1. Hardware Requirements

You must have a modem or network interface card (NIC) installed on
your notebook.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
2. Software Requirements

Mobile Configuration Manager can be installed on computers running
Windows NT 4.0, Windows 98, and Windows 95.

Windows NT 4.0:
- Service Pack 3 or later. You can download Windows NT
  4.0 Service Pack 4 from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads].

- Dial-Up Networking. This is included with the Windows NT 4.0
installation disks, but must be installed manually. If it is not
installed, Mobile Configuration Manager will not have modem support.
To see if Dial-Up Networking is installed, click Start>Programs>
Accessories>Dial-Up Networking. If it is not installed, a dialog box
appears asking if you want to install Dial-Up Networking. If it is
installed, a list of all your Dial-Up Networking profiles appears.
You must have a modem installed before you can install Dial-Up
  Networking.

Windows 98:
No additional system components are required.

Windows 95:
You must install the following additional Microsoft system components:
- TAPI 2.1 or greater
- DUN 1.2 or greater
- DCOM

These components are located on the Installation CD, or are available
from Microsoft.

Under Windows 95 or 98, the "File and printer sharing for Microsoft
Networks" service must be installed to enable or disable file or
printer sharing. MCM checks for this service only when a Configuration
is activated. If the service is not available, a message is displayed
but you can still establish the connection. Refer to your Microsoft
documentation on how to install this service.

Before MCM can perform LAN operations, TCP/IP must be configured on
your PC card. Refer to your Microsoft documentation on how to
install and configure TCP/IP.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
3. Uninstalling DCOM, TAPI, or Dial-Up Networking (DUN)

Any DCOM, TAPI, or Dial-Up Networking required to install
DynamicAccess mobile connection manager are not uninstalled by the
"Uninstall DynamicAccess mobile connection manager" program. Each
of these upgrades must be uninstalled separately.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
4. Downloading DynamicAccess Mobile Connection Manager Files Using
   Internet Explorer 3.0

If you are downloading the DynamicAccess mobile connection manager
files using Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0, you may see the message:
"Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet site ..."
     "The handle is invalid"

This problem can be overcome by refreshing the page before every file
download.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
5. Using Mobile Configuration Manager with DynamicAccess 1.5

If you are running Mobile Configuration Manager with 3Com's
DynamicAccess software, all NICs on your computer must use
DynamicAccess to be recognized by Mobile Configuration Manager.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
6. Mobile Configuration Manager Export Files

Do not modify the contents of export files created using Mobile
Configuration Manager. These files have an .MCM extension. If you
want to make changes to Configurations or Profiles contained in an
export file, import the Configuration(s) and Profile(s) into MCM,
edit them and export them again.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
7. Changing Telephony Settings in Windows

Do not modify or delete telephony entries using Windows
(Control Panel>Modems>Dialing Properties). Profiles using this
information in Mobile Configuration Manager can become corrupted.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
8. Running MCM With a Modem but Without a NIC

If no NIC is installed on your notebook, all LAN configuration
operations are disabled.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
9. Running MCM With a Network Card but Without a Modem

If no modem is installed on your notebook, all Dial-Up configuration
operations are disabled.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
10. Default Profiles

The first time MCM is started on your computer, it creates a default
LAN profile for every NIC installed on your computer. Each default
LAN profile contains information about TCP/IP settings, DNS, WINS,
etc. MCM also creates a default General Access profile that stores
information about your default printer, file and printer sharing
settings, and proxy servers for Internet Explorer.

Dialing and Dial-Up Networking profiles contain information specific
to a particular location or a particular connection, so the concept
of having a default profile does not arise.

NOTE:
Do not delete or modify these default profiles, but save them in a
backup file (see item 12 below).

