3.0 RELEASE NOTES

This README.TXT file applies to the Low Power Ethernet Windows CE
Installation.

3.1 If you already have a previous version of the Socket Low Power
Ethernet Driver installed, you should uninstall it completely from
your Windows CE device as well as your Host Computer before installing
this driver. Please see uninstall procedure below. If you do not
uninstall the older version prior to installing this new version,
you will have two different versions of the driver listed under the
Windows directory.

3.2 Under Mobile Devices in the ActiveSync screen, if you have the
box checked which says "Automatically synchronize upon connection",
when you begin to install the LP-E software, the synchronization
process will take place before the installation begins.

3.3 It is not necessary to have your Windows CE device connected to
run the Setup program. If the device is not present when you run
Setup, the Socket LP-E software will be downloaded to your CE
device automatically the next time you connect it to your host PC.

3.5 If you have ActiveSync set up to be auto-launched by Socket's
Low Power Ethernet driver and it does not auto-launch you should
do two things:
 a) Set a longer to delay for the auto-launch by going to
    Start|Settings|Control Panel or Start|Settings|Connections
and open the Socket LP-E icon. Click on the Auto-Launch tab
and set to 8 seconds or longer.
 b) Manually launch ActiveSync by going to:
     Start|Programs|Communications|ActiveSync or
     Start|Programs|Connections|ActiveSync

4.0 WINDOWS CE UNINSTALL PROCEDURES

Microsoft ActiveSync offers several options for uninstalling
applications on your Windows CE device (e.g. Pocket PC, HPC 2000).

Option 1: To Uninstall Directly on your Pocket PC using the Remove
Program
 a) Please close the Low Power Ethernet software and remove the card.
Failure to do this will prevent completion of the uninstall
    process.
 b) Tap on the START menu
 c) Tap on SETTINGS
 d) Tap on the SYSTEM Tab or CONTROL PANEL
 e) Double or single tap on the REMOVE PROGRAMS icon
 f) Tap on (Select) the line that says "Socket Low Power Ethernet Driver"
 g) Double or single Tap on REMOVE
 h) Tap on YES to confirm removal of the program

Option 2: To Uninstall from your Host PC
If your Windows CE device is currently connected to your desktop
machine. Follow these steps on your host PC:
 a) Please close the Low Power Ethernet software and remove the card.
Failure to do this will prevent completion of the uninstall
    process.
 b) Establish a connection between your Windows CE device and Host
    PC
 c) Open Microsoft ActiveSync
 d) Select TOOLS, ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS
 e) Highlight "Socket Low Power Ethernet Driver"
 f) Click REMOVE
 g) Select OK to confirm removal of the software on your mobile
    device
 h) Click NO in the next dialog to prevent the software from being
    removed from your Host PC.

Regardless of which of these two methods you use to uninstall the
Low Power Ethernet software, you will be able to re-install the
software on your Windows CE device by simply going back into
Microsoft ActiveSync, TOOLS, ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS window, then
re-checking the "Socket Low Power Ethernet Driver" item, then
clicking OK. This is possible because a copy of the Low Power Ethernet
Software remains on your Host PC until you take the steps necessary
to remove it.

Option 3: To completely uninstall the Low Power Ethernet software from
both your mobile device and your Host PC
 a) Please close the Low Power Ethernet software and remove the card.
Failure to do this will prevent completion of the uninstall
    process.
 b) Establish a connection between your Windows CE device and Host
    PC
 c) Open Microsoft ActiveSync
 d) Select TOOLS, ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS
 e) Highlight "Socket Low Power Ethernet Driver"
 f) Click REMOVE
 g) Select OK to confirm removal of the software on your mobile
    device
 h) Click YES in the next dialog to confirm removing the software
    from your Host PC.
 i) Click OK twice to close each respective dialog box or window

This process will remove the Low Power Ethernet software from both your
Windows CE device and Host PC and will require you to re-install the
program from Installation CD the software was supplied on.

5.0 TROUBLESHOOTING

1) Problem: When you try to connect to your Host PC using ActiveSync,
and the ActiveSync window flashes, then immediately disappears and no
connection is made.

