3C90Xx MBA Technical Support Questions and Answers
--------------------------------------------------

These questions and answers apply to users of 3C90Xx (e.g. 3C905,
3C905B, 3C905C, etc.) adapters and MBA.

Q1. I have a number of old TriROMs which worked fine on 3C90X adapters, but
they don't seem to work on 3C90XBs or 3C90XCs. Should this be the case?

A1. Yes. The 3C90XB/3C90XC are new adapters which introduces new
hardware design and functionality. The 3C90X TriROM was designed to
work with the previous 3C905 and 3C900 series and thus is
     incompatible with the newer architecture.

To use these NICs and ROMs together, you must run MBAFLASH. MBAFLASH will
work on either the 3C90X, 3C90XB, 3C90XC by detecting the NIC type and
programming the ROM with the appropiate code.

Q2. After a soft reboot of Windows 95 or NT, the MBA ROM seems to disappear.
     What is going on?

A2. It turns out that this was a problem with the new Power Management
functionality on the original 3C905B LAN Controller chip (Rev. 001), and
has since been fixed. When Windows shuts down as a reslt of a soft reboot,
the adapater is put in a D3 "sleep" power state. In this state, all ROM
access is unavailable and thus the ROM will not work.

This can be fixed by disabling the Remote Wake Up (RWU) function on the
adapter. To do this, uninstall the adapter and set the WAKEONLINK and
WAKEONMAGIC settings in the .INF file to "no". Once modified, reinstall
the adapter with this modified .INF file.
