TECHNICAL SUPPORT ------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. SOFTWARE DESCRIPTION This CD-ROM release is an update to SR02-2.2. Where SR02-2.2 was designed for Plug & Play installations, this CD SR02-2.2b is designed for Easy Installations using the "Wireless LAN CD-Wizard", based on the same versions of drivers and tools. The "Wireless LAN CD-Wizard" is a Windows-based navigation tool to browse the contents of this Wireless LAN CD-ROM. This navigation tool includes: - an interactive wizard to assist users of Wireless LAN adapters to connect their computer to an existing wireless network. - an overview of wireless documentation and software provided on the CD-ROM. The CD-Wizard is "operating system aware", which means it will detect both language and type of operating system of the host computer, and automatically: - address the user in the same language as the host computer - display only the information/choices that apply to the operating system of the user's computer. The wizard will only run on computers running the MS-Windows operating systems listed in section 2. System Requirements. 1.2 Files Installed The CD-Wizard will only install files and software upon command/ selection of the user on the screens of the CD-Wizard. Only in situations where the Microsoft Windows Compiled Help Viewer on your computer is unavailable or older than v.4.74, it will run the Microsoft Compiled Help Viewer update (hhupdate.exe). This would typically only happen on computers running MS-Windows 95 or MS-Windows NT 4.0. 1.3 Other Files & Versions Agere Wireless LAN Drivers & Client Manager software & help files * Windows PC card drivers 7.82.0.354 (WHQL certified) * Windows USB Client drivers 7.82.0.354 (see Section 5.2) * Windows CE drivers 7.82 (subject to the version of the Windows CE operating system) * Client Manager 3.04 Agere Wireless LAN CD-Wizard * EZ-install engine - EZSetup.exe 1.0.0.7 - EZCOMP.dll 1.0.1.1 * CHM Front-end 1.10.i (Interactive Instructions Wizard) * Driver Installer 1.3.0.3 (Back-end Installation shell for Driver and Client Manager) * WLDetect Tool 1.0.3.0 (Wireless LAN Device Detection and uninstall Tool) Adobe Systems files * Adobe Acrobat PDF Reader v5.05 ------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. To view the animations you will need to have the Macromedia Flash player installed as a plug-in to your standard internet browser. Most of today's computers support the Flash plug-in by default. If your computer does not support the Flash plug-in, the CD-Wizard will automatically prompt you to do so when you open a text page that includes a Flash animation. To install the latest version of the plugin, you may need an internet connection. You can continue using the CD-Wizard without loading the plug-in, however in that case you will not be able to view the supporting animations. 2.4 Acrobat Reader Some of the documents provided on the CD-ROM are in Adobe Acrobat PDF format. To view or print these documents, you will need to have the Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer. This CD-ROM includes a version of the Adobe Acrobat Reader v5.05 in a limited number of languages. Client Manager Installation a) First install the drivers as described above. b) Navigate to the folder \software\cl_mgr on the CD-ROM c) Double click the file setup.exe to install the Client Manager program. ------------------------------------------------------------------- 5. TECHNICAL CONSTRAINTS 5.1 Wireless Adapter does not work under Windows 2000 Description: On some computer systems with a recent BIOS (later than December 2001) the wireless adapters based on a PCI bus interface may not work properly. Affected hardware: * MiniPCI adapter * PCI Swapbox adapters based on the Ti 1410 chip * PCI Swapbox adapters based on the Ti 1225 chip Affected Windows 2000 versions: * MS-Windows 2000, 2000 SP1, 2000 SP2, Professional * MS Windows 2000, 2000 SP1, 2000 SP2, Server * MS-Windows 2000, 2000 SP1, 2000 SP2, Advanced Server Perceived defect behavior: Although the installation of drivers and software in the works ok for the Windows 2000 operating system, the adapter does not get/renew an automatically assigned IP Address. Impact: Your computer will not be able to connect to networks that use the TCP/IP protocol. Most of today's networks use TCP/IP for standard network traffic. TCP/IP is mandatory for internet access. Resolution: Whether this issue will occur is related to the hardware of the host computer system. In most cases it can be resolved easily by installing a Microsoft Windows 2000 patch (post Service Pack 2 update) that you can download from the Microsoft website at: http://www.support.microsoft.com On this page use the Search option to search for the item "Q265296". From the results select the option: "Toshiba PC Card Controller May Power 3.3-Volt R2 PC Card at 5 Volts (Q265296)" Download the item "Q265296_w2k_sp3_x86_en.exe" and follow the Microsoft instructions for this update. 