The Property page allows you to control the FIFO in UART and to set the default communication parameters. The Hi-Speed COM Tools provides Baud Mapping (See more details in 3.2 - 3.4) and COM port changing capabilities. All three software components will install, but the lower speed will only go up to 230 kbps even though the baud mapper will allow you to set it to a higher speed. Important! If you are using a lower speed serial card you must select a baud rate below 230 Kbps. The low speed serial card may not operate properly if you select a baud rate higher than 230 Kbps. Hi-Speed serial cards can be identified by the rev letter on the back of the card. The following are hi-speed serial cards and are capable of transferring data at 921 Kbps. For a complete list of Serial cards see the User's Guide. CompactFlash with Removable cable 8510-00094 Rev C or later 8010-00075 Rev C or later CompactFlash with Ruggedized cable 8510-00115 Rev C or later 8010-00087 Rev C or later PC Card with Removable Cable 8510-00012 Rev M or later 8010-00012 Rev M or later PC Card with ruggedized cable 8510-00073 Rev G or later 8010-00065 Rev G or later 3.2 Baud Mapper Operation (Hi-Speed COM Tools) This program starts from the Control Panel and allows Baud Rate re-mapping from a lower (unused) baud rate to a higher one that may not be supported by the user's application (or the Windows OS itself, in the case of Windows 9x/ME). On computer systems running Windows 95/98 or any other older systems with slower processor speed, you may experience the following symptoms: - There may be a limitation on the maximum baud rate that can be achieved with the Hi-Speed COM Tools, e.g. you may not be able to achieve reliable connection at 230.4 kbps, 460.8 kbps or 921.6 kbps. - You may also find that even though you are able to set a high baud rate such as 230.4, 460.8 or 921.6, the actual throughput might be less than the stated baud rate, e.g. you have the baud rate set to 460.8 kbps but the actual throughput could be only 350 kbps. On Windows Desktop the baud mapping is global, meaning it will be used for all Hi-Speed cards running in the system. 3.3 Baud Mapper on Windows 2000/XP When Baud Mapper is running on a Window 2000/XP system, it displays the first Hi-Speed serial card it finds in the system (and displays "Available"). If no Hi-Speed card is running, it will display a message saying no cards detected. The Card Status also shows a list of previously installed Hi-Speed cards along with their assigned COM ports. The assigned COM port can be changed for all cards in the list (including cards not currently running in the system). 3.4 Baud Mapper on Windows 95OB/98/98SE/Me The Card Status is not available for Windows 9x/Me since there is no way to change the COM ports and dynamically assign it at run time, (unlike Windows 2000/XP). The list of inserted cards is not available either. 3.5 Installing More Than one High-Speed Serial Card If you have previously installed the High-Speed COM Tools (Baud Mapper) and you are planning to install another High-Speed Serial (SIO, DIO, QIO) Card, you must remove the High-Speed COM Tools ICON from the Task Bar. If the ICON does not show up in the Task Bar you may continue the installation. If the ICON is present in the Task Bar, it can be removed by clicking on the ICON to open the Hi-Speed COM Tools and unchecking "Always show icon on the task bar" at the bottom of the screen. The ICON should disappear and you can proceed with the installation of the new card. If you don't uncheck the box to remove the ICON, the new Serial card will not install correctly. 3.6 Hot Swapping IMPORTANT! Hot Swapping is removing and inserting the card when the computer is turned on. You can safely hot swap your serial card only if you have stopped the operation of the card. This can be done by double clicking on the task tray ICON "Safely Remove Hardware" and select "Stop". If the communication port assigned to the SIO card is open, DO NOT remove the card. If you remove the card from your system, you may receive system error and require to reboot. Socket is not responsible for any data loss. 4.0 UNINSTALL PROCEDURES 4.1 Windows 95OB/98/98SE/Me Uninstall Procedures Under normal operation, it should never be necessary to uninstall the driver-related files for the Socket Serial I/O cards.
