Please read this before you install. Please see Help for another contents or details of SmartDeviceMonitor for Client. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- (1) Features - SmartDeviceMonitor for Client enables you to monitor any printers in the Printers Folder with the taskbar. - SmartDeviceMonitor for Client enables you to monitor multiple printers at a time. - With SmartDeviceMonitor for Client, you can view the network settings on the printer and more specified information about the device. - SmartDeviceMonitor for Client enables you to print jobs directly from network without using any Print Server(s). - SmartDeviceMonitor for Client can notify you of printer errors. - SmartDeviceMonitor for Client can notify you of when your print job is transferred to printer or when the job is complete. - SmartDeviceMonitor for Client enables you to send print job(s) to other printer(s) when the specified printer is unable to print. <Recovery Printing> - SmartDeviceMonitor for Client enables you to divide the printing of multiple sets of a document between multiple networked printers to resultin faster production <Parallel Printing> Note 1: Parallel Printing and Recovery Printing are available only for the PCL6, PCL5e, PCL5c, RPCS or IPDL-C Drivers. Other drivers such as PS drivers do not support these functions. Note 2: First print speed may slow down when using any of the above functions. If you put more value on first print speed than these functions, you can turn off the Extended Features. - You can open the Preview and Print window when printing a file from its associated application. Note: It is available only when the printer driver being used supports the Preview and Print function. (2) Limitation of installation - The following products cannot be coexistence with SmartDeviceMonitor for Client. Any of them on your computer will be overridden when you install SmartDeviceMonitor for Client. - Aficio Manager for Client - LANIER Net Manager for Client - infotec NetPrint Manager for Client - Net Vision for Client - Multi Direct Print - PortNavi Please note that, however, if the version of the Aficio Manager for Client, LANIER Net Manager for Client, infotec NetPrint Manager for Client, or Net Vision for Client on your computer is 1.05 or lower, you must uninstall it before you install SmartDeviceMonitor for Client. Please be sure to delete "Printer information" when you uninstall it. - When installing SmartDeviceMonitor for Client from a network drive, please make sure that both client and server support long file name. If either one does not support long file name, you must make sure that the name of the directory of the source computer is in DOS 8.3 format; otherwise the installation may fail. Example: OK: F:\PRG\RMCLIENT\ DOS 8.3 format NG: F:\PROGRAMFILES\RMCLIENT\ non-DOS 8.3 format (Directory name is too long) * File/Directory name in DOS 8.3 format: 8 or fewer letters + period (.) + extension (3 or fewer letters) - Administrative privilege is required when installing SmartDeviceMonitor for Client on Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, or Windows Vista. - If Aficio Manager for Client, LANIER Net Manager for Client, infotec NetPrint Manager for Client, or Net Vision for Client is installed on your computer, please make sure that it is not running when you install SmartDeviceMonitor for Client. - If Multi Direct Print or PortNavi is installed on your computer, please make sure that any printing job is complete when you install SmartDeviceMonitor for Client. Please also note that you cannot install SmartDeviceMonitor for Client while you are adding or configuring port. - Exit SmartDeviceMonitor for Client before you upgrade SmartDeviceMonitor for Client. Also, please make sure that any printing job is complete and you are not adding or configuring port. - When updating SmartDeviceMonitor for Client: Log on as the same user as you have used for installation. or Uninstall any previous versions of SmartDeviceMonitor for Client before installing any newer versions. - Please do not specify the install folder into windows directory. If SmartDeviceMonitor for Admin is already installed, you are required to specify the different folder for SmartDeviceMonitor for Client. - When installation of this software is finished, depending on the OS you use, the complete message window may not appear in front. In this case, you can bring it to front by selecting the corresponding button on the taskbar. - SmartDeviceMonitor for Client will not work correctly after you upgrade the OS from Windows 95 / 98 /Me to Windows NT4.0/2000/XP. This is caused by the limitation of Windows NT4.0/2000/XP that SmartDeviceMonitor for Client will not be recognized when upgrading into Windows NT4.0/2000/XP. In this case, please uninstall SmartDeviceMonitor for Client using the "Add/Remove Programs Properties" of "Control Panel" before you upgrade the OS and then reinstall SmartDeviceMonitor for Client. - If any of the following is true, you have to reinstall SmartDeviceMonitor for Client on your computer: -- You have upgraded your computer from Windows 95/98/Me to Windows 2000/XP/Server 2003. -- You have upgraded your computer from Windows XP to Windows Vista. -- The current OS is either Windows 2000, Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 and you have converted the drive on which SmartDeviceMonitor for Client is installed from FAT to NTFS. - To install SmartDeviceMonitor for Client on a Windows 2000 Server/Server 2003 Family on which Terminal Services are running or a Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition,you must switch to Installation Mode. To install the application software in Installation Mode, try either of the following: 1. Install the application software through "Add/Remove Prorgams" in the Control Panel. 