5.2 USB Device may hang when connected to non-Agere Base Station Description: In exceptional circumstances you may encounter situations where the USB Client driver hangs when it is connected (associated) with non-Agere Base Station. This situation may typically appear in situations where the infrastructure includes a Cisco 350 access point, that has fragmentation enabled, using a nominal threshold value, such as 400 bytes. Impact: A data transfer may timeout in app. 10 seconds, leaving the connection lost. The connection can only be restored if the device is dis- and reconnected Resolution: If your network includes Cisco 350 Access Points Disable fragmentation. Agere will release USB adapter drivers with a fix for this problem via their web site as soon as this fix will become available. ------------------------------------------------------------------- 6. KNOWN ISSUES 6.1 CD-Wizard does not start automatically The Windows operating system includes the option to enable/disable the feature that allows CD-ROMs to start automatically. By default this option is enabled, allowing the CD-Wizard to start automatically. On some computer systems however, the LAN Administrator or another user may have disabled the "AutoPlay" feature. If the CD-Wizard does not start automatically, use your Explorer to display the contents of the CD-ROM, and double click the file EZSETUP.EXE. 6.2 No option to select a different language The Wireless LAN wizard only supports the languages listed in section 4.2 above. This is a feature that will be added in a next release. 6.3 CD-Wizard prompts to run hhupd.exe If the EZ Install wizard prompts you to update your CHM viewer your computer is running an older version of the Compiled HTML Help viewer. Running this Microsoft update program will resolve the error without affecting further behavior of your computer. 6.4 CD-Wizard prompts to update Internet Explorer If the CD-Wizard prompts you to update Internet Explorer your computer is running an older version of the Compiled HTML Help viewer (which is actually a part of the Internet Explorer. If the version of your Internet Explorer is older than v4.0, the Microsoft update program hhupd.exe (see 6.3) will not be sufficient to ensure compatibility of the MS-Windows Compiled HTML Viewer with the CD-Wizard functionality. To resolve the issue, update the Internet Explorer on your computer. The Internet Explorer update is available free of charge from the Microsoft website. - For Windows 95 select Internet Explorer v5.5 Service Pack 2 - For all versions of Windows select Internet Explorer v6.0 or higher. See also Section 2 System Requirements Note that this update of Internet Explorer does not prevent you from using another internet browser of your choice to surf the internet. 6.5 CD-Wizard prompts to install Macromedia Flash Player. See Section System Requirements, 2.3 Macromedia Flash Player. 6.6 Prompt that shlwapi.dll is missing Description: This issue typically only occurs on Windows NT 4.0 systems running an older version of the Internet Explorer. Impact: CD-Wizard will not start Resolution: Download and install the latest version of the Internet Explorer and try again 6.7 PCI Card and Wake-On-LAN Support This information is not applicable to the Ti1410/Ti1225 based PCI adapters. The PCI Card (the PCI adapter that comes with a factory-installed radio card) supports the "Magic Packet" for WakeOnLAN to allow the Wakeup from Hibernate and wakeup from standby mode for computers running one of the Microsoft operating systems below: - MS-Windows 98 and 98 SE (Second Edition) - MS-Windows 2000 - MS-Windows Me (Millennium Edition) - MS-Windows XP Home/Professional Edition WakeOnLAN requirements: - Your computer runs a BIOS version that supports WakeOnLAN Consult your computer manufacturer for BIOS updates for your computer. - A properly installed Windows installation Use your Windows Device Manager to verify that there are no question marks or exclamation marks. If there are conflicts or issues reported by the Windows Device Manager, consult the Internet for updated drivers. To activate WakeOnLAN: 1) Look into the BIOS and familiarize yourself with WakeOnLAN-related settings. 2) Determine the PCI version compliancy level of the motherboard of your computer: * For motherboards that are PCI V2.2 compliant: a) Do not connect the 3 wire WOL cable. b) Make sure you insert the Wireless LAN PCI Card into the PCI slot that supports wake-up. Note that some motherboards only support WakeOnLAN in specific PCI slots. (3v3aux). * For motherboards that are PCI V2.1 compliant, connect the the 3-wire WOL cable. 3) Start your computer, and use the Windows Control Panel to check if your computer supports Hibernation. a) Open the Control Panel, and double-click the item "Power Options" b) Check if the windows "Power Options Properties" includes a tab called "Hibernate": * If YES, your computer supports WakeOnLAN (proceed with step 4). * If NO, your computer does not support WakeOnLAN. 