The instructions in this README are based upon the assumption that ActiveSync 3.1 or later has been installed on the host PC. You can download ActiveSync 3.1 or the new ActiveSync 3.5 host PC software from Microsoft's web site at: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsce/products/download/list.asp NOTE: This file may not appear properly formatted in all text editors. SocketScan allows the user to change scanning devices without changing or re-installing the SocketScan software. Includes minor bug fixes discovered since the last release. Includes increased functionality for the In-Hand Scan Card-Xtreme when scanning PDF417 bar codes. These enhancements also included in the SocketScan SDK v3.2. Socket file naming conventions have been changed to better fit Pocket PC displays. Please see the URGENT notice under Release Notes below if you currently have an older version of SocketScan installed on your Windows CE device. 2.0 WINDOWS CE FILE LOCATIONS This application consists of five files which are copied into the following directories: SCKTSCAN.EXE is copied into: \Program Files\Socket\SocketScan SIO950.DLL ISC.DLL GUNSCANNER.DLL SCANAPI.DLL are copied into: \ Windows 3.0 RELEASE NOTES URGENT: When loading SocketScan on any CE device, any existing version of SocketScan must first be uninstalled from both your CE device and your Host PC. Because of a change in Socket naming conventions, the new version will not replace the older version and a second SocketScan directory will be created. Please see Section 4.0 below for detailed uninstall procedures. URGENT: This software must be installed directly from this CD. When launching the CD and installing the software in Internet Explorer, a "File Download" window appears with the options to either "Run this program from it's current location" or "Save this program to disk". You must choose to "Run this program from it's current location". When the Security Warning screen appears, click Yes to continue. Because Netscape does not offer the option of running the program from the CD, Netscape cannot be used to install this software. If Netscape is set as the default browser on your system, open the Internet Explorer that came with your Windows operating system, click on File, then Open, browse to the CD and open setup.htm. The Palm-size PC v2.01 (the first versions of these units) are not supported. Though SocketScan may install to one of these devices, it is not guaranteed to work. Uninstalling this product from your CE device can cause a conflict if that device ALSO has a copy of Socket's Digital Phone Card software for Ericsson or Nokia GSM. The problem is that both programs share a file, SIO950.DLL. The uninstaller for these products erroneously removes this DLL despite the fact the file is still required for the other remaining software. As a result, uninstalling EITHER the SocketScan program OR the Digital Phone Card software will render the OTHER program inoperative. If you do not have BOTH of these programs on your CE device at the same time, there is no issue. If you do, the best workaround is to uninstall BOTH packages if you want one of them uninstalled, then re-install the software package that you want to keep. Socket apologizes for this inconvenience and will update the installers for these programs in the near future to prevent the need for this work-around. 4.0 UNINSTALL PROCEDURES Microsoft ActiveSync offers several options for uninstalling applications on your Windows CE device (e.g. Pocket PC, HPC 2000) Option 1 To uninstall directly on your Pocket PC using the Remove Program: a) Please remove the Socket scanning product from your mobile device and close the SocketScan software.
