Previous Releases: 121 B This release added the autorun feature to the installation disc as well as included an updated User Guide. 121 A This was the initial release of the 10/100 Ethernet CF Card product and software. Drivers were included for Windows CE 2.11 for Handheld PC Pros, Windows CE 3.0 for Pocket PC 2000, Pocket PC 2002 and Handheld PC 2000. Unique features include: -The ability to specify any program to launch at card insertion. You could, for example, initiate ActiveSync or start a custom data collection application. -The ability to specify a delay before the driver attempts to connect to the network (or any other program). 2.0 WINDOWS CE FILE LOCATIONS The following files are installed on all Windows CE devices to the Windows directory (only if not already present): \ WINDOWS\ LPECfg100.cpl SocketLpe100.DLL Socket 10-100 Ethernet Driver.UNLOAD The following files are also installed in the \ WINDOWS directory 10100_autolaunch.htp 10100_info.htp 10100_overview.htp lpecfg100.htc 3.0 RELEASE NOTES 3.1 Setup Center Install Process: For Windows Internet Explorer Users - When prompted with the option during the install process in the "File Download" window to either: Run this program from its current location or Save this program to disk You MUST select "Run this program from its current location" for the installation process to run without errors. When the "Security Warning" window appears, click Yes to continue. If you use Netscape you have the following options: a) Close Netscape and use Windows Internet Explorer and browse to the root of the CD and manually launch SETUP.HTM and then follow the instructions above; or b) Exit the Setup Center and browse the CD to the WinCE directory and manually launch the SETUP.EXE file found in the directory (not the SETUP.EXE at the root). 3.2 It is not necessary to have your Windows CE device connected to run the Setup program. If the device is not present when you run Setup, the Socket 10/100 Ethernet software will be downloaded to your CE device automatically the next time you connect it to your host PC. 3.3 The CompactFlash slot in some clam-shell type H/PCs, such as the HP 620/660/680 LX, do not support I/O functions and thus do not support the Socket 10/100 Ethernet CF card. However, the card will work in the PC Card slot of any H/PC with a CF to PC Card adapter. 4.0 WINDOWS CE UNINSTALL PROCEDURES Microsoft ActiveSync offers several options for uninstalling applications on your Windows CE device (e.g. Pocket PC, HPC 2000). Option 1: To Uninstall Directly on your Pocket PC using the Remove Program a) Please close the 10/100 Ethernet software and remove the card. Failure to do this will prevent completion of the uninstall process. b) Tap on the START menu c) Tap on SETTINGS d) Tap on the SYSTEM Tab or CONTROL PANEL e) Double or single tap on the REMOVE PROGRAMS icon f) Tap on (Select) the line that says "Socket 10-100 Ethernet Driver" g) Double or single Tap on REMOVE h) Tap on YES to confirm removal of the program Option 2: To Uninstall from your Host PC If your Windows CE device is currently connected to your desktop machine. Follow these steps on your host PC: a) Please close the 10/100 Ethernet software and remove the card. Failure to do this will prevent completion of the uninstall process. b) Establish a connection between your Windows CE device and Host PC c) Open Microsoft ActiveSync d) Select TOOLS, ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS e) Highlight "Socket 10-100 Ethernet Driver" f) Click REMOVE g) Select OK to confirm removal of the software on your mobile device h) Click NO in the next dialog to prevent the software from being removed from your Host PC. Regardless of which of these two methods you use to uninstall the 10/100 Ethernet software, you will be able to re-install the software on your Windows CE device by simply going back into Microsoft ActiveSync, TOOLS, ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS window, then re-checking the "Socket 10-100 Ethernet Driver" item, then clicking OK. This is possible because a copy of the 10/100 Ethernet Software remains on your Host PC until you take the steps necessary to remove it. Option 3: To completely uninstall the 10/100 Ethernet software from both your mobile device and your Host PC a) Please close the 10/100 Ethernet software and remove the card. Failure to do this will prevent completion of the uninstall process. b) Establish a connection between your Windows CE device and Host PC c) Open Microsoft ActiveSync d) Select TOOLS, ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS e) Highlight "Socket 10-100 Ethernet Driver" f) Click REMOVE g) Select OK to confirm removal of the software on your mobile device h) Click YES in the next dialog to confirm removing the software from your Host PC. i) Click OK twice to close each respective dialog box or window This process will remove the 10-100 Ethernet software from both your Windows CE device and Host PC and will require you to re-install the program from Installation CD the software was supplied on. 4.0 TROUBLESHOOTING 1) Problem: When you insert the 10/100 card into the CF Card slot of your Windows CE device, nothing happens. a) If you do not have auto ActiveSync or other program activated, you could be connected but nothing will happen. To verify, you can initiate an ActiveSync session or attempt to access the Internet through your company gateway. b) Another likely cause is that the software needed by the 10/100 card has not been installed or has been installed improperly. To complete the installation, follow the instructions in the 10/100 Ethernet CF card User's Guide. c) Make sure the CF slot of your Handheld PC is capable of I/O (Input/Output) operations and is not a memory-only slot. To summarize the installation procedure: -Create a partnership using the serial cable connection between your Windows CE device and Host PC. -From Start/Run browse to the CD-Rom drive and run SETUP.htm. This launches the 10/100 Ethernet Setup Center and allows you to install the software needed by the 10/100 card from the installation disk. NOTE: After you run the setup, you must remove the serial or USB cable from your Windows CE device and then press the soft reset button. This forces the new Ethernet software to load. Insert the 10/100 card and correctly configure the Network Properties. Pull the card out of your Windows CE device and re-insert it. This will cause the IP address options to take effect. For other troubleshooting tips, refer to the Troubleshooting section of your User Guide. 5.0 Frequently Asked Questions Q: I choose connect from the ActiveSync auto-launch program but the message "PC contacted. Locating connection agent, please wait..." remains on my screen. What is wrong? A: The most likely cause for this message is that you have not input the IP address of the ActiveSync host PC in the WINS field of the name servers tab of the Socket 10/100 driver. Q: How do I find out the IP address of my H/PC when it connects using DHCP? A: Open the Socket 10/100 icon in the Control Panel and tap on the IP Info tab. You will see all of the appropriate IP addresses listed, including the MAC address or node ID of the card. Q: Can I use my 10/100 Ethernet CF card in an H/PC Pro by using a CompactFlash to PC Card adapter? A: Yes. You purchase an adapter directly from Socket at http://www.socketcom.com/shop/howto.htm. Q: What is the advantage of using DHCP with the 10/100 card instead of fixed IP addresses? A: Microsoft's DHCP protocol automatically allocates IP addresses and can also keep track of gateways and name servers. This is an efficient way to share IP addresses among many mobile users who are only occasionally connected to the network. DHCP also makes it easy to change a gateway or name server address without the hassle of updating every user individually. If your network supports DHCP, you should use it. Q: Can I run the 10/100 card without having my Windows CE device connected to an AC adapter? A: Yes. However, once you get a warning that your device's battery is low, you should attach an AC adapter or replace the device's batteries. 6.0 TECHNICAL SUPPORT INFORMATION You must register your product to receive assistance from Socket Technical Support.
