Problem(s) this Update Resolves:
================================
1. When you are using certain removable IDE disk drives in Windows 95, one
or more of the following symptoms may occur:
- The removable drive is not detected or not accessible within
Windows 95.
- Media changes, such as removing a disk and inserting a new disk, are
not detected and are not reflected in Windows Explorer.
- The removable drive appears as a non-removable hard disk in Windows
Explorer or Device Manager.
2. The ATAPI IDE driver in Windows 95 (Esdi_506.pdr) does not include
functionality for the following features:
- SMART support (the ability for certain programs to predict whether a
hard disk failure may occur)
- DMA support for ATAPI devices
- ATAPI tape drive support
3. When certain IDE hard disks are configured to spin down during idle time
to conserve power, you may experience the following symptoms when you
access the hard disk after it has spun down:
- Incorrect data is read from and/or written to the drive
- You receive general protection (GP) faults
4. When you are running a program that causes a large number of writes to
occur very rapidly to an IDE drive, you may receive the following error
message on a blue screen:
Disk Write Error
Unable to write to disk in drive <x>:
Data or files may be lost
5. With certain motherboards with certain BIOS versions, and with an
Iomega IDE Zip drive installed on the secondary IDE channel, a Fatal
Exception Error may occur when booting with no disk in the ZIP drive,
or when ejecting the disk and opening the Zip drive without a disk in
the drive. This issue is known to occur with Intel motherboards
(including Ruby, Thor, Natasha, and possibly other models) using AMI
BIOS with Intel BIOS customizations.
6. If Auto Insert Notification is enabled when certain IDE CD-ROM drives and
other IDE devices are installed in a system with Advanced Power Management
support, the system may not be able to automatically suspend after the
required period of inactivity.
7. When using IDE hard drives or CD-ROM drives which are capable of double-
speed (2x) data transfers (also known as Ultra DMA/33), loss of performance
and unrecovered hardware errors may be encountered.
8. On computers running Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2 (OSR2), 2.1, or 2.5
only, if you use a removable drive for the paging drive and then eject the
drive while Windows is running, your computer may stop responding (hang),
or you may receive a Fatal Exception error message. Without this update,
OSR2 and later do not prevent the paging drive from being ejected by right-
clicking the drive icon in Windows Explorer, and then clicking Eject.
