Readme file for Printer Firmware Downloader. (Version 1.0.0.4)

Printer Firmware Downloader (PFD.EXE) runs on Windows 9x and Windows NT4
for the x86 architecture. It requires that you have the TCP/IP networking
protocol installed. Also required is the MFC42 runtime library (which
should be present on your machine).

To run, simply double click on the icon.

You will be presented with a dialog box with 3 fields which must be
filled in. The first of these is the IP address of the printer that
you are updating. The address is entered in the standard internet
form, XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX, with each part being 0 to 255. If an invalid
address is entered, it will be detected when you press OK.

The next field is the port which is to be used. This is numbered
from 0 to 65535. The value 9100 is entered by default.

The final field is the file to be downloaded. Either enter the full
path to the desired file, or use the BROWSE button to search for it.
You may also drag a file from a folder to this field where it will
be entered.

When you are ready, press OK to start the download or CANCEL to
abort and close the program. After pressing OK, you will have one
more chance to change your mind before the download starts.

Once the download has started, you can cancel it at any time by
pressing the CANCEL button that appears. Please note that canceling
the download may leave the printer in a start requiring physical
intervention, and, in some cases, may cause the printer to become
unusable.

While the download is in progress, the program will show the number
of bytes transfered, along with the total so you can see the progress.
Please be patient as the firmware files can be quite large.

Check Boxes
-----------

A check box is available which controls whether or not the program will
exit after downloading a file. If the check box is checked, the program
will exit after a successful download. If the box is not checked, the
program will remain open with all the settings unchanged.

Command Line Arguments
----------------------

/pNNN - The value NNN is entered into the port field.
	/p NNN - Same

/fSSSSS - The string SSSSS is entered into the file field
	/f SSSSS - Same

/aNNN.NNN.NNN.NNN - The string is entered in the address field
	/a NNN.NNN.NNN.NNN - Same

NNN.NNN.NNN.NNN - the string is entered into the address field.
Note that there is no "/".

/c - Do not display confirmation dialog.

Integration With Remote Control Software (RCS)
----------------------------------------------

The Printer Firmware Downloader may be integrated with Remote
Control Software (RCS) so that it shows up in the right click menu
for an agent. To do this, read the information in the RCS
Administrator's Manual on adding external programs and then
associate this program with the appropriate printer.
When setting up the external program, enter IPADDRESS as the only
argument. When you right click an agent and choose FDL.EXE,
the Printer Firmware Downloader will be launched with the appropriate
printer selected.

Use as a printer tool
---------------------

This program may also be used to send pre-formatted PostScript and PCL
files to a network printer. This is useful if you need to access a
network printer for which the printer drivers or network printer port
has not yet been setup.

It is also useful for sending PostScript files directly to a printer
that do not need further formatting, such as those sometimes supplied
as documentation.

To use the program in this manner, choose the appropriate address and
port (see your printer documentation for this) and browse for the file
you want printed.

Shortcuts
---------

It is possible to create a shortcut to a printer that is commonly used.
To do this, right click on the background and choose "New", then "Shortcut"
(or right click drag the PFDLoad icon to the desktop and choose "Create
Shortcut(s) Here"). To customize it for a specific printer, right click
the shortcut and choose "properties". Go to the end of the "Targe" field
and add the needed flag parameters. For example, for a printer with the
IP address 10.10.111.120 that uses port 35 for printing, you would add the
string "/p 35 /a 10.10.111.120" (without the quotes). Note that there is a
space in front of the "/p". When you click on this shortcut, PFD will
start and and the chosen fields filled in.

Send To
-------

You can also put PFD on the "Send To" menu that you get from right clicking
on an object. To do this, create a batch file in the SendTo directory.
This directory may either be in the windows directory (for Windows 9x) or
in the windows\profiles\USER_NAME directory (for Windows NT). This batch
file should have one line "X:\path_to_PFD\PFD.exe /F %1". You may also put
any other parameters you want, such as the IP address or port to use.
You may then wish to change the properties of this batch file by right clicking
on it and choosing "Properties". On the "Program" tab, make sure that
"Close on exit" is checked and also that it runs "minimized".

-------
Changes from version 1.0.0.3
A check box has been added. If checked (the default) the program
will exit after a file has been downloaded, if unchecked,
the program will remain open and ready to download again.
Changes from version 1.0.0.2
A space between the argument flag and the argument is no longer
necessary (but is not required). For example, "/f foo" and
		"/ffoo" are equivalent.
Leading 0's in the IP address field are no longer cause for the
address to be considered illegal. The leading 0's are now
		ignored.
	Additional arguments documented.

Changes from version 1.0.0.1
You can now drag files to the file entry control
