Winnt 4.0 CalComp Raster Driver 5.00 Final Release 5.00	28 May 1997

Installation

System requirements:
  - NT 4.0 x86
  - 486 or better
  - 16 MEG of memory or more
  - 20 MEG of free disk space, more for large raster plots.

The following assumes you have the CalComp Raster Driver on three floppy disks. If you have a self extracting archive, execute the archive and unpack the driver onto floppy disks. If replacing a driver, remove existing printers using it and reboot. The following assumes you have administrative privileges to install a printer.

1. Select Start / Settings / Printers.
2. Select Add Printer, specify a port and Have Disk.
3. Insert the first of the disks in drive a:, specify the location a:, and press Enter.
4. Insert the next disks when requested.
5. Configure the driver as desired.

The inf file is used for installation. This driver installs following files to %SystemRoot%\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86 and %SystemRoot%\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\2 to during a local install and to %SystemRoot%\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\2 during a network install where %SystemRoot% is the Winnt4.0 system folder: *.ppd, gsui.dll, gs.dll, gspd.dll, gsdll32.dll, fontmap, *.pfb. A binary ppd file, bpd, is created in the process. During installation all registry entries are made relative to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\. During local installation registry entries are made to ~\Environments\Windows NT x86\Drivers\Version-2, ~\Forms, and ~\Printers. During network installation registry entries are made to ~\Environments\Windows NT x86\Drivers\Version-2, ~\Forms, and ~\Providers\LanMan Print Services\Servers. The system must be rebooted after installation as the driver may already be loaded into memory.

Operation

During configuration, the user interface is provided by gsui.dll based on a postscript printer definition (ppd) file for the device. Both roll and cut sheet ppds are provided for devices supporting them, but the driver uses only the roll ppd and applies margins to it when using cut sheet. During page layout, the driver, gs.dll, communicates the imageable area of a page to the application, based on the ppd file and source. During printing it converts Windows GDI into PostScript and sends it to the user mode printer driver, gspd.dll. The user mode printer driver outputs PostScript or uses gsdll32.dll to rasterize PostScript to CalComp Raster Format, CCRF, and outputs that to the spooler. The rasterizer uses the fontmap file and the postscript font files, (pfb) to do the rasterization.

Changes

Some corrections have been made to ppd files. The driver now uses roll ppds and apply margins to them when using manual cut sheet. The driver files are now all collocated in the driver folder. Some network installation problems have been fixed. The driver is now more informative and robust during failure. Some far eastern font problems have been fixed.

Troubleshooting

Answering the following questions may assist you if you are having trouble printing.
1. Do you have administrative privileges to install a printer?
2. Does a local administrator installation succeed?
3. Did you reboot after installation?
4. Does a local user installation succeed?
5. Can a user print?
6. Does the driver print a test page? (Printer / Properties / Print Test Page)
7. Does the driver print to a raster file? (Printer / Properties / Port / File)
8. Does copying a raster file to the port print?
9. Does the driver print to a postscript file? (Printer / Document Defaults / Printer Features / OutputFormat)
10. Does copying a PostScript file to the port print? (Only if your device supports PostScript)
11. Does a network installation succeed?
12. Does a network installation print?

Release Notes

Use Printers Document Properties and Printer Properties to set default parameters. Select Roll or Manual Feed from Document Properties. 'Automatically Select' automatically selects roll. Printer Features vary with model and may include OutputFormat, OutputMode, OutputScaling, ColorModel, Dithering, MediaType, InkType, and ColorMatching. Plotter uses the value currently on selected on the plotter. Color profiles are not currently supported under NT.

OutputFormat and OutputMode must be set under Printers; setting it from an application is too late for it to take effect. OutputMode allows selection of Raster or PostScript. Raster rasterizes PostScript on the computer and sends the resulting raster data to the plotter. PostScript sends PostScript to the plotter for rasterization. The PostScript options apply in either case. PostScript is available for all models in order to create diagnostic files. Do not attempt to output PostScript to models which do not support it. Electrostatics and Ecografix support it only through PrintBridge. It is not supported on the DrawingMasters and TechJET 5400s and was optional on the TechJET 5300s.

The CalComp NT raster driver supports most common large forms. You may create additional forms if needed. Use the Printers / File / Server Properties menu option to create forms not listed
in the driver media list. Use OutputScaling to circumvent application limitations. OutputScaling ranges from 1 to 16 in factors of sqrt(2). Users will want to select 'No Assignment' in Printer / Properties / Device Settings / Form To Tray Assignment and use Printer / Document Defaults / Paper Source to select input sources.

The scaling factor reduces page and image size, but only increases image size. Few applications handle this. Use OutputScaling instead. Not all clipping issues have been addressed when using cut sheet. The definition of portrait on a transverse (landscape fed) page can led to clipping.

Application control of features, such as orientation or scaling, may override the document/printer properties and these properties may not work correctly with these applications. Graphics applications, especially PostScript applications, usually provide their own control of features.
The PPDs are copied to the system32\ spool\ drivers\ w32x86 folder during installation. If you are using an application which requires a PPD, you may have to copy it to the proper location for that application.

The job status can be monitored with the Printer Icon. To cancel a plotting job, use the Printer Icon, Document, Cancel menu option.

Problems

Applications which use the ppd files may need them copied to a specific location. Scaling works with few applications. Use OutputScaling instead. The following driver features are controlled by the application,

Adobe Illustrator 4.1 - Copies
Adobe Pagemaker 6.0 - Copies, Color Appearance, Paper Size, Orientation, Mirrored Output, Negative Output, OutputMode, OutputScaling
CorelDraw 6.0 - Rotated Landscape, Mirrored Output, Negative Output
Microsoft Powerpoint 7.0 - Copies
Microsoft Excel 7.0 - Orientation, OutputScaling
Micrografx Designer 6.0 - Copies, Mirrored Output
QuarkXpress 3.32 - Copies (Needs ppds in system folder)

Incorrect PostScript bitmap color maps may be generated when using 64K video colors.
