The utility is in "20020517" > "Driver_PCL6" > "PatchPnP" of this installation package. If wishing to have more information about this, please see the above directory. Installation ============= The utility is supplied in a self-extracting archive INSTPNP.EXE. (1) Run this archive, and click on the OK button when a disclaimer document is displayed. (2) Input the path to the location where the utility is installed when a prompt for that is displayed. (3) A confirmatory message box should appear after successful extraction of the files. (2) Push the button marked 'Patch' to mark the relevant registry entries. (3) After a short pause, all of the entries should disappear and the 'Patch' button will be disabled. (4) Press 'Exit' to finish. (5) Reboot the system to check that there are no more false Plug- and-Play messages. 4. Notes for Watermarks ======================= The driver provides a wide input range in defining a watermark size, length & position. Such flexible user input enables a watermark to be created as small as to print on a Postcard or as large as to print on an A3 paper. However, an extremely large watermark may not be printed successfully on a relatively small paper in size. It is the user's responsibility to define an appropriate watermark for printing it on the selected paper type. The Watermark Preview is close to the printed result but it may not exactly match. A watermark may not be printed correctly for these cases: (1) Depending on the selected (bolded) font type, a watermark with long text length and/or huge text size may hit the maximum working memory limit. As a result, the actual output may differ from the desired output. (2) Due to the technical limitation of Raster printing mode, a watermark cannot be printed in background of a document. (3) A watermark may be clipped by the printable area if it is printed across the printable margins. The Watermark Preview Window does not reflect the printable area of the selected paper size. 5. General Comments =================== (1) It is recommended that you restart the Windows system after completion of driver installation in order for the driver to work properly. (2) It is also strongly recommended that you restart the Windows system after completion of driver uninstallation. This is to ensure a completely clean system especially if you are to perform re-installation of driver. (3) If you encounter problem in setting up the driver by SETUP.EXE, you may use the Windows Add Printer Wizard to install the driver. (4) Some applications provide printing options pertaining to the number of copies and collating copies. Always select the printing options in the application unless the instructions specify otherwise. Use the printer driver dialogs to select advanced options such as duplex (2-sided) printing, or options that are not available in the application. (5) Always close the printer driver dialogs and/or the application Print dialog before you make any changes to the default settings of the printer driver via the Control Panel. (6) Not all graphics and images can be printed using the "Vector" graphics setting. If you use the "Vector" setting and your graphic images do not print the same way they appear on your screen, select the "Raster" graphics setting and reprint your graphic. (7) If you expect the printed texts to be "what you see is what you get", deselect the "Use Printer's TrueType Fonts" option. (8) Select and deselect the "Use Printer's TrueType Fonts" option in driver will affect the layout of your print job. Use of Printer's TrueType Fonts will result in smaller size in texts, tables and graphic images printed. Do not select "Use Printer's TrueType Fonts" option if you are expecting images from the application are printed in their actual sizes. (9) The driver's Overlay function is enabled for users who are assigned with the Administrators / Power Users right. (10) When using Scaled booklet with document of mixed orientations, the output will be printed in Portrait. (11) Using large percentage for Scale Factor together with large paper size, "Scaling" printing may not be possible. (12) When user specifies a custom paper size within 1.6mm from the standard paper size, it's size will be mapped to the nearest standard paper size other than Postcard and Folio paper sizes. (13) When "Pages Per Split" is selected for Booklet Creation, additional blank sheets may be printed. (14) If a user does not specify a job owner name for a print job, the printer will use the user's logon name to generate the Print Volume Report. However, if a user's logon name contains a double quotation mark (") that cannot be recognized by the printer, "Unknown User" will be assumed. 6. Limitations ============== (1) The printed output quality of some pattern-on-colour shaded graphic images may not be well handled. You may choose a different graphic colour/pattern to resemble the desired printout. (2) Colour texts are always printed in Black in most applications when Raster mode is selected. Workaround: Select "Vector" mode to print the job. (3) In Vector printing mode, selecting "All Texts to Black" control may not apply to some texts that are greater than 70 points. Texts with large font size may be printed as graphics and hence its 'black' attribute is lost. Applications that were tested to have this problem are: Microsoft PowerPoint 97 WordPro 97 Workaround: Select "Raster" mode to print the job. (4) Some applications draw graphic images on the page before the text is drawn in "Raster" mode. As a result, the graphics may be covered by the opaque background of the text and hence, these covered images may not be printed physically. Applications that were tested to have this problem are: Microsoft WordPad Microsoft Excel 97 Workaround: Select "Vector" mode to print the job. (5) Outline texts must be printed using downloaded fonts. "Use Printer's TrueType Fonts" option must be unchecked to print texts as outline because device (PCL) fonts do not support Outline attribute. (6) The texts in the Data Label of Microsoft Excel 97 may have their font background each font printed as white in Raster mode. Workaround: Select "Vector" mode to print the job. (7) The colour lines in the chart of Microsoft Excel 97 may be printed as black in Raster mode. Workaround: Select "Vector" mode to print the job. (8) You may get unexpected stapled position if the Staple function is applied to the following print jobs: > documents that have page orientation different to that of the driver default orientation. > N-Up printing of documents that have page size different to that of the driver default paper size. (9) The watermark should not be used for creating an overlay. Otherwise, unexpected result may occur. (10) The driver does not support printing from the Client of the Windows NT4.0 Terminal Server. (11) If "Download as Bit Image" is used together with "As Outline Only" for the watermarks, the watermarks may not be printed as outline fonts. Workaround: Select "Download as TrueType" for the TrueType mode. 7. Known Problems ================= (1) The N-Up function is not recommended for printing a document that has both Portrait and Landscape pages. Depending on the page arrangement of a document, the logical page order from one physical page to another may be changed. For example, if a document has different orientation on its first page and third page, the 2-Up printing will output the third and fourth pages on the second physical page with swapped order as compared to the first and second pages on the first physical page. (2) The "Device" Halftoning mode does not work well with some applications. When the print function fails, the "PCL XL error" page will be generated if the Error Report is requested in the driver's "Printer" tab. Applications that were tested to have this problem are: Adobe PageMaker 6.5C CorelDraw 7 Workaround: Select "System" Halftoning mode to print the job.
