Axiom 61 Pro Tools info.txt Driver File Contents (m-audio_axiomAIR61_win_x86_x64.zip)

This setup will allow you to use your Axiom 61 as a Control Surface with Pro Tools. This Zip file contains an XML File "Axiom 61 Pro Tools" that needs to be loaded into your Axiom using Enigma (www.m-audio.com/enigma).

Use Preset 1 in this XML file with Pro Tools. Preset 2 is the GM Preset (factory default preset 1, not specific to Pro Tools). The remaining presets were copied from the Axiom factory defaults.

To setup an Axiom as a control surface with Pro Tools:

1. Go to http://www.digidesign.com/index.cfm?navid=54&langid=100&itemid=4796 and download the Legacy MIDI Controller file (CS-10) that corresponds with your version of Pro Tools.

2. Install this file in:

(Mac) Macintosh HD > Applications > Digidesign > Pro Tools> Controllers

    (Windows) C:\Program Files\Common Files\Digidesign\DAE\Controllers

3. In Pro Tools, open Peripherals from the Set Up drop down menu

4. Choose the third tab “MIDI controllers” and select CS-10 under Type.

5. Select Axiom Port 1 for both “Receive from” and “Send to”.

6. Select “8” for “# Ch’s” and Click OK.

HOW IT WORKS

Transport Buttons:

The Play, Stop, Record, FF, and RW buttons function as expected. The Loop/Cycle button has no direction function of its own and instead acts as a modifier for the functionality of the Play and Record buttons. When Loop/Cycle is pressed, Play toggles loop playback on/off and Record cycles through the 4 record modes (Normal, Destructive, Loop, and Quick Punch). Pressing the Loop/Cycle button again will return the Play and Record buttons to their normal transport functions.

Sliders/Faders:

The 1st 8 sliders will control volume for the currently selected bank of tracks. The 1st 2 Pads (C23 and C24) will bank left and right (up and down) to access different groups of tracks. Press pad C24 to bank right/up and control channels 9-16 (press again for 17-24 and so on). Press pad C23 to bank left/down from controlling 9-16 to go back and control 1-8.

The 9th fader (D17) is disabled.

Encoder Knobs:

Knob B5 (top left knob) controls Track Pan for the Currently Selected Channel Strip (see Fader Mode 5 below in the Fader Buttons section). The next 3 knobs (B6-B8) control FX send's 1-3 (aka Sends A, B, and C) on the currently selected channel strip. Knobs B1 and B2 will control sends 4 and 5 (aka Sends D and E).

Knobs B3 and B4 are disabled.

Fader Buttons (the buttons below the faders):

The 9th fader button (the button w/ no marking) cycles through the 6 "modes" for the 1st 8 buttons.

These modes are:

1. Mute - Toggles Mute On/Off for tracks in the current bank (i.e. 1-8 or 9-16). This is the default starting mode.

2. Memory Location - Jumps to the 1st 8 markers set in your song

3. Track Select - Selects/Deselects tracks in the current bank (for grouping/editing)

4. Record - Toggles Record On/Off for tracks in the current bank

5. Channel Strip Select - Selects the track/channel strip to be controlled by the knobs (Pan and FX Send)

6. Solo - Toggles Solo On/Off for tracks in the current bank

The Pads:

As mentioned above, Pad C23 banks left (or down) to select different groups of tracks to control. Pad C24 banks right (or up). The rest of the pads are disabled.

NOTES:

The only way to interface the Axiom (or any MIDI Controller) with Pro Tools is by using an old JL-Cooper CS-10 Control Surface file, and there are a few things to be aware of.

* You must move the slider on the Axiom past the point of the fader on screen for it to "catch" and start controlling the volume fader in Pro Tools. It may not "catch" every time.

* Knob B5 will not control pan until a plug-in window has been opened. On new Sessions, insert a plug-in on a track, or for an existing session with plugins, click one of the plug-ins to open it's GUI.

* When turning a knob/encoder, the value on screen may "jump" to match the current position of the knob. If this is a problem, you can press the "mute" button on your Axiom and turn the knob to the approximate position of the control on screen, the press "mute" again and continue turning the knob to minimize any "jumping".

* You can globally change the accelleration curve of the Axiom's rotary encoder to tailor the control response to your liking. Press the "Mute" and "Program" buttons below the Axiom's LCD display simultaneously. "Curve" will start flashing on the Axiom's display. To change the druve, use the +/- buttons by the Axiom's numeric keypad to scroll through the different Curves (C1, C2, C3, and OFF). Test the different curves for adjusting Pan or FX sends to set the curve you are must comfortable with.
