A password is not required in failsafe mode. Security now user-level rather than share-level -- this fixes several issues resulting in users potentially gaining access to the wrong shares. Support for filenames in non-Western European alphabets has been added -- The Network Storage Server now supports PCs running Windows in Chinese, Cyrillic (Russian), Greek, Icelandic, Japanese, Korean Hangul and Eastern European languages. Disk checking progress now shown via web interface following unexpected loss of power to the Network Storage Server. The Network Storage Server can join an NT 4 Domain as a workstation, so that it can use the domain server to authenticate passwords. If you would like to know more about the configuration of the OfficeConnect Network Storage Server as part of an NT Domain, please refer to "NT white paper.pdf". ============================================================================ 3: Fixes for Known Faults ============================================================================ Bugs Fixed from Version 1: Problems accessing admin share and/or home directories from NT cured. Unexpected behaviour on creation of a share called ‘system’ now removed. DHCP client now registers hostname correctly with DHCP servers. Problems using Discovery application to find the Server over high-end switches (IGMP) now fixed due to better multicast support. ============================================================================ 4: Known Problems With This Release ============================================================================ In a Windows NT/2000 Domain Server setup, password authentication can now be done centrally via a Windows NT/2000 Domain Server. However, you cannot fully administer the shares and users from the Domain Server. You can only administer the user name and password on the Domain Server, any further share and user administration must still be done via the web interface of the OfficeConnect Network Storage Server. Netscape v6 does not render the Web interface correctly. This problem can be resolved by clicking on the refresh button when the problem occurs or by switching to a different browser or a different version of the Netscape browser. The OfficeConnect Network Storage Server does not support the release of a dynamically obtained IP address and care should be taken when moving a unit between two DHCP-enabled networks as the Server may fail to pick up a new address until either the lease expires or the Server is rebooted, whichever occurs first. It is recommended that multiple administrators do not simultaneously create shares, otherwise there is a slight risk that the same share could be processed simultaneously with unpredictable results. The OfficeConnect Network Storage Server does not support space characters in workgroup file names. Windows 2000 may report file sizes incorrectly. Files may appear to be much larger than they are when properties are viewed from Windows 2000. This bug has no effect on the actual space taken up by the file or the number of files the Server can store. The OfficeConnect Network Storage Server cannot hold files larger than 2Gb. The OfficeConnect Network Storage Server requires a password to be a minimum of one character, it cannot accept zero length passwords. It is recommended that users use the same password to access the Server as they do to log in to Windows, and that they therefore have a Windows password at least one character in length. ============================================================================ 5: Instructions for upgrading an OfficeConnect Network Storage Server ============================================================================ 1) Power down your Server by holding the shutdown button for 5 seconds, and waiting whilst the disk utilisation LEDs on the front panel move to the left and go out. 2) Remove power from the unit 3) Boot your Server in failsafe mode. This is done by connecting the power whilst holding the shutdown button in for approximately 5 seconds until the power LED turns from green to amber. Wait while the disk utilisation LEDs move across and go out. 4) Access the failsafe web interface by pointing your browser to http://XXXXX/failsafe.cgi where XXXXX is either the IP address of your server or the name which you normally use to access it on the network. 5) Choose the 'upgrade software' option 6) Select the 'browse' option 7) Set the 'Files of type' option to 'All Files (*.*)' then browse to the directory where you downloaded the upgrade. Select the ocnss200.bin file and then click 'Open' 8) Click the 'Upgrade' button to perform the upgrade. The screen will prompt you as required and your unit will be rebooted with the new software. --------------- IMPORTANT NOTE: --------------- If at any time you lose track of what the address of the Server is, the Discovery application on the Network Storage Server application CD can be used to find the Server on your network. The application will still be able to find the Server but will no longer be able to reconfigure the IP address or name. The new application will prompt for the administrator password unless in failsafe mode. If the password entered is incorrect the Server will not be reconfigured. ============================================================================ 6: World Wide Web Site ============================================================================ Access the latest networking information on the 3Com Corporation World Wide Web site by entering our URL into your Internet browser: http://www.3com.com/ ____________________________________________________________________________ (R) means registered trademark.
