Overview

This document describes the steps necessary to install and configure the Orinoco Wireless Network Card drivers for the Gateway 600YG2, Gateway 400SD4, and Gateway 400VTX notebook computers in Windows 2000 or Windows XP.


Identification

If you have a Gateway 600YGR2, Gateway 400VTX, or Gateway 400SD4 notebook computer with an Orinoco wireless solution and are running Windows 2000 or Windows XP, install these drivers.


Driver Installation

Windows XP

1.  The files extract to the C:\Cabs\9522473\WinXP folder. 

2.  From the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.  

3.  In Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance, and then double-click the System icon.  

4.  In the System Properties dialog box, click the Hardware tab.  On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager.

5.  If installing for the first time:
 
 a. In Device Manager, under Other Devices, double-click Lucent Technologies-WaveLAN/IEEE.
 b.  In the Lucent Technologies-WaveLAN/IEEE properties dialog box, click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver.
    
 If installing over an earlier driver:

 a.  In Device Manager, under Network adapters, double-click Orinoco Mini PCI Card.
 b.  In the Orinoco Mini PCI card properties dialog box, click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver.

6.  In the Update Device Driver Wizard dialog box, click Next.

7.  In the Update Device Driver Wizard dialog box, click Next.

8.  In the Update Device Driver Wizard dialog box, click Finish.

9.  In the Systems Settings Change dialog box, click Yes to restart the computer.

10.  The network specific settings need to be made in Client Manager and in the properties of the Network Connection.


Windows 2000

1.  The files extract to the C:\Cabs\9522473\Win2k folder.

2.  From the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.  

3.  In Control Panel, double-click the System icon.  

4.  In the System Properties dialog box, click the Hardware tab.  On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager.

5.  If installing for the first time:

 a.  In Device Manager, under Other Devices, double-click Lucent Technologies-WaveLAN/IEEE.
 b.  In the Lucent Technologies-WaveLAN/IEEE properties dialog box, click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver.
    
 If installing over an earlier driver:

 a.  In Device Manager, under Network adapters, double-click Orinoco Mini PCI Card.
 b.  In the Orinoco Mini PCI card properties dialog box, click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver.

6.  In the Upgrade Device Driver Wizard dialog box, click Next.

7.  In the Upgrade Device Driver Wizard dialog box, click Next.

8.  In the Upgrade Device Driver Wizard dialog box, click to clear the Floppy Drive check box, and then select the Specify a location check box.  Type the location where you downloaded and extracted the wireless driver files, and then click Next.  The default path of the drivers is C:\Cabs\9522473\WIN2k.

9.  Windows identifies the Orinoco Network connection.  In the Upgrade Device Driver Wizard dialog box, click Next.

10.  In the Upgrade Device Driver Wizard dialog box, click Finish.

11.  From the Start menu, click Run.

12.  In the Run dialog box, type: C:\Cabs\9522473\Win2k\2KFIX\FIX.BAT.  Click OK.

13.  An MS-DOS window appears.  After the MS-DOS window closes, restart the computer.


Client Manager Installation

Note: If you are upgrading to the latest driver, remove the previous Client Manager software first. Also, Windows XP has built in Client Manager software, but Orinoco's can be used.

1.  The files extract to the C:\Cabs\9522473\Client folder.

2.  From the Start menu, click My Computer.

3.  In the My Computer window, double-click Local Disk (C:).

4.  In the Local Disk (C:) window, double-click Cabs.

5.  In the Cabs folder, double-click 9522473.

6.  In the 9522473 folder, double-click Client.

7.  In the Client folder, double-click Setup.

8.  In the Wireless Client Manager window, in the Welcome dialog box, click Next.

9.  In the License Agreement dialog box, click Yes to accept the terms of the license agreement.

10.  In the Choose Destination Location dialog box, click Next.

11.  In the Select Program Folder dialog box, click Next.

12.  In the Select the language dialog box, click Next.

13.  In the InstallShield Wizard Complete dialog box, click Finish.


Removing the ORiNOCO Wireless NIC Driver

1.  In Windows 2000, from the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.  In Control Panel, double-click the System icon.  In the System Properties dialog box, click the Device Manager tab.

In Windows XP, from the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.  In Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance, and then double-click the System icon.  In the System Properties dialog box, click the Hardware tab.  On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager.

2.  In Windows XP or Windows 2000 Device Manager, select ORiNOCO Mini PCI Card, and then from the Action menu, click Uninstall. 


Removing the Client Manager Software

Windows XP

1.  Open Control Panel. 

 If you are using the Windows XP default Start menu, from the Start menu, click Control Panel. 
 If you are using the Classic Start Menu, from the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

2.  In Control Panel, open Add or Remove Programs. 

 If you are in Category View, click Add or Remove Programs. 
 If you are in Classic View, double-click Add or Remove Programs.

3.  In the Add or Remove Programs window, click ORiNOCO Client Manager, and then click Change/Remove.
 
4.  In the ORiNOCO Client Manager dialog box, click Yes.

5.  When prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.

Windows 2000

1.  From the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

2.  In Control Panel, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.

3.  In the Add/Remove Programs window, click ORiNOCO Client Manager, and then click Change/Remove.
 
4.  In the ORiNOCO Client Manager dialog box, click Yes.

5.  When prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.


Troubleshooting

If you are having difficulty during or after the driver installation, follow the removal procedure, and then re-install the drivers.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.
