Overview

This document describes the steps necessary to update to BIOS version 4GC3112E for the ECS 945GCT-M3 Motherboard.

Identification

This BIOS can be installed on an ECS 945GCT-M3 Motherboard.

Installation

Update (flash) the BIOS if:

1. You are updating to a newer BIOS revision.

2. A technician has told you to flash or re-flash the computer.

Steps to flash or re-flash the computer using Winflash:

Note: This BIOS update runs in Windows using the WinFlash utility. Before starting this procedure, close or disable ALL programs. This includes active anti-virus scans and programs in the systray. Close programs in the systray by right-clicking, or alternate-clicking, each icon, and then if available, clicking Disable, Exit, or Close.

Because many programs can affect the way this flash is completed, it is critical that all programs are closed.

1. If you have not already done so, locate and double-click the 9539746.exe file that you originally downloaded from the Internet and execute the file. Files extract to the C:\Cabs\9539746 folder.

2. In the C:\Cabs\9539746\WinFlash folder, double-click Winplash.exe.

Note: If you already are running Windows Vista, you must right-click WinFlash.exe and then choose Run as administrator.

3. In the Phoenix WinFlash dialog box, verify that Backup BIOS and Flash BIOS with new setting are selected.

Note: If the location is already listed as C:\Cabs\9539746\4GC3112E.BIN, click Flash BIOS. Otherwise, skip to step 4.

4. In the Specify new BIOS file window, click Browse. Browse to C:\Cabs\9539746\4GC3112E.BIN, and then click Flash BIOS.

OR

5. Manually type in the location C:\Cabs\9539746\4GC3112E.BIN in the Specify new BIOS file field, and then click Flash BIOS.

6. In the Phoenix WinFlash dialog box, click OK.

7. The BIOS is flashed.

8. After the BIOS has completed, click Restart.

Steps to flash or re-flash the computer using a CD burner drive:

1. Use CDRW burning software to Burn Disc Image of the C:\Cabs\9539746\9539746.iso file to a blank CD.

2. After creating the bootable CD, place the CD in the CD/DVD drive, and then restart the computer.

3. At the Menu, select 1 for Gateway BIOS 4GC3112E. The BIOS flash process runs automatically. Do not press any keys or turn off the computer during this process.

4. When complete, the message "Flashing Complete" flashes. Remove boot media used and press the F1 key.

5. Press the F2 key to enter the BIOS Setup Utility.

6. In the BIOS Setup Utility, select Load Optimized Defaults, and then press the ENTER key.

7. Press the Y key, and then to select Load Optimized Defaults, press ENTER.

8. In the BIOS Setup Utility, select Save and Exit Setup, and then press ENTER.

9. Press Y, and then press ENTER to Save and EXIT.

Steps to flash or re-flash the computer using a floppy disk drive or bootable USB flash drive:

1. Copy all of the BIOS files from the C:\Cabs\9539746\ folder to a blank floppy disk or a USB flash drive. Do not copy the 9539746.iso file or WINFLASH folder.

2. Restart the computer with the floppy disk inserted or USB flash drive plugged in.

3. At the Menu, select 1 for Gateway BIOS 4GC3112E. The BIOS flash process runs automatically. Do not press any keys or turn off the computer during this process.

4. When the flash is complete, the computer automatically restarts.

5. Press the F2 key to enter the BIOS Setup Utility.

6. In the BIOS Setup Utility, select Load Optimized Defaults, and then press the ENTER key.

7. Press the Y key, and then press ENTER to select Load Optimized Defaults.

8. In the BIOS Setup Utility, select Save and Exit Setup, and then press ENTER.

9. Press Y, and then press ENTER to Save and EXIT.

Removal

Because a computer must have a BIOS to operate, there is no removal process. The BIOS cannot be removed after it has been upgraded.

Troubleshooting

If you have trouble flashing the BIOS, try the process again following the steps listed in the Installation section of this document. If you are still unable to flash the BIOS, verify that you are actually attempting to flash the BIOS on an ECS uBTX motherboard. If this process still fails, contact technical support.

There may be an error indicating a CMOS Checksum error. At the Gateway Splash screen, press the F2 key to enter the BIOS Setup Utility. Press the ENTER key to select Load Optimized Defaults and Save and Exit Setup. The computer restarts.
