NetWare Server Driver Installation Notes
This file contains information for installing the ODI server driver into
a NetWare version 4.x or 5.x server. You can install this driver by
using the program to copy the driver to the server's hard disk, and then
manually load the driver. Alternatively, you can import this driver when
installing the NetWare server software.
NOTE: For optimum results with the Driver, have the latest Service Pack
( at least NetWare Support Pack 2 for Netware 5.X, Support Pack 6 for
Netware 4.X ) installed. The Driver will fail to load on 4.X systems
on which the Support Packs are not installed. The Support Packs are
available from Novell's Website.
3Com has provided the latest (at time of testing) NLM files on the
EtherCD. You can copy the NLM files from the \NWSERVER subdirectory
of the EtherCD to the same location as the server driver. Copy these
files only if the versions existing in the server are older than the
ones supplied in the EtherCD.
In some circumstances, where NBI.NLM is loaded at server startup time,
you should also copy the NBI.NLM file to the server startup directory.
For Netware 5.x, the NBI.NLM is built in, you do not need to copy
the NBI.NLM file.
Installing the Server Driver into a NetWare 5.x Server
------------------------------------------------------
To import the server driver into a NetWare 5.x server:
1. Install the server software in the usual way.
2. When the new hardware screen appears, press [ESC].
3. Insert the EtherCD in the CD-ROM drive.
4. Go to step 2 of "Installing the Server Driver into a Netware 4.x Server."
Installing the Server Driver into a NetWare 4.x Server
------------------------------------------------------
To import the server driver into a NetWare 4.x server:
1. Install the server software in the usual way.
2. When the NIC selection menu appears, insert the EtherCD in the CD-ROM
drive.
3. Press [Insert].
This key tells the server installation program that you want to add a
driver externally.
4. Press [F3].
This key tells the server installation program that you want to change
the path.
5. At the prompt, enter:
X:\NWSERVER (where X: identifies your CD drive)
The installation program gathers the files and prompts you for a
NIC selection.
6. Press [Enter] to continue the server installation.
Manually Updating an Existing Server Driver (4.x and 5.x)
---------------------------------------------------------
1. To update an existing server driver manually, copy the new driver from the
\NWSERVER subdirectory on the EtherCD to the server's hard drive.
2. Boot the server and launch the Install program.
3. Edit the AUTOEXEC.NCF file to add the following line (assuming the
server start directory is C:\NWSERVER, where the LAN drivers and NLM
files were copied):
LOAD C:\NWSERVER\3C99X.LAN SLOT=<slotnumber>
The <slotnumber> variable is the hexadecimal slot number of the PCI
NIC. This address can be obtained by issuing a load command, where the
driver identifies the slot numbers. Pressing escape prevents
loading the driver. Because of Novell's scheme for identifying PCI
slots, it is not possible for 3COM to pre-identify the slot number.
Multiple NICs
-----------------
To support more than one NIC in a server, change the AUTOEXEC.NCF file
to the format shown below:
load C:\NWSERVER\3C99X.LAN SLOT=<slot1> NAME=<name1> FRAME=<frametype>
load C:\NWSERVER\3C99X.LAN SLOT=<slot2> NAME=<name2> FRAME=<frametype>
where <slot1> and <slot2> are the NICs' PCI port addresses and <name1>
and <name2> are user-specified names that you assign to distinguish the
multiple NICs.
The FRAME parameter is optional. The default frame type is
Ethernet_802.2. If you want the ODI server driver to support more
than one frame type, then both the unique NAME= and FRAME= parameters
must be on each load driver line. The valid frame types are
Ethernet_802.2, Ethernet_802.3, Ethernet_II, and Ethernet_SNAP.
The Media Speed is set to AutoNegotiate by default. The user can force
it to any of the following values using the keyword MEDIA_SELECT:
MEDIA_SELECT = 0 [ AutoNegotiate]
MEDIA_SELECT = 1 [ 10 Mbps HALF Dulpex]
MEDIA_SELECT = 2 [ 10 Mbps FULL Dulpex]
MEDIA_SELECT = 3 [100 Mbps HALF Dulpex]
MEDIA_SELECT = 4 [100 Mbps FULL Dulpex]
NOTE: The 3Com Secure Network Interface Fiber(FX) Cards support only 100 Mbps
Full(default) and Half Duplex modes.
The protocol(s) must be bound to the specific driver configuration using
the user-assigned unique names. The following example shows how this can be
done:
load C:\NWSERVER\3C99X.LAN SLOT=1 FRAME=Ethernet_802.3 NAME=ADPONE
load C:\NWSERVER\3C99X.LAN SLOT=2 FRAME=Ethernet_II NAME=ADPTWO
bind IPX to ADPONE
bind IPX to ADPTWO
The examples used may require other parameters to work properly.
Consult the appropriate Novell NetWare manuals for details.
NOTE: The LAN driver can also be installed by using Novell's INETCFG
utility. Help on using this utility can be found at Novell's Support
Website.
It is advisable that on loading Multiple adapters the MINIMUM PACKET RECEIVE
BUFFERS value specified be at least 200 times the number of 3C99X EtherLink 10/100
PCI NICs in the computer. Initialization may otherwise fail with error message
"Insufficient RCBs". Add the following to STARTUP.NCF:
SET MINIMUM PACKET RECEIVE BUFFERS = 400 (or larger)
SET MAXIMUM PACKET RECEIVE BUFFERS = 1000 (or larger)
The MAXIMUM value depends upon the amount of memory in the system.

Download Driver Pack
After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.
Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).
If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.
Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.
Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.
Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.
From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.
Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.
Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
