8. Frequently Asked Questions:
------------------------------
Q: What causes the USB printing problems in Ubuntu 6.06 LTS?
A: These are CUPS printing issues, you need to upgrade using the following steps:
        NOTE: You need root permission.
        1. Upgrade CUPS to version 1.2.2 or higher
              #apt-get install cupsys
        2. Add cupsys to shadow group.
              #adduser cupsys shadow
        3. Restart CUPS.
              #/etc/init.d/cupsys restart

Q: Why I can't display the Simplified Chinese in the CUPS web services(http://localhost:631)?
A: In order to properly display Simplified Chinese characters in the CUPS web services site, you need
to upgrade CUPS to version 1.3. These are the steps:
        1. Go to http://www.cups.org and download CUPS 1.3.0 source code.
        2. To compile CUPS, you will need to install gcc, g++, and make. You can use synaptic package manager to do this.
        3. In Terminal, untar the downloaded CUPS source code. Change into the unpacked CUPS source directory.
        4. To compile, use the following command:
                # ./configure && make
        5. To install, change to the root user and:
                # make install
        * Note: Firefox needs additional packages for Simplified Chinese support (download and install those
           packages in the same manner)

Q: How to upgrade Ubuntu 8.04/7.10/6.06 OS in order to support Simplified Chinese language?
A: These are the steps in updating for Simplified Chinese language support:
        1. Launch Synaptic Package Manager.
        2. Configure online repositories.
        3. Click Reload button (network settings had been configured for internet access).
        4. Click Search button, type in "language-support-zh" (metapackage for Chinese Language support)
        5. Right-click to that package and select "Mark for Installation" option.
        6. "Mark Additional required changes?" dialog will prompt to confirm the installation of other packages
dependent to the selected one. Click "Mark" to confirm.
        7. Click "Apply" button to start downloading and installing packages.
        8. After installing all packages, then restart the PC.
        9. Then select "Options" then select Languages [Chinese mainland].

  Q. In Ubuntu, why is the default media size set to A4 after creating a print queue in CUPS?
  A. The default media size setting in Ubuntu is determined by the /etc/papersize configuration file.
This is set to A4 by default. Change this to Letter to make it the default media size everytime a printer
     queue is created.

  Q. Why is it when scanning with larger resolution takes too long finish?
  A. The resulting scan image is very big. The recommended memory requirement for scanning is at least
512MB of RAM and 1GB of swap.

  Q. Why is it when printing a very large image with higher resolution in GIMP/ImageViewer in Ubuntu 8.04,
sometimes my print job ends immediately without print output?
  A. This is an application limitation. Using GIMP/ImageViewer in such resolution requires adequate memory (RAM).
