Overview



This is the firmware update GA05 for the Toshiba Samsung Storage Technology (TSST) DVD+/-RW dual layer drive, model number TS-H552B.  The firmware should be flashed if:



1.  You have a TSST DVD+/-RW dual layer drive model number TS-H552B (part number 102794, 5503368, TMETS-H552B, WMETS-H552B, or WMETS-H552BBlack).



2.  You are experiencing problems reading or burning certain media.



3.  A Gateway technician has told you to update the firmware.





Identification



The model of the TSST DVD drive is listed as "TSSTcorpCD/DVDW" in the BIOS Setup utility and "TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H552B" in Device Manager. 



1. Open Control Panel. 



 From the Windows XP default Start menu, click Control Panel. 

 From the Windows XP classic Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. 



2. In Control Panel, open the System Properties dialog box. 



 If the computer is in Category View, click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System. 

 If the computer is in Classic View, double-click the System icon. 



3. In the System Properties dialog box, click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager. 



4. Device Manager opens. In the Device Manager, click the plus (+) sign next to DVD/CD-ROM drives.  "TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H552B" should be listed under DVD/CD-ROM drives.





Installation



Download the firmware file to the desktop, and then perform the following steps.



Because many programs can affect the way this firmware flash is completed, it is critical that all programs are closed.



1.  On your screen, double-click the firmware update file that you downloaded. 



2.  The files self-extract and copy into the C:\Cabs\FirmwareGA05 folder. 



3.  From the Start menu, click Run.



4.  In the Run dialog box, type: C:\Cabs\FirmwareGA05\SFDNWIN_3.21.1.exe.  Click OK.



5.  In the SFDNWIN dialog box, click the Download File Open button in the upper left corner.



6.  In the Open dialog box, locate the GA05_060308.bin file in the C:\Cabs\FirmwareGA05 folder, and then click Open.



7.  In the SFDNWIN dialog box, click the Start Download button in the upper left corner.



8.  The firmware is flashed.



9.  In the Message dialog box, click OK to restart the computer.



10.  The computer restarts and installation is complete.





Removal



The firmware cannot be removed.





Troubleshooting



If you have trouble flashing the firmware, try the process again following the steps listed in the Installation section of this document.  If you are still unable to update the firmware, check the following:



1.  Verify that the drive has power by opening and closing the drive door.



2.  Reseat the IDE cable.



3.  Reseat the power connector on the back of the drive.



4.  Verify the jumper setting and cable configuration.



5.  Re-download the file and try running the firmware flash again.



6.  If this process still fails, contact technical support.

This is the latest firmware qualified for the Toshiba Samsung Storage Technology (TSST) DVD+/-RW Dual Layer Drive model number TS-H552B.