---------------------------------------------------------------------
11. Restoring Your Initial Network Settings

To restore your LAN configuration settings to what they were before
starting MCM, create a configuration containing the default LAN
profile and the default General Access profile, then activate the
configuration.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
12. Backing Up and Restoring MCM Configurations and Profiles

To create a backup copy of Configurations and/or Profiles, use the
Export (File->Export) option in MCM to export the Configurations and
Profiles to a file. This export file will be given an .MCM
extension. Restore the Configurations and Profiles by using the
Import (File->Import) option in MCM.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
13. Rebooting Your Computer When Activating Configurations

LAN configurations:
MCM displays a message when activating a LAN configuration if you
need to reboot your computer. After the reboot, you are connected to
the network with your new LAN settings. If no reboot is needed, the
LAN settings will be active.

Dial-Up Configurations:
In Windows 95 and 98, MCM displays a message indicating that a reboot
is required only if the File and Printer Sharing settings are changed
by activating the Configuration.

After rebooting the computer, start MCM and activate the Dial-Up
Configuration to establish the connection.

You can also choose not to reboot. When you activate the Dial-Up
Configuration again without rebooting, the new File and Printer
Sharing settings will not work.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
14. Dialing String is Inaccurate and "Dialing From" Box is Grayed
Out on the "Connect To" Screen

Check the "Use area code and dialing properties" box on the Phone
Number tab for the dial-up networking profile you are using in the
current configuration.

This check box controls not only the area and country codes, but
also the use of the dialing profile associated with the
configuration.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
15. Reporting Errors to Customer Support

Every error, warning, or status message in MCM has a unique error
number, such as 140-00C-008 followed by the text of the message.
When reporting errors to Customer Support, please supply the error
number to help us resolve the problem more efficiently.

Whenever possible, export the configuration that was associated with
the problem to a file and e-mail it to Customer Support. For the
e-mail address, see the Customer Support Web site at www.3com.com.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
16. Running MCM With Telephony Applications

Do not run telephony applications at the same time MCM is running
or is being installed. Resource and/or data conflicts can occur.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
17. Creating LAN Configurations

When creating LAN Configurations, MCM does not display the current
NIC settings.

You can obtain these settings by copying and editing the default LAN
Profile for that NIC.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
18. Garbage Characters Appear in a Dialing String

In Windows 95 in a Dialing Profile, under the Area Code Rules...
button on the My Location tab, if you check "Always dial the
area code (10-digit dialing)," garbage characters may appear in the
phone number string when connecting with a Dial-Up Configuration.

To avoid this, always enter an area code under the Phone Number tab
in the associated Dial-Up Networking profile.

You may also experience this if the area code in the Phone Number
tab in the Dial-Up Networking Profile is the same as the area code
in the Dialing Profile My Location tab. To remedy this situation,
uncheck the "Always dial the area code (10-digit dialing)" box in
the Dialing Profile.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
19. Your NIC's IP setting is Bound on Top of IPX

NICs whose IP settings are bound on top of IPX are not recognized in
this release of MCM.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
20. Exporting Configurations or Profiles to a Floppy Disk

When you are exporting Configurations and Profiles to a floppy disk,
allow a few moments to pass while the copy is being done. If you
pull the floppy disk out of the machine too soon, the copy will be
incomplete and you will receive an error message.

To avoid incomplete imports and exports, we recommend that you export
Configurations or Profiles first to a file on your hard disk and
then copy the export file to a floppy. Similarly, copy the import
file to the hard disk and then import using the copied file.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
21. Error 140-009-007

"Error 140-009-007: An error occurred while writing to or
reading from your global modem in order to configure the modem for
the country you've selected in the Dialing Profile of this
Configuration. The country has not been changed."

You may get this error while connecting with a Dial-Up Configuration
that uses a dialing Profile with the "Configure my global modem to
work with the telephone system in this country" checkbox checked.

If you are running on a computer without a lot of memory or with a
slow processor speed, the error is probably not correct and the
country was actually configured correctly.

To determine whether your modem is configured for the country you
intended, run the WorldPort program that came with your modem.
