3. Some General Tips on Usage

o Depending on the application you use, you may experience an
out-of-memory error or similar error during scanning, or you
may notice a reduction in scanning speed when you are scanning
a large number of images or an especially large image. Also,
the operation system may not operate correctly. In this case,
  follow these guidelines:

(1) Ensure that you have sufficient storage space on your hard
disk by deleting unneeded files, or by adding an additional
     hard disk to your system.
(2) Scan the images at a lower resolution setting.
(3) Add memory (RAM) to your system.
(4) Set the virtual memory setting for the largest possible
     setting allowed by your system.
(5) Divide originals into several sets and then scan them
     separately.

o Always close the WIA Network ScanGear main window before you
  exit the parent application program.

o With some applications the WIA Network ScanGear main window
or the dialog box showing the scanning progress may cover the
messages displayed by the parent application program in the
background and it may appear that scanning or acquisition by
the parent application program has been interrupted. In this
case, click the parent application program window to bring the
  windows to the foreground.

o If you are using an operating system equipped with Windows
Firewall and have enabled the Windows Firewall settings, to use
the WIA Network ScanGear driver, click the [Exceptions] tab in
the [Windows Firewall Settings] dialog box -> click [Add
  Program] -> add WIA Services.

o If you are using an operating system equipped with Windows
Firewall and have enabled the Windows Firewall settings, to use
the device selection function, click the [Exceptions] tab in the
[Windows Firewall Settings] dialog box -> click [Add Program]
-> add the Device Selection sheet. If you use the device
selection function without adding it to Windows Firewall
exceptions, an alarm message may be displayed.

o If you have set an original size that is not supported due to
the regional version of the device, the original may be scanned
at a larger size or the end of the original may be cropped.

o Use WIA Network ScanGear in combination with applications that
comply with the WIA 2.0 standard, such as Windows Fax and Scan and
  Windows Photo Gallery.

o WIA Network ScanGear operations are not supported in the Windows Server
  2008 Server Core environment.

o If you are using WIA Network ScanGear with Windows Server 2008,
activate the Desktop Experience feature and start the WIA service.

  - Setting Up Windows Desktop Experience
    (1) Click [Start], and select [Administrative Tools] - [Server Manager].
        [Server Manager] is displayed.
    (2) Click [Features].
    (3) Click [Add Features] in [Features].
    (4) Select [Desktop Experience].
        NOTE:
If you are using Windows Server 2008 R2, and the message
[Add features required for Desktop Experience?] is displayed, add
the features according to the instructions.
    (5) Click [Next].
    (6) Click [Install].
    (7) Restart according to the displayed instructions.

  - Starting WIA Services
    (1) Click [Start], and select [Administrative Tools] -
        [Computer Management].
    (2) Double-click [Services and Applications].
    (3) Double-click [Services].
    (4) Double-click [Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)].
    (5) Change [Startup type] in the [General] tab to [Automatic].
    (6) Click [Apply].
    (7) Click [OK].

o If the actual document size and the paper size set in the driver differ,
an error may occur in the device.

o If the operatnig system includes the Windows Firewall function and that
function has been enabled, it may take some time for scanning to finish.
Verify whether UDP ports can be registered as exceptions in the [Exceptions]
sheet of Windows Firewall. Normally such exceptions are automatically
registered at the time of installation. If the appropriate UDP port has not
been registered, it will have to be registered manually.
The above procedures vary according to the edition and system settings of the
  operating system you are using.
