Setting up fixed tty names under SCO UNIX

This procedure provides fixed tty names under SCO UNIX.

It requires a modified version of the IOLAND and some minor modifications to your system configuration.

Be sure to use the the new Ioland from the web that supports the -F (Fixed tty flag) you can check this by checking the ioland.lg and you should have version 3.4.07x)

Please use the following procedure:

1) Modify system device names.

You must rename pairs of pseudotty master and slave devices:
(These devices are normally named ttyp* and pty*. The come in pairs Eg: ttyp1 is the slave device corresponding to ptyp1.)

It is recommended that you start the renumbering from the second highest minor device for example ttyp30 and ptyp30 example below.

Go into cd /dev and type the following

Move ttyp30 tty30 (or a name of your choice)

Move ptyp30 Tty30 (or a name of your choice)

2) Edit the files /etc/conf/node.d/mpt and /etc/conf/node.d/spt.
Change the standard device names in these files to the names that you have chosen in the above procedure.

3) Modify /ect/inittab using vi to start the ioland and gettys on the new device names.

Here are the lines that we need to check for the example above:

C30:2:respawn:/etc/getty tty30 m

X01:2:once:/[path]/ioland -F [Iolan name] 10001 Tty30 tty30 (10001 being port 1 on the iolan)
The -F flag requires the name of the master device followed by the slave device as the last two parameters.

4) If you know the terminal type that you are connecting to the port you can enter it using the following:

vi /etc/ttytype on the tty that you have made you will see
 unknown tty30
you can change this to the terminal type that you are using Eg:
 ansi tty30

5) Set-up your Iolan. Set the port that you are using to remote access.
Start the getty and ioland processes with the following command.
Kill -1 1 (This forces the init process to reread the inittab file.