4) Start the Windows Device Manager and display the properties for the PCI Card. 5) Next select the Advanced tab. 6) Set Wake On LAN to the value on an click OK. 7) Next, proceed as described below for the operating system of your computer: * For Windows 95/98/ME: restart your system. * For Windows 2000/XP: go to step (8) 8) a) Start the windows Device manager and display the properties of the Wireless LAN PCI Card b) Next select the Power Management tab c) Check the items: * "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power * "allow this device to bring the computer out of standby". d) Click OK to confirm your choices and exit the Device Manager. This will complete the procedure to enable WakeOnLAN. 6.8 Control Panel Applet shows error message during Easy install. Description: When using the CD-Wizard to identify a profile, and install the drivers and Client Manager, on some computer systems the Control Panel pops-up prompting the user to enter profile settings. When the user closes the applet clicking the OK button, the applet generates the error message "Can not Access the PC Card, please re-insert the PC Card". Impact: This is a timing issue that occurs only on computers running MS-Windows 98/Me. Although there is no need for the Windows operating system to prompt for driver parameters, MS-Windows activates the driver and its Control Panel Applet before it has actually detected the presence of the hardware. Resolution If the user ignores the error message, the wireless adapter will work just fine. This issue will be resolved in a future release. 6.9 Easy install does not update Client Manager. Description: When using the CD-Wizard to update the drivers and Client Manager, the CD-Wizard does not always update the Client Manager. Impact: The CD-Wizard/Easy Install is designed to provide a single click installation routine for Drivers and Client Manager. When the Driver Installer of the CD-Wizard detects an older device driver installation it will prompt the user to remove before continuing to install the newer version. However when running the Driver installer, it can not simultaneously run another Installshield application to remove the Client Manager. In most situations there will be no compatibility issue using the older Client Manager with the updated driver. Neither would there be any noticeable difference for day-to-day operation by an end-user. Resolution: End-users can continue using the older version of Client Manager. Beta testers or any user that prefers running the latest version can easily update Client Manager by activating the Client Manager installer (setup.exe) in the folder \software\cl_mgr. 6.10 MS-Windows shows error after updating drivers with CD-Wizard Description: When re-inserting the wireless adapter after using the CD-Wizard update feature, the MS-Windows operating system may show the error message: "Error during installation, Cannot install this hardware. The system can not find the file specified". Impact: When updating the drivers using the CD-Wizard, the Driver installer will replace the old driver information file (wnxxx.inf) with a newer copy. The MS-windows operating system however will memorize the settings of removed *.inf files until the user restarts the computer. Therefore when using the CD-Wizard to update drivers the user should always restart the computer prior to re-inserting/reconnecting the wireless adapter. At present the Driver installer does not present a prompt or mechanism to ensure the user restarts the computer. Resolution: When updating the drivers and Client Manager, always restart the computer before you (re-)connect the wireless adapter. To restore the error: 1) Run the wldetect tool from the folder \xtras\wldetect\wldetect.exe This will remove the faulty installation and restore your computer to a "clean" state. 2) Next run the CD-Wizard as if you are about to install the wireless LAN drivers and Client Manager for the first time on a new/clean computer. Note that in this case the wldetect tool will remove all previously defined profile settings. 6.11 WinCE 4.0 driver does not support encryption Description: No (network) connection can be established to networks that use encryption. To networks without encryption, you can establish a connection. This happens with PC-short Card and Compact-Flash. Impact: When transferring data the frames are sent un-encrypted causing a security risk. Resolution: Agere Systems will provide an updated release containing a fixed driver for WinCE 4.0 on short notice. The release will be made available via the Agere Systems website http://www.agere.com/client/wlan.html In the meantime you are advised to install and use the WinCE 3.0 driver. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 7.
