Troubleshooting Install and Uninstall Problems ================================================= Installing with CD-ROM on Windows 95 ===================================== If the "New Hardware Found" screen displays, close it by clicking the X in the upper right corner or click on the Cancel button. Insert the HP Printer/Scanner/Copier CD into the CD-ROM drive, or if you have floppy disks, insert Disk #1 into the floppy drive. If you're installing from the CD, the HP Printer/Scanner/Copier installation screen will be displayed after a few seconds. If just the Windows 95 desktop is displayed: Click the Start button on the Task bar, then choose Run. Type D:\setup.exe; where "D:" represents the letter of your CD-ROM drive. Click OK. At the HP Printer/Scanner/Copier Welcome screen, click Install the HP Printer/Scanner/Copier on your PC to begin installing the software. Unable to install or uninstall ========================================== If you encounter errors or problems during install or uninstall, it may be possible to get to a state in which neither installation or uninstallation is possible. Please call HP technical support for assistance. Insufficient free space to install the software =============================================== The HP Printer/Scanner/Copier software requires approximately 35Mb of free disk space to install. 1. If you have only one hard drive, you must remove other files or applications no longer needed to make enough free space for the software. 2. If you have two or more hard drives, you may install the software to an alternate location on another hard drive. Use the "Change..." button in the installation to choose an alternate installation location. However, the HP Printer/Scanner/Copier software requires some files be located in the Windows and Windows system directories, and the hard drive that contains the Windows installation may not have sufficient free space to enable an installation. Again, you must remove other files to make enough free space for the software. Installer cannot find your HP Printer/Scanner/Copier on the =========================================================== LPT port ======== Check the following: 1. Insure that your HP Printer/Scanner/Copier is plugged in and powered ON. 2. Insure the printer cable is properly seated into the connector at the rear of the HP Printer/Scanner/Copier and into the proper LPT port on your PC. 3. Make sure you are using an IEEE 1284 compliant cable (we recommend you use the cable that came with your Printer/Scanner/Copier). 4. Insure that there is no other device connected between the HP Printer/Scanner/Copier and the PC, such as a Zip (TM) drive, switch box, etc. 5. Make sure that you are not running other software that uses the same LPT port as your Printer/Scanner/Copier (for example, a Zip(TM) drive, other printer, etc.) ***************************************************************** B. ECP and Bi-directional Interfaces ==================================== What does bi-directional or ECP do for my HP ============================================ Printer/Scanner/Copier Series 300? ================================== The typical printer only receives information from the computer. This is a one-way transaction. A multi-function peripheral such as the HP Printer/Scanner/Copier Series 300 needs to send information to the computer. To send information back to the computer requires a two-way or bi-directional interface. When using a bi-directional interface. Attach your HP Printer/Scanner/Copier directly to your computer's parallel port using the cable provided in the box. Do not attach your device to the pass-through port of another parallel product such as a CD-ROM drive, tape drive, Zip(TM) drive, or external hard disk. Centronics® or Standard Parallel Port (SPP) (minimum) =========================================== The HP Printer/Scanner/Copier can carry out bi-directional communication on most standard parallel ports. However, the parallel ports of some PC models do not implement all of the signals required for bi-directional communications. Data transfer rates are lowest in this configuration, particularly when the HP Printer/Scanner/Copier is transferring data to the computer. This has the greatest speed impact on scanning and copying. Bi-directional (better) ============== The bi-directional interface configuration may slightly improve the data transfer rate on some computers. The electrical characteristics of the port in this configuration are better suited to bi-directional operation than the Centronics (SPP) configuration. Extended Capabilities Port (recommended) ========================== The Extended Capabilities Port (ECP) is a particular type of bi-directional interface established by the IEEE-1284 standard. If your computer has ECP capability, scanning will be faster than using an SPP bi-directional interface. Scanning speed depends also on several other factors such as whether your computer is a Pentium or 486, the amount of RAM installed in your computer, hard disk space, etc. An ECP port will give a greater speed improvement on slower processors. This improvement can be 1-4 times faster (for a 468 processor) than non-ecp (enhanced) ports. Using the IEEE-1284 parallel cable ================================== In order for the bi-directional interface of your HP Printer/ Scanner/Copier to work properly, you must use an IEEE-1284 cable. The cable that was shipped with your device is an IEEE-1284 cable. If you need to replace your cable, you must get one that has "IEEE-1284-1994 compliant" stamped on it and the cable must not be longer than 3 meters. Important: If, after reading the rest of this document, you are not comfortable following these directions, call HP Support for assistance. The HP Support phone numbers are located in your HP Printer/Scanner/Copier Series 300 User's Guide. Turning on bi-directional or ECP ================================ To check the computer itself for bi-directional and/or ECP mode, you must check the system configuration, also known as BIOS, CMOS, or hardware configuration. There are instructions later in this document which may help you to check this and change the setting. You can also check your computer documentation or contact your computer manufacturer for assistance. NOTE: If there is a choice between DMA1 or DMA3 during configuration, select DMA3 since it is less likely to conflict with other devices. Buying an ECP card ================== You can buy a card to install in your computer to add an additional parallel port. If you plan to do much scanning and your computer doesn't have ECP mode or if you need to attach more than one parallel product, we recommend that you purchase a parallel port I/O card to add an ECP port to your computer. Hewlett-Packard suggests the following cards. Suggested cards: Important: I/O is an intricate subject and some cards won't work with some computers. When you buy