Dell™ Notebook System Software
December 2003

Notebook System Software (NSS) is a utility that provides critical updates and patches for your operating system. Install the NSS program to gain support for Dell 3.5-inch USB floppy drives, Intel® Pentium®-M processors, CD-ROM/CD-RW/DVD drives, Infrared (IR) communications, and USB devices. NSS is necessary for correct operation of your Dell portable computer, including the Dell D/Bay, D/Dock, D/Port, and D/View family of docking devices. NSS automatically detects your computer and operating system and installs the updates appropriate for your configuration.

Silent Install Option

NSS is an InstallShield 6.31 program and has the ability to be "silently" installed through the "-S" switch. NSS includes an .ISS file in the distribution package for customers who wish to perform silent installs. Example: "SETUP.EXE -S."


Enabling ClearType (Microsoft® Windows® XP only)

ClearType is a Windows XP font technology that increases the crispness of text and images on display panels. ClearType technology uses proprietary signal processing and the properties of display panels to increase readability by producing clear, detailed characters and spacing. However, the results can be subjective: While some believe ClearType is an improvement, others believe it makes the display panel appear blurry. NSS gives customers the ability to automatically turn on ClearType with a special command-line argument: “CTYPE.”  Example: "SETUP.EXE CTYPE." The addition of "CTYPE" signals NSS to turn on ClearType in Windows XP. If "CTYPE" is not present in the command line, ClearType will be left at its default value, which is "off."


Manually Bypassing Features

NOTICE: Dell does not recommend bypassing features. Each feature installed by NSS is meant to avert critical performance and stability issues found during extensive testing of your Dell computer. Overriding the features installed by NSS may leave critical performance or stability issues exposed on your computer.

Each NSS feature can be turned off by a unique feature bypass command-line argument. Example: "SETUP USB."
By running NSS with this command line, the program installs as usual except that it will bypass installing USB support.  Note that feature bypass command-line arguments can be grouped, for example: "SETUP -S USB IDA." This command line bypasses the installation of both USB support and Infrared support and performs a silent installation. The various NSS features are documented in the accompanying Features Matrix, along with their corresponding feature bypass command-line arguments (requires Microsoft Excel to view).
