed Dual Serial card may not work
with an older serial I/O card simultaneously.
