1. INTRODUCTION
PortAssist Manager is a hardware management and reporting software tool to be
employed by users of Digi products. The target user base for this tool is a
small-to-medium size network shop that does not already use expensive and
sophisticated SNMP-based network management programs like HP OpenView and IBM
NetView. The three primary purposes for using PortAssist Manager are:
o Real-time (10-second minimum display update rate), status monitoring of
Digi International boards
o Alerting of alarm conditions related to the operation of Digi
International boards
o Troubleshooting aide and support to Digi International technical support
in assisting you in determining whether or not to remove the board from
the server for repair
For more information about PortAssist Manager and how it works, go to
www.portassist.com.

o 4412 - Fixed a hang when upgrading PortAssist Manager on some versions of unix.
o 4750 - Minor install issue on Win2k (install window wasn't brought to front
and given focus).
o 5606 - Fixed font problems with Linux Netscapes.
5. KNOWN LIMITATIONS
The following are known limitations found in this release:
o When installing with JVM version 1.3, there may be some anomalies in the
display during installation.
o On the modem reset screen, when using a PRI line, only the first 23 channels
are available for reset. The 24th channel of each line is the D-channel, and
is not associated with a modem.
o Driver packages that include the PortAssist Communication Agent use UDP
port 2362 (IANA:digiman) to communicate with the PortAssist Manager
server. In addition, port 8080 and 9090 are used by the PortAssist
Manager server to provide web-based management services. For general
security reasons, Digi always recommends to protect your corporate
network against any potential threats like outright attacks and improper
usage, which could originate from both outside or within your own
company. In the case of PortAssist Manager, system administrators are
advised to alter their firewall settings accordingly to prevent
unauthorized access to the management capabilities of all PortAssist
components by restricting access to the respective ports to trusted
users/peers only.
o Some new PortAssist Manager features and enhancements are not supported by
older drivers and firmware. These features may appear as grayed out text
and disabled. Other unsupported enhancements may appear as the word
"Unavailable." In order to benefit from these new features and
enhancements, it is recommended that you update your drivers to the latest
version available from Digi for your product.
Go to www.portassist.com for further assistance in obtaining the latest
drivers for supported products.
6. INSTALLATION
Please refer to www.portassist.com to find detailed instructions on installing,
configuring, and uninstalling PortAssist Manager software.
7. HISTORY
Version 2.0.0
ENHANCEMENTS
o The ability to monitor and test AccelePort Xp adapters
o The ability to operate on various UNIX operating systems, including Linux,
SCO OpenServer, SCO UnixWare 7, Sun Solaris (Sparc and Intel), and AIX
o Better concurrency, with respect to server/adapter-host communications.
This yields greatly improved application performance - particularly when
when some of the configured systems displayed within the "Network View"
cannot respond to management requests (i.e., "Agent Not Responding")
due to general network problems.
o Better resource efficiency. The new version uses significantly less
memory than the previous version(s).
o The auto-refresh mechanism (part of the real-time status monitoring) was
re-designed such that the update countdown does not begin until the
current refresh operation completes. This makes it easy to use
PortAssist Manager with slower WAN, or dial-up, connections.
o PortAssist Manager "Server Detail" screen was added to report information
specific to the host running the PortAssist Manager server.
o MSIE version 5+ will now display (and support) the same "Print" option
in the footer as Netscape.
o Netscape 6 will correctly operate with PortAssist Manager.
o Many of the table-based screens relied on underlined text to initiate
additional functionality to the end user. These have been replaced with
push-buttons to make it more clear that they are functional operations,
instead of state indicators.
BUG FIXES
o When viewing confirmation dialog boxes, the footer will update with
"please wait...". The main-frame will not refresh while the browser is
displaying a JavaScript confirmation box. The JavaScript confirmation
dialogs will "suspend" the auto-refresh mechanism and update the footer
with a new one that states that we are waiting for user confirmation.
On 'Cancel', the previous footer is silently restored. On 'OK', the
main frame is refreshed in the usual manner.
o Modified the HTML document headers to ensure that content frames are
never cached. The symptom of this was "incorrect navigation."
o Fixed some text-wrapping problems related to very long system names.
o Many of the screens, particularly the initial login screen, had troubles
with "TAB-traversal" when viewed with Netscape. This has been corrected.
o In "Network View", the active channels and alarming channels do not
meet when all channels are used. The "bar graph" functionality was
fixed to correctly indicate used and ununsed channels of the various
types.
Version 1.2.0
ENHANCEMENTS
o The ability to busy out any channel on a DataFire RAS 24/48 or AccelePort
RAS adapter irregardless of whether it is used as a modem or B Channel
o The ability to hang up any modem or B Channel call currently active on a
DataFire RAS or AccelePort RAS adapter
o The ability to conduct a soft or hard reset on any arbitrary modem on a
DataFire RAS or AccelePort RAS adapter
o Additional fields for transmit rate, received and transmitted byte counts,
and error counts on the line summary and modem summary screens for both
DataFire RAS and AccelePort RAS adapters
o Digi DataFire DSP cPCI adapters are supported
o Speed ups to the communication between the PortAssist Manager server and
the systems being viewed
BUG FIXES
o The modem summary screen for AccelePort RAS adapters displays accurate
data on idle channels
o The "Digi PortAssist Manager" program group is removed when PortAssist
Manager is uninstalled
o Configuration details for a Digi DataFire 30/60 adapter displays correct
data for an E1 interface
o PortAssist Manager functions using Java 2 compliant Virtual Machines
o The data rate for 56K ISDN B Channel calls is displayed properly in the
line summary and B Channel summary screen for DataFire RAS adapters
o The installation and configuration will not let you pick a HTTP port if it
is already in use.
o The D channel is not considered a B channel on Digi DataFire 30/60
adapters
o Servers with very high CPU utilization are less likely to have inactive
links, or "Agent not responding" messages
