This file is provided to owners and users of the Rio Cali and Chiba players for
the express purpose of flashing, or reinstalling, the Rio firmware.

1. File Contents

***NOTE: This updater will update your player to firmware version 1.12 or 
version 2.43, depending on your player.***

The executable file RioCaliChiba_firmware_243.exe is a self-extracting 
compressed file, which when expanded, places the following files 
on your computer in a folder called C:\RioCaliChiba\Flash243\.

RioCaliChibaFlash_243.exe - This is the utility which communicates with 
the Rio hardware and installs the firmware file to the Rio.

Readme.txt - This is a copy of the file you are reading now.

2. Instructions

**Note**  Contents on players internal and external memory may be lost 
	  during the upgrade! 
**Note**  Please put a fresh battery in the Cali or Chiba before proceeding.

**NOTE** This updater will update your player to firmware version 1.12 or 
version 2.43, depending on your player.

2.1   Prior to installing and running the firmware update close all programs.
2.2   Run the self-extracting file RioCaliChiba_firmware_243.exe which you 
      downloaded from the Internet.  It should extract to C:\RioCaliChiba\Flash243\
      unless you specified an alternate location.
2.3   Connect the Rio player to the computer with the USB cable.
2.4   Turn the Rio player on.
2.5   Double click on the Icon labeled 'RioCaliChibaFlash_243.exe'
2.6   Press the 'Next' button, and the firmware upgrader will detect your Rio player.
2.7   Press the button labeled 'Next'.  The firmware will 
      begin transferring to the Rio player.
2.8   Once finished, press 'Finish' to exit the firmware upgrade application.

3. Release Notes for 1.12

3.1 Resolved an issue whereby some purchased WMA tracks experienced a skipping or stutter when played back.

3.2 Resolved an issue whereby noticeable clicking could be heard on the headphones when powering the unit on or off.

3.3 Tuner mute icon now flashes.


4. Release Notes for 2.43

4.1 This is the production release firmware that ships on Napster Chiba 128 and the following Rio Cali and Chiba part numbers. It includes fixes described in section 3:

28260100 - Chiba 256MB
28260102 - Chiba 128MB
28260097 - Cali 256MB
28260096 - Cali 128MB

**Note** If you install this firmware release on a Cali or Chiba that doesn't match the description above, the firmware version of your Cali or Chiba will be version 1.12.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
