                    INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
                MYLEX DAC960 PROTECTED MODE DRIVER
                     FOR MICROSOFT WINDOWS 95

1. Create a Dac960 DOS system with a minimum of a 500mb 16 bit FAT boot partition. It is not
necessary to use a memory manager such as himen.sys/emm386.exe or other third party
products because win95 will install himem.sys by default. However you may use a memory
     manager if you wish.

2. Non-disk peripherals such as tape and CD-ROM drives must be on channel 0 of multi-channel
controllers. Also, SCSI id's should be unique across all channels and all adapters. These
restrictions are due to an undocumented bug in the Windows 95 device enumeration process.

3. Install the Dac960 drivers dacdrv.sys, aspidac.sys and dafcda.sys in your config.sys. Note
that dacdrvr.sys must be installed before any memory manager and that aspidac.sys and
dafcda.sys should be loaded in conventional memory.

4. Install mscdex.exe in your autoexec.bat.

5. Create an installation disk and copy the files in this kit to that disk. As a minimum you will
     need Dac960nt.mpd, Dac960nt.inf and ScsiPupd.exe.

6. Note that aspidac.sys, dafcda.sys and mscdex.exe are required to provide CD-ROM services
via the Dac960 for installation of windows 95 and in later 'MS-DOS Mode' sessions. If you
are using a CD-ROM drive attached to another controller these drivers are not required.
However dacdrvr.sys must be installed to enable windows 95 to load the protected mode driver
via controllers with firmware earlier than v3.0.

7. From the DOS command prompt run setup.exe from the Windows 95 installation CD-ROM.
This will process should proceed as with any standard system. Once the installation is
complete and stable the protected mode driver may be installed by as outlined below. By this
time you may have been warned that your system is operating in 'ms-dos compatability mode'.
     This can safely be ignored.

8. Place the installation disk made above into a floppy drive. From the Start menu select 'Run'
and type in a:\scsipupd.exe. This will install the updated ScsiPort dirver.

9. Right click on the 'My Computer' icon and then select the properties item on the menu. Open
the Driver tab and then click the "+" by Other Devices to expand that tree. Here you should
find a unknown EISA or PCI card depending on the model of your controller. Highlight that
entry and then left click the properties button below.

10. Open the Driver tab in the properties sheet and then left click the Change Driver button.
Select Scsi Adapters from the list of device types and then left click the 'Have Disk' button.
At this point a list box listing the Dac960 EISA and PCI controllers should appear. Select the
approptriate one and proceed with the 'OK's' until the process completes. When you are asked
     to restart your computer agree.

11. At this point Windows 95 should have copied the driver to the windows\system\iosubsys
directory, copied dac960nt.inf to the windows\inf directory as oem?.inf, updated ios.ini by
placing the real mode drivers at the bottom of the safe list and set up the registry for the
     Dac960.

12. As Windows 95 starts after this reboot it begin to find 'unknown' devices and ask you if you
wish to install a driver for them. In each case you should select the option that says 'Do not
install driver - Windows will not ask you again'. One of these devices will be the Mylex
GAM device- for which there is no Windows 95 driver. Also, because there is no Tape 'class'
in windows 95 as it ships, any tape drives will initially be seen as unknown devices. Tape
backup software from Seagate and Hewlett Packard will create a tape class when installed.

13. At this point the installation is complete. You may verify this by checking the Performance tab
in System Properties. It should state that your system is configured for optimum performance.

14. If at any time during the installation you decide to abort and start over there is one very
important step that must be taken: Delete the oem?.inf file form the windows\inf directory.
Otherwise you will end up with multiple copies of that file and create havoc in your registry.

15. If at any time you wish to install an update to dac960nt.mpd from an updated dac960nt.sys
from Mylex it is only necessary to change the extension on the new file and copy it to the
     windows\system\iosubsys directory.
