Readme file for the Cross iPen Pro version 4.0
                      March 3, 1998

INTRODUCTION

The iPen Pro product includes both the Cross iPen hardware
as well as the following software products:

       Drivers for the iPen
       All-Write(TM) for Word 97
       All-Write(TM)

The driver software is what makes the iPen hardware work
with Windows. Be sure to use the ABSOLUTE mode of the
iPen when doing handwriting and drawing, such as with the
two All-Write products. To place the iPen into ABSOLUTE
mode, click on the leftmost iPen tablet icon in the
upper left corner of the iPen surface.

The two All-Write products provide you the ability to
annotate electronic documents as easily as you annotate paper
documents.

All-Write for Word 97 is useful to folks that have Word 97.

NOTE: if you have Microsoft Word, but haven't upgraded
to Word 97 yet, you don't have to buy the complete
Office upgrade to get to Word 97. You can purchase
an upgrade to Word 97 only for considerably under $100.
Of course All-Write allows you to annotate a Word
        document of any version.

Once installed, All-Write allows you to use your Cross iPen
and write directly on the Word document. It is that easy.
You put this to many uses;

  o Add a personal note
o Draw a map or other helpful diagram
o Make changes and comments on a document and email your
marked up document back to the originator.
o Add a signature to a letter or contract
o The "ink" you write is stored on Word's standard drawing
layer, so it is visible to most versions of Word. That is
the person you send your comments to does not have to have
Word 97. Note, that to send a marked up document to a
Word 95 user, you have to save the file in Word 95 format.

All-Write is a general purpose annotation application system.
It allows you to do the same kinds of thing the All-Write for
Word 97 product does, but it allows you to do it on virtually
any Windows document. So, you can, for example, mark up a spread
sheet, an email, or a project plan, on and on. The way All-Write
works is as follows:

o Get the document on the screen that you want to
     annotate
o "Print" to the "Cross All-Write" printer. This captures
the document, converts it to a special file format and
brings it up in the All-Write application, ready to be
     marked up.
o Send the "marked up document" as a file, as an email, or
as a fax. Send a file or email to anyone who has Windows.
Use the "self viewable file" option, which sends a file
that is viewed simply by double clicking it.

o Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 or later
o Microsoft Word 97 if you want ot use All-Write for Word 97

the CD-ROM into its drive. It will guide you through the
installation of which ever components you wish to use.

GETTING STARTED

If you install the full product, there is quite a bit to learn
as you get started.

IPEN HARDWARE AND DRIVER SOFTWARE - A good source for
information is the iPen User Guide. There really isn't much
to know. It just works like a pen. BE CAREFUL, the ipen has
two modes, selected by icons on its surface. Be sure to use
"absolute mode" (the big icon) when you do handwriting and
annotations.

NOTE: after you install the iPen drivers, you must reboot the
system before you can use the pen.

To view the iPen README file:

START - PROGRAMS - IPEN - IPEN README

ALL-WRITE FOR WORD 97 - A great place to start is by reading the
README file for this product. It contains a simple example of
annotation in Word. After you get started, be sure to use the
help system. It is loaded with information and tips. To access
the All-Write for Word 97 help, click the help icon on the
All-Write toolbar.

NOTE: after you install All-Write for Word 97 you can use it
immediately, if the iPen is operational. No reboot is
      required.

To view the All-Write for Word 97 README file:

  START - PROGRAMS - CROSS ALL-WRITE -
CROSS ALL-WRITE FOR WORD 97 README

ALL-WRITE - Likewise, a great place to start is by reading the
README file for this product. The README file was copied to your
hard drive as part of the installation. To view it: select
START, PROGRAMS, CROSS All-WRITE, README. After you get started,
be sure to use the help system. It is loaded with information and
tips.

NOTE: after you install All-Write you can use it immediately, if
the iPen is operational. No reboot is required.

  START - PROGRAMS - CROSS ALL-WRITE - CROSS ALL-WRITE README

UNINSTALLATION

Each component of the iPen Pro is installed as an independant
product. To uninstall any of the components, you must use the
control panel's Add/Remove programs feature as follows:

  o Use the START menu
  o Point to SETTINGS
  o Click on CONTROL PANEL
o Double click the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS icon
o In the list, click the component you wish to uninstall
  o Click the ADD/REMOVE... button

The product names to look for and uninstall are as follows:

o iPen - these are the hardware drivers, without these the
pen will not move the screen cursor.
o Cross All-Write - this is the annotate anything application.
o Cross All-Write for Word 97 - the word tool

TROUBLESHOOTING

If AutoPlay isn't working on your computer, you can run the setup
by using the START menu RUN and specifying SETUP.EXE in the root
directory of the CD-ROM.

Each component of the iPen Pro has its own SETUP program which
can be run individually. Each is in its own subdirectory on the
iPen Pro CD-ROM:

Root directory - SETUP.EXE is the multimedia introduction. When
you choose to Install the software, it runs SETUP.EXE in the
  INSTALL subdirectory.

Install subdirectory - SETUP.EXE is the iPen Pro installer. It
will automatically execute the following setups for you.

INSTALL\IPEN95 - SETUP.EXE is the iPen driver software for
  Windows 95

INSTALL\IPENNT - SETUP.EXE is the iPen driver software for
  Windows NT

INSTALL\ALLWRITE - SETUP.EXE is the setup program for
  All-Write

  INSTALL\ALLWRTWD - SETUP.EXE is the setup program for All-Write
  for Word 97.

Be aware of the following gotchas:

BE SURE TO USE ABSOLUTE MODE FOR HANDWRITING AND ANNOTATION.
The the ipen has two modes, selected by icons on the tablet
surface. Be sure to use "absolute mode" (the big icon on the
left) when you do handwriting and annotations. The RELATIVE
mode is best used when "mousing". It moves the screen cursor
very quickly relative to your hand motion.

You must have Microsoft Word 97 installed on your computer
before you are able to install All-Write for Word 97. You
cannot install these in the reverse order.

You may install a new release of All-Write for Word 97 over
an older release without first having to uninstall the older
version. If you do this, do not then run the uninstall for
the old version because it will render the new version
  inoperable.

To install a new version of the iPen drivers you must uninstall
any other version of the iPen drivers and then reboot before
  running the new install.

The iPen drivers use Wintab technology and will coexist with
some other Wintab based pointing devices but not all others.
The best policy is to uninstall any other Wintab drivers before
  installing the iPen drivers.

To install a new version of All-Write you must uninstall any
other version of All-Write and then reboot before running the
  new install.
