The WhiteHEAT USB brings a revolution in multi-port serial communications to USB bus compatible computers. The Connect Tech WhiteHEAT USB features compatibility with standard 16550 multi-port serial ports. The WhiteHEAT USB is a USB compliant Plug and Play multi-port serial converter. The WhiteHEAT USB utilizes the 16C654 UART, supporting 50 - 115200, 230400 and 460800 baud. The 16C654 UART supports hardware (RTS/CTS) and software (XON/XOFF) flow control. With this, PPP and ZMODEM transfers can be achieved at extremely high speeds. 2.0) USING THE WhiteHEAT USB ======================= 2.1) Driver Install -------------- In order to install the WhiteHEAT USB driver under Windows XP please follow the next 6 steps: Note: If you have downloaded the drivers from the Connect Tech Inc. web site, please unzip them into a temporary directory before proceeding (please take note of the directory for future reference). During the install click "Continue Anyway" on any warning messages that appear pertaining to the driver not being signed. If you do not, the installation will be aborted and the WhiteHEAT USB communications ports will be unavailable for use. 1. Connect the WhiteHEAT USB to the PC via the supplied USB cable (or a compatible equivalent). 2. After the USB cable is connected Windows will display the "Found New Hardware Wizard". If you are installing the drivers from the Windows driver diskette: - Choose the "Install the software automatically" option. - Insert the diskette. - Click "Next". - Skip to step 4. If you are installing the drivers from a downloaded zip file: - Choose the "Install from a list or specific location" option. - Click "Next". 3. If you are installing the drivers from the Windows driver diskette please skip to step 4. a) Select the "Search for the best driver in these locations" option. b) Uncheck the "Search removable media" checkbox. c) Check the "Include this location in the search" checkbox. d) Enter the path to the temporary directory that you unzipped the drivers to (or use the "Browse" button to locate it). e) Click "Next". 4. The wizard should find the drivers and say that it is installing the software for the "WhiteHEAT USB (Firmware Loader)". Please wait until it is complete. During this time you should see the WhiteHEAT USB LED lights come on (if they were not already) and then go off. 5. When the wizard has finished installing the software click "Finish". 6. If the "Found New Hardware Wizard" appears again goto step 2 and follow the steps again. It is possible that the wizard will appear 5 more times for the following reasons: - After the firmware has been loaded. During this install it is installing the software for the "WhiteHEAT USB" - Once for each on the communications ports (4 of them). During this install it is installing the software for "Port X", where X = 1 to 4. Each of these installs should cause the corresponding port's LED light to blink briefly. After installation is complete you can examine the WhiteHEAT USB communications ports by going to Start -> Control Panel -> System - > Hardware -> Device Manager -> Ports. Your WhiteHEAT USB communications ports will appear as "WhiteHEAT USB (XXXXXX) Port Y (COMZ)", where XXXXXX is the serial number on the bottom of your WhiteHEAT USB box, Y is the port number on the WhiteHEAT USB box, and Z is the assigned communications port number (in order to change this assignment see section 2.4 - Advanced WhiteHEAT USB Settings). 2.2) Updating the Driver ------------------- In order to update the WhiteHEAT USB driver under Windows XP please follow the next 2 steps: Note: If you have downloaded the drivers from the Connect Tech Inc. web site, please unzip them into a temporary directory before proceeding (please take note of the directory for future reference). During the update click "Continue Anyway" on any warning messages that appear pertaining to the driver not being signed. If you do not, the driver update will be aborted and the new driver will not be installed. 1. Open Device Manager by going to Start -> Control Panel -> System - > Hardware -> Device Manager. From Device Manager expand the "Multi-port serial adapters" node. Select the WhiteHEAT USB device that you wish to update and then from the "Action" menu, choose "Update Driver..." 2. The "Hardware Update Wizard" appears and behaves just like the "Found New Hardware Wizard". Follow the steps just like in section 2.1 - Driver Install to install the new driver. 2.3) Interpreting the Status LED Lights ---------------------------------- If the WhiteHEAT USB is connected to a USB port on a PC which is currently running, the LED labelled as "USB" will periodically blink, resembling a heart beat, confirming the connection of the WhiteHEAT USB to the USB port. If this LED is not blinking and the WhiteHEAT USB IS connected to the PC then the driver is not running properly. When a communication device is connected to a WhiteHEAT USB port, the corresponding LED for that port number will be lit solid indicating a connection has been made from the WhiteHEAT USB port to the communication device. When data is flowing through a WhiteHEAT USB port, the corresponding LED for that WhiteHEAT USB port and the "USB" LED will blink indicating there is data traffic on that port. 2.4) Advanced WhiteHEAT USB Settings ------------------------------- Each WhiteHEAT USB communications port has various advanced settings that can be modified. To access these settings open Device Manager (Start -> Control Panel -> System - > Hardware -> Device Manager) and expand the "Ports" node. Select the WhiteHEAT USB communications port that you wish to view the settings for and then select "Properties" from the "Action" menu. The properties dialog box should appear for the port, select the tab labelled "WhiteHEAT Port Settings". Here you can change the default port settings (baud, data bits, stop buts, etc.). To view/modify the advanced settings click on the "Advanced..." button. From here you can change the assigned COM number as well as give the port a descriptive text value. This value can be anything you wish but will be truncated to 20 characters. The value of this text field will appear in device manager beside the corresponding communications port. Baud rate mapping is not currently supported in the advanced properties but is intended as a future feature. After making changes to the assigned COM number or the description click "OK" to save them. These changes may not appear in Device Manager until you close and re-open Device Manager, however the changes are in place as soon as "OK" is pressed. 2.5) Uninstalling the Driver ----------------------- To uninstall the WhiteHEAT USB driver do the following: 1. Open Device Manager (Start -> Control Panel -> System - > Hardware -> Device Manager) and expand the "Multi-port serial adapters" node. 2. Select the WhiteHEAT USB you wish to uninstall. 3. From the "Action" menu choose "Uninstall" and click "OK" when prompted for confirmation. Note: The communications ports associated with the uninstalled WhiteHEAT USB will also me uninstalled. 3.0) KNOWN ISSUES, BUG FIXES ======================= Feb 04, 2011 driver version: 3.7.5.4 64 bit OS support added.
