Sound 3 Modem Driver Repair

Purpose of This Procedure:

This procedure is designed to enable the user to repair corrupted Sound 3 Modem drivers.

1. Insert the Sound 3 Driver Files diskette into Drive A: (or appropriate 3 1/2" floppy drive letter). 
2. Go to the Start menu and select "settings"
3. Select "Control Panel"
4. Double click the "System" Icon
5. Click on the "Device Manager" tab
6. Double-Click on the icon that says "Sound, Video, and Game Controllers.
7. If you know which device is causing the problem, double click that device to display it's properties. If you do not know which device is causing the problem you must repeat the following procedure for each of the devices listed under this icon.
8. Click on the "Driver" tab.
9. Click on the box that says "Change Driver" or "Update Driver"
10. Click on "Have Disk" or "No, select driver from list"
11. When Windows 95 asks for the location of any files point it to the floppy drive
12. If asked for the file GENMID.WSL select "Skip File". This file can be found on the Windows 95 Installation CD and can be loaded later if you don't have the CD at the present time. Not loading this file will disable the MIDI input generator in the operating system software but will not effect the Winmodem functionality in any other areas.
13. Reboot system and test modem in Device Manager or in any communications software you are running.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
