The installation consists of two separate pieces of software: a) Driver installation: inserting the card into the PC Card slot (using a CF-to-PC Card adapter) will initiate the New Hardware Wizard in the Windows desktop operating system. Select the Search option and point/browse to the location of the driver software (CD-ROM or web download). Follow the instructions in the Wizard until the driver is successfully installed. b) Client Manager (CM) utility software: this utility provides WLAN configuration and monitoring tools. The CM is required for Windows 98SE, 2000 and Me for configuration of WLAN settings. In Windows XP, the CM only provides monitoring tools as XP's Wireless Connection utility (a.k.a. Wireless Zero Configuration) is used for configuring WLAN settings. The CM is thus optional for Windows XP as it is not required for WLAN configuration. To start the installation wizard, run the "setup.exe" file in the folder named "Windows". A new and separate User's Guide for Windows desktop operating system use is included. Please refer to this new Guide for detailed instructions on installation and usage. 1.1 IMPORTANT!! PLEASE CHECK CF WLAN HARDWARE VERSION!! Socket has released two distinct hardware versions of the Low Power CF WLAN Card, each with their own associated software. To determine the hardware version, check the P/N on the manufacturing/regulatory label on the back of the card. P/N Latest Software --------------- --------------------------- 8510-00186 A 124 C (CD p/n 6210-00124 C) 8510-00186 B 124 C (CD p/n 6210-00124 C) 8510-00188 A 124 C (CD p/n 6210-00124 C) 8510-00212 A 124 D (CD p/n 6210-00124 D) 8510-00216 A 124 D (CD p/n 6210-00124 D) The 8510-00186 A/B and the 8510-00188 A were the hardware version that shipped from Socket between 2001 and 2003. The 8510-00212 A and 8510-00216 A began shipping in early 2004. Another simple way to distinguish the cards is the number of LEDs: the 8510-00186 and 8510-00188 each have a single LED, while the 8510-00212/216 A have two LEDS. Please insure that you are using the correct software for your particular card. 1.2 The CF WLAN card works on networks that use 802.11b Wi-Fi Certified access points or with other mobile devices using 802.11b Wi-Fi Certified Wireless LAN cards in the Ad-Hoc mode. Accessability to networks can be configured as Open (no security), WEP protected, or EAP-TLS or PEAP authentication (Pocket PC 2003 and Windows XPonly) for networks supporting these two 802.1x types. If you are not sure if your Access point supports the 802.1x authentication protocol please check with your Access Point manufacturer. Please visit Socket's website for updates and information on this product: www.socketcom.com 2.0 RELEASE NOTES 2.1 Before installing this software, please uninstall any previously installed software for any 802.11b Wireless LAN product. Please refer to Section 4.0 of this document for uninstallation instructions. 2.2 After installing this release you should remove the CF WLAN Card and soft reset your device first to ensure that the current driver is not loaded. 2.3 Please remove the CF WLAN card whenever a soft reset is performed. The driver may "hang" if it is in the CF slot during soft reset. 2.4 For 802.1x users, a few users may not be able to retrieve a User certificate (known as "enrolling") during the setup of EAP-TLS. Check the IAS server's Event Log for error messages that indicatean incorrect NT login type was used. Another indicator is the problem disappears after the administrator promotes the User's status in Active Directory from DomainUser to DomainAdmin. If so, change the LAN Manager Authentication level to "Send LM & NTLM -use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated". Contact Microsoft for more detail. 2.5 Socket plans to add support for Windows 98SE, 2000 and XP on notebook computers. Please check www.socketcom.com periodically for updates. 2.6 In Windows CE 3.0 (PPC 2000/2002, HPC 2000), the Power Management setting (ON/OFF) is initially defined in the configuration of the wireless profile. It can be manually overridden by changing the setting in the WLAN Tools utility. 3.0 KNOWN BUGS IN THIS RELEASE 3.1 The installation program for Windows CE 3.0 (PPC 2000/2002, HPC 2000) will install on a Windows Mobile 2003. If a CF WLAN card is inserted, an "Unrecognized Card" message will appear. Please ensure that you are using the correct installation program for your device. 3.2 The installation program for Windows CE 3.0 has typographical errors that refer to Windows Mobile 2003 in the "Welcome" window and the "Software License Agreement" window. 3.3 In Windows Mobile 2003, the Suspend While Connected feature is not disabled even when it is unchecked by the user. The device will suspend according to its power settings if there is no WLAN data activity. 3.4 The Help files have some errors or are in some places not functional. Please see the User's Guide and the Quick Start Guide on the CD as the primary reference documents. 4.0 WINDOWS CE UNINSTALL PROCEDURES Microsoft ActiveSync offers several options for uninstalling applications on your Windows CE device (e.g. Pocket PC, HPC 2000).
