D-Link DSL-200 ADSL USB Modem ReadMe
Version 1.01.0005Q for Mac OS 8.6 9 and 10.2

*What Driver to Install:

The protocol used for your ADSL service will determine the particular software driver to be installed. You will need to select one driver to operate the Modem. Ask your DSL service provider to assist you in selecting either the RFC1483 Routed/Bridged or PPPoA/PPPoE driver to operate the Modem.

If you don't know which driver you should use, please contact with your ADSL or network service provider.

For Australia:
  1) For PPPoE users,the VPI/VCI is 8/35,please select the file "L_PoE835.zip"
     to install driver.
  2) For PPPoA (VC MUX/NULL) users,the VPI/VCI is 8/35,please select the file
     "V_PoA835.zip" to install driver.
  3) For RFC1483 Bridge LLC users,the VPI/VCI is 8/35,please select the file
     "L_B835.zip" to install driver.
  4) For RFC1483 Routed LLC users,the VPI/VCI is 8/35,please select the file
     "L_R835.zip" to install driver.
  5) For RFC1483 Routed VC MUX users,the VPI/VCI is 8/35,please select the
     file "V_R835.zip" to install driver.

For NewZealand:
  1) For PPPoE users, the VPI/VCI is 0/100,please select the file
     "L_PoENZ.zip" to install driver.
  2) For RFC1483 Bridge LLC users,the VPI/VCI is 0/100,please select the file
     "L_BNZ.zip" to install driver.
  3) For PPPoA (VC MUX/NULL) users,the VPI/VCI is 0/100,please select the
     file "V_PoANZ.zip" to install driver.

For Other ISP:

  1) For RFC1483 Routed LLC users,the VPI/VCI is 1/32,please select the file
     "L_RL132.zip" to install driver.
  2) For RFC1483 Routed VC MUX users,the VPI/VCI is 1/32,please select the
     file "L_RV132.zip" to install driver.
  3) For PPPoA(VC MUX/NULL) users,the VPI/VCI is 1/34,please select the file
     "OA_V134.zip" to install driver.
  4) For PPPoA LLC users, the VPI/VCI is 1/34,please select the file
     "OA_L134.zip" to install driver.

*Known limitations:
1. No plug and play installation

If the driver is not installed and you plug the USB Modem in, there WILL NOT be a pop up Window informing you that a new device has been detected. This is the way the Mac OSX Operating System was designed, it is not a driver problem.

2. Need to restart the system after installing or uninstalling

This is a requirement of the Mac OSX Operating System. Apple indicates that they are working on an update to the Operating System that will allow the user to avoid these restarts. As of the time of this writing (Mac OSX 10.1.5 and Mac OSX 10.2 are the latest versions of the OS) this problem is a limitation of the Operating System and not a driver problem.

3. Support for only one Instance.

Only one instance of the Modem is supported. A second modem plugged to the system will not work and may cause the original to stop working as well

Unplug / replug of drivers derived of the IOEthernetController class do not support unplug/replug due to a known bug in Mac OSX 10.1's LAN Networking stack. Apple has acknowledged this problem and it will be fixed in OSX 10.2 "Jaguar", but at the time of this writing Apple's position is that it will not be "retrofitted" to previous versions of Mac OSX. In order to overcome this important limitation in OSX 10.1, GlobespanVirata's original "monolithic" glausb.kext driver was re-architected into two drivers: glalusb.kext and glauusb.kext. In order to keep the same architecture the "monolithic" gwausb.kext was also split into gwawusb.kext and gwauusb.kext.

The glalusb.kext (gwauusb.kext) can only support one instance of glauusb.kext (gwauusb.kext) registered to it, thus the limitation of only one modem instance supported.

4. LAN Driver MAC Address after unplug/replug

Due to the re-architecture explained in (4) above, the Mac Address for the LAN driver is read from the device the very first time the device is plugged after a system shutdown/restart. If you unplug a modem and then plug in a different modem that has a different mac address, the system will not read the new mac address and will just use the very first one it read.

*Introduction

a. Control / Status Panel Application. This application, named 'ADSL USB Modem .app', can be used with either the LAN or WAN drivers and provides status information about the USB physical connection. In its advanced/debug mode it also provides physical link and ATM statistics, and controls that allows the user to force an Abort and/or Retrain of the DSL link.
b. The Installer. An application that facilitates an easy menu driven installation of the driver and control/status panel to the proper locations in the system directories.
