Overview

This document describes the steps necessary to upgrade to BIOS version W7173AE7.10M for the MS-7173 motherboard.


Identification

This BIOS can be installed on a MS-7173 motherboard, part number 105587.


Installation

The BIOS should be flashed if:

1.  You are updating to a newer BIOS revision.

2.  A technician has told you to flash or re-flash the computer.


Steps to flash or re-flash the computer using a CD burner drive:

1.  Use your CD burning software to create a bootable CD.

 * Use Power2Go burning software and select Burn Disc Image to burn the C:\Cabs\MS7173BIOS\MS7173EM.iso file to a blank CD.
 * Use Nero burning software and select Burn Image to Disc to burn the C:\Cabs\MS7173BIOS\MS7173EM.nrg file to a blank CD.

2.  After creating the bootable CD, place the CD in the CD/DVD drive, and then restart the computer.

3.  At the Menu, select 1. for eMachines BIOS W7173AE7.10M.  The BIOS flash process runs automatically.  Do not press any keys or turn off the computer during this process.

4.  When the flash is complete, the computer automatically restarts.  

5.  Press the F2 key to enter the CMOS Setup Utility.

6.  In the CMOS Setup Utility, select Load Optimized Defaults, and then press ENTER.

7.  Press the Y key, and then press ENTER to select Load Optimized Defaults.

8.  In the CMOS Setup Utility, select Save & Exit Setup, and then press ENTER.

9.  Press Y, and then press ENTER to Save to CMOS and EXIT.

10. Remove the bootable CD from the CD/DVD drive.


Steps to flash or re-flash the computer using a floppy disk drive or bootable USB flash drive:

1.  Copy all of the BIOS files except MS7173EM.iso and MS7173EM.nrg from the C:\Cabs\MS7173BIOS folder to a blank floppy disk or a USB flash drive. 

2.  Restart the computer with the floppy disk/USB flash drive plugged in.

3.  At the Menu select 1. for eMachines BIOS W7173AE7.10M.  The BIOS flash process runs automatically.  Do not press any keys or turn off the computer during this process.

4.  When the flash is complete, the computer automatically restarts.  

5.  Press the F2 key to enter the CMOS Setup Utility.

6.  In the CMOS Setup Utility, select Load Optimized Defaults, and then press ENTER.

7.  Press the Y key, and then press ENTER to select Load Optimized Defaults.

8.  In the CMOS Setup Utility, select Save & Exit Setup, and then press ENTER.

9.  Press Y, and then press ENTER to Save to CMOS and EXIT.

10. Remove the floppy disk/USB flash drive.


Removal

Because a computer must have a BIOS to operate, there is no removal process.  The BIOS cannot be removed after it has been upgraded.


Troubleshooting

If you have trouble flashing the BIOS, try the process again following the steps listed in the Installation section of this document.  If you are still unable to flash the BIOS, verify that you are actually attempting to flash the BIOS on an MS-7173 motherboard.  If this process still fails, contact technical support.


Reason for Update

This BIOS improves fan control after the computer wakes from Standby mode.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.
