                 Backpack CD-ROM OS/2 Driver Version 2.04

This version is intended for use with current Backpack CD-ROM drive models.

It will not recognize original model 160550 (Single Speed) and 162550
(Double Speed) Backpack CD-ROM drives.  The file to obtain which provides
support for those two original Backpack CD-ROM models is:  BPCD106.EXE which
contains both DOS and OS/2 drivers and installation steps in its README.TXT.

TECHNICAL NOTE -  Backpack CD-ROM Installation onto an OS/2 Computer

This document describes installing the Backpack CD-ROM onto an existing
OS/2 system.  The original OS/2 installation diskettes must be available.

1)   Open the OS/2 System folder.

2)   Open the System Setup folder.

3)   Choose Device Install.

4)   Follow the instructions displayed.  Insert the Backpack CD-ROM
     installation diskette when prompted.

In addition, if there was not already a CD-ROM installed on the system,
run Selective Install to set up the OS/2 CD-ROM support.

1)   Open the OS/2 System folder, then System Setup.

2)   Open Selective Install.

3)   Select the CD-ROM Device Support check box.

4)   Choose OK, then scroll down the CD-ROM device list and select the
     choice:  Other.

5)   Select OK to go from the System Configuration screen to the Setup
     and Installation Window.

6)   Select Install, and follow the instructions displayed.


One or more of the OS/2 installation diskettes will be prompted for.
The Backpack CD-ROM will be available after re-starting the system.


Note:     If the Backpack does not appear after re-starting the system,
          make sure that the following lines appear in the CONFIG.SYS
          and that the files exist on the hard drive:

     ifs=\os2\cdfs.ifs /q
     device=\os2\mdos\vcdrom.sys
     device=\os2\os2cdrom.dmd

     or

     ifs=\os2\cdfs.ifs /q
     device=\os2\boot\mdos\vcdrom.sys
     device=\os2\boot\os2cdrom.dmd



TECHNICAL NOTE - OS/2 on CD-ROM installation from a Backpack CD-ROM Drive

OS/2 is distributed either on a set of diskettes or on two diskettes and
a CD-ROM disc.  This document describes procedures for initially installing
OS/2 from CD-ROM using the Backpack CD-ROM drive.

NOTE:  These instructions require that a computer running DOS or OS/2,
a DISKCOPY program and a text editor such as DOS EDLIN, EDIT or
OS/2 EDIT be available.

1)   OS/2 on CD-ROM comes with 2 diskettes for booting up the computer:
     the Installation Diskette and Diskette 1.

2)   Make a copy of Diskette 1 with DISKCOPY.

3)   Copy the Micro Solutions device driver BPCDOS2.ADD to the copy of
     Diskette 1.

4)   Edit the file CONFIG.SYS on the Diskette 1 copy and add the line:

     basedev=bpcdos2.add

5)   Proceed with the installation according to the IBM documentation,
     using the copy of Diskette 1.


With most versions of OS/2 the support for the Backpack CD-ROM will not be
preserved when the installation is complete and the computer is restarted.
To permanently install the Backpack CD-ROM support:

1)   Boot up the OS/2 system.

2)   From the Installation Diskette 1 copy that you used above, copy
     the files: CDFS.IFS and OS2CDROM.DMD to the \OS2 directory on the
     installed system hard drive.   Copy: BPCDOS2.ADD to the root
     directory of the hard drive.

3)   Edit CONFIG.SYS on the OS/2 system hard drive and add the lines:

     ifs=\os2\cdfs.ifs /q
     device=\os2\mdos\vcdrom.sys
     device=\os2\os2cdrom.dmd
     basedev=bpcdos2.add

4)   Shut down and re-boot the system.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

• Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

• If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

• Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

• Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

• Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

• From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

• Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