a card, make sure you can return it if it doesn't work with your system. +SIIG IO-1809 [but not the IO-1818] High Speed I/O, I/O Professional (includes 2 extra serial ports) +Promise Tech Pro Accessing Your Computer's Setup Information =========================================== To change the bi-directional or ECP setting of your parallel port, you must access your computer's setup information. Depending on the computer manufacturer, the information may be located under something called Setup, Configuration, CMOS, or BIOS. Common methods of getting into the Setup are: +Pressing a key such as F1, F2 or Delete at a particular point in the startup process. +Restarting your computer using a special set of keys such as Ctrl-Alt-Esc. +Having a special startup diskette that puts you into the Setup. Once you get into the Setup program, you should be able to locate a section for your parallel port and use keys such as left/right arrow or F7/F8 to change settings. If you cannot get into your computer's configuration utility or need assistance changing your settings, contact your computer manufacturer for assistance. Getting into the BIOS/CMOS ========================== The information in this section was obtained from public web sites in January 1998. It is provided for information only. Getting a BIOS upgrade from your manufacturer ============================================= If your computer has an ECP mode that is turned on and you are still having problems getting ECP recognized, your computer may need a BIOS upgrade. Check with your computer manufacturer. For example, the HP Vectra XU 5/90 may require a BIOS upgrade for its ECP mode to work properly with the HP Printer/Scanner/ Copier. The BIOS upgrade for the HP Vectra XU 5/90 can be downloaded from HP's web site at www.hp.com. ***************************************************************** C. Printing Application Notes ============================= At the time the HP Printer/Scanner/Copier Series 300 printer driver was released, the following software application limitations existed: When a print job is cancelled from the Windows spooler, the HP Printer/Scanner/Copier will continue to print the current page. All remaining pages will be cancelled. If you press STOP from HP Printer/Scanner/Copier keypad to cancel printing there will be a slight pause before printing is stopped. Windows Application Notes ========================== The HP Printer/Scanner/Copier Series 300 printer driver stops printing and displays the message: "Error writing to LPT1" when processing a line of print that extends far beyond the printable region width. If your application displays this error when trying to print, check the document width by scrolling to the right and reduce the width if possible. MICROSOFT EXCEL 7.0 Some fill patterns and bitmaps may not print correctly. WINDOWS 3.1 PAINTBRUSH (Microsoft) The page is automatically ejected without printing or garbage is printed on the page when using the following video drivers: S3 Trio 1.66.02 800x600 32 CLF video driver, Video-57P 1024x768-65KC, GD5434 V1.24 1024x768x256 SmlFt, S3 Trio 64/32 1.42b22 800x600 256 SF. Changing to the Windows VGA video driver will resolve this problem. Note: Write down the name of your current video driver before you change it. To change the video driver in Windows 95 go to the Control Panel, select Display icon, click on the Settings tab, click on Change Display type, click on Change under the Adapter type section, click on show all devices, select Standard display types, Standard display adapter (VGA) from the list (found at the top of the list). To change the video driver in Windows 3.1 go to Windows Setup in your Main program group. Select the Options menu and choose Change system settings. Select VGA from the Display drop down list. ***************************************************************** D. Scanning and Viewing Images ============================== The HP Printer/Scanner/Copier series 300 scanning software uses the TWAIN standard to scan directly into an application, allowing you to add images directly into an open document. When scanning a document in grayscale, each page will require 8 mbytes of memory. A color image may require up to 24 mbytes of memory. Your application may copy the page many times requiring a large amount of memory. Make sure that you are not running other programs at the same time to free up memory. Color and grayscale scanning is limited to a single page. If you want to scan a multi-page document in color or grayscale, you must scan each page separately. Multi-page documents can be scanned and saved in black and white, bi-level (text setting). The HP Printer/Scanner/Copier scanner always scans across the entire width of the scanner. If you print an image without cropping, the image will not fit within the printer's printable area. The HP Printer/Scanner/Copier print driver will not print to the outer edges of the paper. Space is provided for margins. For this reason, the viewer software automatically reduces your image to fit within the printable region. If you crop the image (and reduce the page width) before printing, your image will not be automatically reduced. If you are experiencing problems with the Create button, verify that you have installed the Adobe Photo Deluxe software shipped with the HP Printer/Scanner/Copier. Other versions of Photo Deluxe will not function correctly with the Create button. The COPY TO function only works with application programs that accept bitmap images. If you need to transfer an image to an application that does not support bitmap images, save the image to a file (in a compatible format) and then open or import the file. Scanning Application Notes ========================== At the time the HP Printer/Scanner/Copier Series 300 software was released, the following scanning software application limitations existed: COREL PRINTHOUSE 1.1 Stopping a scan in progress will cause Corel PrintHouse 1.1 to hang. Do not stop a scan in progress, wait for the entire document to be scanned. Grayscale scans in Corel Printhouse 1.1 fail if the scan resolution is set to 300x300 DPI or 600x600 DPI. Scans at 200x200 and 150x150 DPI settings are processed without any problems. ADOBE PHOTOSHOP and PHOTODELUXE (Windows 3.1) Cannot scan into Adobe Windows 3.1 applications using TWAIN. Documents must be saved by the HP Printer/Scanner/Copier image viewer software and then opened as a file in Adobe Windows 3.1 applications. ***************************************************************** E. Incompatible Print Manager error message =========================================== If an HP LaserJet 4 printer driver is installed after the HP Printer/Scanner/Copier Series 300 is installed, an "Incompatible Print Manager" error message will appear. The HP Printer/Scanner/Copier Series 300 software must be reinstalled. ***************************************************************** G.