There are currently four methods of resolving this problem if it
occurs:
 a) If you are using static IP addressing, make your Host PC's IP
address the Primary WIN Server address. This is easy to do. On
your H/PC, tap Start/Settings/Control Panel, then double tap
on the Network icon. Make sure Socket LP-E Driver is
highlighted. Tap on Properties. Under the Name Servers tab,
enter the IP address of your Host PC in the Primary WINS:
field. This will cause your H/PC to refer to your Host PC for
    name resolution.
 b) If you are using DHCP addressing and you do not have a WINS
server, but your DHCP server is capable of handling WINS, you
need to make sure the TCP/IP Configuration properties of the
Host PC are correctly enabled. On your Host PC, under
Start/Settings/Control Panel, double click on the Network icon.
Under the Configuration tab, scroll down to the TCP/IP ->
entry for the Ethernet controller in your Host PC. Highlight
the TCP/IP -> entry and click on Properties. Select the WINS
Configuration tab, and make sure that the radio button states,
    "Use DHCP for WINS Resolution."
 c) If you are using DHCP Addressing and you do have a WINS Server,
follow the procedure described in step B above, then make sure
that DHCP addressing is enabled on your H/PC. To do this, tap
Start/Settings/ Control Panel, then double tap on the Network
icon. In the Network Configuration window, make sure Socket
LP-E Driver is highlighted, then tap on Properties. Under the
IP Address tab, make sure the radio button is checked for
Obtain an IP address via DHCP.
 d) If you still encounter problems, you should enter an IP
address on your H/PC for the Primary WINS server. Under
Start/Settings/Control Panel, double tap on the Network icon.
Make sure Socket LP-E Driver is highlighted, then tap on
Properties. Under the Name Servers tab, enter the IP address
of the WINS server in the Primary WINS: field.

NOTE: In order for these changes to take effect you will need to
remove the LP-E Card from your H/PC and then reset your H/PC
(turning your H/PC off, then on again will not work). An 620/660
LX reset shortcut - simply hit the control, on/off and backspace
keys at the same time.

2) Problem: When you insert the LP-E Card into the PC Card slot of
your H/PC, nothing happens.
 a) If you do not have auto ActiveSync or other program activated,
you could be connected but nothing will happen. To verify, you
can initiate an ActiveSync session or attempt to access the
    Internet through your company gateway.
 b) Another likely cause is that the software needed by the LP-E
has not been installed or has been installed improperly. To
complete the installation, follow the instructions in the
Low Power Ethernet Card Users Guide.

NOTE: After you run the LP-E Card setup software, you must remove
the serial cable or USB cable and then soft reset your H/PC or P/PC.
This forces the new Ethernet software to load. Insert the LP-E Card and
correctly configure the Network Properties. Pull the card out of
your H/PC and re-insert it. This will cause the IP address options
to take effect.

6.0 Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What versions of Windows CE support the Socket LP-E Card?
A: The LP-E drivers are compatible with Windows CE 2.11 for
Handheld PC Pro, Windows CE 3.0 for Pocket PC 2000, Pocket
PC 2002, Handheld PC 2000 and Windows Mobile 2003. The
LP-E card will also work without using the Socket drivers in
any system that supports NE2000-compatible network cards.

Q: How do I find out the IP address of my H/PC when it connects
   using DHCP?
A: Open the Socket LP-E icon in the Control Panel and tap on the
IP Info tab. You will see all of the appropriate IP addresses
listed, including the MAC address or node ID of the card.

Q: Can I use my LP-E CF Card in an H/PC by using a CompactFlash
   to PC Card adapter?
A: Yes. The install disk determines which type of device you are
connected to (H/PC or P/PC) and installs the correct Ethernet
components for the device you are using.

Q: Can I use my LP-E CF Card in a standard PC Card slot of an
   Windows 95/98/Me/2000/XP notebook?
A: Yes with a CompactFlash-to-PC Card adapter.

Q: What is the advantage of using DHCP with the LP-E Card instead
   of fixed IP addresses?
A: Microsoft's DHCP protocol automatically allocates IP addresses
and can also keep track of gateways and name servers. This is
an efficient way to share IP addresses among many mobile users
who are only occasionally connected to the network. DHCP also
makes it easy to change a gateway or name server address without
the hassle of updating every user individually. If your network
supports DHCP, you should use it.

Q: Can I run the LP-E Card without having my H/PC or P/PC
   connected to an AC adapter?
A: Yes. However, once you get a warning that your device's battery
is low, you should attach an AC adapter or replace the device's
   batteries.
