Overview

These drivers only install and function correctly on a 9300 computer with a chassis part number of 3500720,3500721,3500722,3500723,3500725,3500873,3500874,3500920.  To identify your computer model, on the bottom of the computer look for a sticker with a number starting with 350.  Verify that the number matches one of the required numbers to be certain that this update is vaild for your computer.  There are only two reasons to perform this BIOS flash.

1.  You are updating to a newer BIOS revision.

2.  A Gateway technician has told you to flash or reflash the computer.


Identification

To identify your computer model, check the bottom of the computer.  The model type reads as Gateway Model no. Solo 9300 Pro.


Installation

Follow these steps to flash or reflash the computer:

Download BIOS 16.86 part number 7509026, and then click the .exe file to extract the BIOS files.  The default download path is C:\cabs\7509026.

1.  Copy the BIOS files to a floppy disk.

2.  Verify that the computer is plugged into the alternating current adapter.

3.  Boot clean to the hard disk drive or to a bootable system disk.  For information on how to boot clean, read the Troubleshooting section.

4.  Insert the disk with the BIOS upgrade files into the floppy disk drive.  If necessary, switch to the floppy disk drive:  At the prompt, type:  A:, and then press the ENTER key.

5.  Type: k1686.exe, and then press ENTER to start the BIOS flash process.

    Note:  The program attempts to detect the computer type and install the appropriate BIOS.  After the BIOS has been installed, the computer shuts down or restarts.

6.  When the computer restarts, press the F2 key to enter the BIOS Setup Utility.  The message,"CMOS CHECKSUM INVALID, DEFAULT VALUES WILL BE LOADED," is likely to occur.  

7.  Verify any previously customized BIOS Setup Utility settings are intact.

8.  Move to the Exit menu screen, and then select Save Changes & Exit.  Press ENTER, and then press ENTER again.

9.  The computer restarts.  Remove the floppy disk from the floppy disk drive.
    

Troubleshooting

If you have difficulties installing this BIOS, download the file again, and repeat the installation steps.


*** How do I extract or copy files to a floppy disk? *** 

Extract the files to a floppy disk by copying the dowloaded BIOS file to a blank, formatted disk.  After the file has been copied to the floppy, extract the files by typing the .exe file name, and then press ENTER.
OR
If the extracted files have already been copied to a directory on the hard disk, copy them to a blank disk.


*** How do I boot clean? ***

If running WINDOWS 95:
   Remove all floppy disks from the computer.
   Press CTRL+ALT+DEL simultaneously.
   When the message "Starting Windows 95..." appears on the screen, press the F8 key.
   Select Safe mode command prompt only, and then press the ENTER key.

If running Windows 98:
   Remove all floppy disks from the computer.
   From the Start menu, click Shutdown. In the Shut Down Windows dialog box, click Restart.
   Hold the left CTRL key as the computer restarts.
   This opens a startup menu.
   Select Safe mode command prompt only, and then press the ENTER key.

If running Windows ME, 2000, or NT:
   Insert the Portable Restoration CD in the CD/DVD drive.
   From the Start menu, click Shutdown.  In the Shut Down Windows dialog box, click Restart.
   At the prompt to start to the CD or from the hard disk, select CD.
   From the Start Up menu, select DOS prompt.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
