Port, Inc. Port Portable 24X PC Card CD-ROM driver installation Driver installation for Windows 95/98 * IMPORTANT * This disk is not needed for installation under Windows 95/98. The drivers needed by the MicroCD should be contained within your Windows files. If a driver file is reported as missing during the installation of the MicroCD under Windows 95/98, please verify the existance of the MSHDC.INF file within your Windows files or contact your PC manufacturer. If the DOS PCMCIA software layer was already installed on your machine when Windows 95 was first installed, you should be able to edit the CONFIG.SYS file and see that the lines concerning the PCMCIA socket drivers have been REMarked out. Normally, the Windows 95 Installation Wizard REMarks out these lines when it detects both a PLug & Play PCMCIA hardware and a Plug & Play machine BIOS at installation time. There are at least two such lines, one for the Socket Services driver and the other for the Card Services driver. An example is given below: 'REM Socket Services Driver : DEVICE = XXXXSS.SYS' 'REM Card Services Driver : DEVICE = XXXXCS.SYS' If these lines are not REMarked out in CONFIG.SYS, you should try again to install the appropriate Windows 95/98 PCMCIA Socket Driver from the Windows 95/98 Control Panel running the program 'Add New Hardware'. If this does not succeed, i.e. if the above lines are not eventually REMarked out, this probably means that your machine does not support Plug & Play PCMCIA and that you can only install traditionnal so-called REAL MODE DOS drivers. In this case, follow the manual instructions to install the DOS and Windows 3.x PCMCIA CDROM drivers which should still work fine under Windows 95 in REAL MODE. To check that the PCMCIA socket hardware has been dully recognized and installed by the Windows 95/98 Installation Wizard, you should see your PCMCIA socket hardware in the list of installed devices given by the 'Device Manager' (click on 'System' in the 'Control Panel' and then 'Device Manager' to display the list of installed devices). When the CDROM PCMCIA card is first plugged into one of the PCMCIA sockets, once the PCMCIA socket hardware has been mounted by Windows 95/98, the Installation Wizard will pop up a window informing you that a new piece of hardware has just been found and request you to select a driver for this new hardware from the following options : . Windows default driver, . Driver from disk provided by hardware manufacturer, . Do not install a driver, . Select from a list of alternate drivers. Select the second option, 'Windows default driver' and follow the instructions given by the Installation Wizard. The CDROM drive should be recognized after installation without rebooting. If by mistake, you have installed some other driver than the 'Standard ESDI/IDE driver', which you can check from the list of installed hardware from the Device Manager under the 'Hard Disks' heading, you should Remove this driver from the list, pull out the CDROM card from the PCMCIA slot, insert it back and start the installion anew. There should be now two new entries in the list of devices displayed by the Device Manager, one under the heading 'CDROM' which shows the model of CDROM drive (e.g. TOSHIBA CDROM XM5xxx) and one extra entry under 'Hard Drives' with the name of the device driver 'Standard ESDI/IDE driver'. In most cases, there should be two such entries, one for the internal IDE hard drive and another for the CDROM drive. The same driver is used for the CDROM hard drives and CDROM drives.Download Driver Pack