2. Before installation, enter the following command at the DOS prompt: CHANGE USER /INSTALL After instration, enter the following command at the DOS prompt: CHANGE USER /EXECUTE For more information, refer to Windows Help. - You cannot install DeskTopBinder on Windows XP, Windows Server 2003 or Windows Vista from a network drive in Windows95/98/Me. Before you install the software, copy the entire folder including the contents to a local drive of the PC on which you want to install it. - When you are asked to restart your computer at the end of the installation, do so. Please be sure to log in as Administrator after the reboot if your computer is running Windows NT4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003 or Windows Vista. - To install and use the product on Windows 95, Internet Explorer 5 or later is required. (3) Limitation of uninstallation - Administrative privilege is required when uninstalling SmartDeviceMonitor for Client from Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, or Windows Vista. - When you try to uninstall SmartDeviceMonitor for Client while you are adding or configuring port of SmartDeviceMonitor for Client, an error message will be displayed. Please make sure that you are not adding or configuring port before you uninstall this product. - Please be sure that printing has been completed when uninstalling SmartDeviceMonitor for Client. - Exit SmartDeviceMonitor for Client, before you uninstall. - Log on by the same user account as you used for installation when you uninstall SmartDeviceMonitor for Client. If you log on by different user account for installation, uninstallation may not be accomplished correctly. - When a dialog box that prompts you to restart your computer after you uninstall SmartDeviceMonitor for Client, please restart it. (4) Notice / Limitations on Monitoring - There is a possibility that your PC might cause trouble due to lack of performance when you desire to use to a printer under the following conditions: On a Windows NT4.0 PC that installed with NetWare Client module provided by Novell, the printer port (actually not connected to the printer) is set via NetWare settings. - There is a possibility that in some cases, devices would not respond information at all or do not respond information correctly through this utility. For example, in cases of a device having monitored by several PCs at a time. When this occurs, select [Options] from Device Properties window and set the [Timeout] more than 10 seconds. - If you are using a dialup network connection, please read this section carefully and take certain steps before you use this software so that you won't be charged extremely high communication cost. This software is designed to communicate with devices periodically. Depending on address of device you specify, connection may be always on. Please be sure to specify address that will not require dialup connection. Also, if you move the computer on which this software is installed and configured to the other network, depending on the devices you added, a dialup connection will be required. Either stop monitoring or deregister such devices. (5) Cautions When Adding/Setting Port - Depending on the version of Microsoft Internet Explorer and Windows operating system you are using, there is a possibility that your computer may hang when an SSL connection via IPP protocol is used for adding a port. To be more precise, when you specify an URL beginning with the scheme name "https" and then click the OK button, this problem may occur. Before you use an SSL connection via IPP protocol on Windows 98/Me/NT4.0, please make sure that the version of your Microsoft Internet Explorer is 6.0 or later, otherwise, upgrade to the latest version. - When you click the Port Settings button (Windows 95/98/Me) or the Configure Port button (Windows NT/2000/XP/Server2003/Vista), it may take a long time to display the Port Settings (Configure Port) dialog box if the device does not respond (because of the power off, etc.). Please wait for a while, or turn on the power of the device if it is off - If you want to enter a hostname to specify the address of a device when adding a port, the hostname of the target device must be defined in the hosts file, or registered in the DNS server or the WINS server. Please consult your network administrator for the maximum length of the hostname. Please note that if the hostname is not specified correctly, SmartDeviceMonitor for Client cannot add a port or monitor the device. - If antivirus software is installed on the computer on which SmartDeviceMonitor for Client is installed, SmartDeviceMonitor for Client may not be able to detect devices, depending on the settings of the antivirus software. Please refer to the users manual of your antivirus software for more details. - While Windows Internet Connection Firewall is set to on, searching devices or getting device information are unavailable. For information about Internet Connection Firewall, see Microsoft's web site. - If the OS of a client PC is Windows XP, you cannot perform the following operations on the printer port of SmartDeviceMonitor while the second or later login user's desktop is active. Log off all the login users except for the first login user before performing these operations: * [Add Port], [Delete Port], and [Configure Port] from printer's Properties dialog box * [Create a new port] via Add Printer Wizard (6) Notice / Limitations on Printing - The printer configuration of parallel printer/recovery printer must match with one of the original printer. If you specify a print job that requires printing option (such as duplex unit or finisher) and it is not attached to the recovery/parallel printer(s), those printers will execute printing but the procedure that requires such printing option will not be executed. Thus, you will receive unexpected result. - Load the same size of paper into each tray of the original printer and its recovery /parallel printer(s). - If you specify a particular tray to print, you must load the same size of paper as the original one into the recovery/parallel printer's tray which corresponds to the original tray you specified. Please also note that Recovery/Parallel Printing will not be initiated if you specify a particular tray with an RPCS driver. - When executing Parallel Printing, please make sure that the "Collate" check box is unchecked in the Print dialog box. - When Recovery /Parallel Printing is