Windows 2000 External USB Floppy Bay Installation

1.  Insert the floppy drive into the External USB Floppy Bay.
2.  Insert a floppy diskette into the floppy drive.
3.  Attach one end of the USB cable to the External USB Floppy Bay and the other end to the external USB port on your notebook computer or port replicator.
4.  A "Found New Hardware" dialog box will open, [Click] Next.
5.  Select "Search for a suitable...", Click Next.
6.  Select "Specify a location", Click Next.
7.  Browse to the location you extracted the file you downloaded, Click OK.
8.  Windows will search for a suitable driver and display a list of available drivers.
9.  Check the box labeled "Install one of the other drivers", Click Next.
10. Highlight the second device listed "SMSC USB FDC", Click Next.
11. A Dialog box will open and close.
12. Click Finish when prompted.
13. Close all open windows.

The active USB floppy disk drive will appear as Drive B:\ in your My Computer or Windows Explorer window.


NOTE:  An inactive floppy drive A:\ will still be listed in your My Computer or Windows Explorer window but will not be accessible. You will receive an error message if you attempt to access the A:\ drive. This only occurs when the floppy disk drive is attached as a USB device. If the floppy disk drive is installed in the Flex-Bay the A:\ drive will be the active floppy disk drive.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