conducted, naturally, other printer(s) will be used. Thus, the printing job will not be recorded on the Job History of the original printer. - If your OS is either Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003 or Windows Vista, the Notification dialog box may not appear in front. You can bring it to front by selecting the corresponding button on the taskbar. - When IntranetWare Client is installed on your computer, the maximum length of port name will be restricted to 43 characters or less because of NetWare restriction. If the port name exceeds this maximum length, a NetWare DLL error will occur. - When you specify "sending to Job Binding" as "Job type", "Canceled" will be displayed in the "Status" column in the My Job List even though the print job is successfully ended. - Print server may not send Notification messages to its client PCs immediately after it starts up. - To get a notification when printing to a printer on a print server, please make sure that the following conditions are met: -- The name of the product installed on your computer must be the same as the one installed on the print server. If SmartDeviceMonitor for Client is installed on the server while SmartNetMonitor for Client is installed on your computer, for example, the print server cannot send a notification to your computer. -- The user account that is the same as your Windows login account must exist on the print server. -- The target printer on the print server must have been added to your computer by using the user account with which you are logged into your computer. - If the installation language of the print server PC and your client PC is different, we cannot guarantee that the notification function will work properly when printing via a print server. - You cannot receive a notification if you print a file to a print server as a local user of a client PC while the operating system on the print server is Windows XP and the Guest account is enabled on the server PC. - If the OS of a client PC is Windows XP, Recovery/Parallel Printing is available only for the first login user. If the second or later user's desktop is currently active, Recovery/Parallel Printing will not be initiated even though it meets the Recovery/Parallel Printing condition. Similarly, the Error Notification/Complete Notification will not be sent to the client. - On Windows XP/Vista computers, when the first logged user logged off, the user who logs into the computer after that will be the target of print notification, Recovery Printing, and Parallel Printing. - When you print a file to a device that is in an energy saving mode, there are cases where authentication information cannot be checked properly and therefore Recovery Printing may not work correctly. - If you want to send print notification to client computers in terminal server environment such as MetaFrame, you must configure your terminal server and each client computer properly as you do when you send print notification to client computers via a print server. (7) Notes on job handling - When User Code Authentication mode is set to on, you cannot work on any print jobs unless your user code is added to the device's Address Book and is specified in the printer properties of the printer driver. - To suspend or resume jobs, a hard disk must be installed in the target printer. (8) Item Description for SmartDeviceMonitor for Client - See the Help Topics for more information about each item of SmartDeviceMonitor for Client. (9) Requirements - Operating System - Windows 95/98: Pentium 133MHz or higher recommended - Windows Me: Pentium 150MHz or higher recommended - Windows NT4.0 (I386): Pentium 133MHz higher recommended * Service Pack 5 is required to send the Notification message to client PCs when printing through a network printer. - Windows 2000 (I386): Pentium 133MHz or higher recommended - Windows XP (I386) (*): Pentium 550MHz or higher recommended - Windows Server 2003: Pentium 550MHz or higher recommended - Windows Vista (I386) (*): Pentium 1GHz or higher recommended (*) Starter Edition is not supported. In addition to the above requirements, version 4.01 or later of Internet Explorer is required. To communicate with devices via SSL, version 5 or later of Internet Explorer is required. Note: Preview and Print is not available for Windows 95/98 or Windows NT4.0. - Network Environment [On monitoring] - TCP/IP must be installed. - IPX/SPX compatible protocol must be installed when using the IPX/SPX. When to use the IPX/SPX, Windows 95: one of the following is required: NetWare Network Client must be installed. Novell NetWare Client 32 must be installed. Novell IntranetWare Client for Windows 95 must be installed. Windows NT4.0 (I386): one of the following is required: Client Services for NetWare must be installed. Novell IntranetWare Client for Windows NT must be installed. Windows 98 and Me: one of the following is required: NetWare Network Client must be installed. IntranetWare Client for Windows 95 must be installed. Windows 2000: the following is required: Client Services for NetWare must be installed. (There is a possibility that this software might not work fully when Novell Client module is installed on Windows 2000.) [On printing] - TCP/IP or NetBEUI, which should be included with OS, is required. Note: In a wireless LAN environment, depending on the radio wave condition, printing may not work correctly. - Memory: 32 MB minimum or the one recommended by OS - Hard disk: 50 MB or more -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Microsoft and Windows are registered trademarks of Microsoft in the U.S. and other countries. After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.
Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).
If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.
Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.
Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.
Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.
From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.
Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.
Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
