PCMCIA Ethernet/Fax/Modem Installation for Microsoft Windows NT 3.5x & 4.0 Contents -------- Introduction Getting Started Support Options Copyrights, Trademarks, and Disclaimers Introduction ------------ Windows NT provides support for PC Card (PCMCIA) compatibile systems. For this installation please print out this README.TXT using NOTEPAD. Proceed according to the instructions below. Do not run any of the LanModem's install programs, these are unnecessary for the NT environment. Before inserting your LanModem PC Card, the system's PCMCIA chipset must be enabled and functioning. The PCMCIA chipset is responsible for controlling the systems interface for PC Cards. Please consult the system's manual or the manufacturer for use with Windows NT. Multifunction PC Cards put a heavy demand on a system's resources. Please resolve all system conflicts, errors, and other Windows NT issues before installing the LanModem. Please have the installation media for Windows NT ready for any file requests. The following installation does require a basic knowledge of the NT environment. Getting Started for Windows NT3.5x ---------------------------------- Remove all PC Cards from the system Start/Boot Windows NT Login as a user with full access (e.g. ADMINISTRATOR) Remove any previous network support -Open the PROGRAM MANAGER -Open the MAIN group -Run the CONTROL PANEL -Run the NETWORK selection -Highlight each network option and remove them Note: Remove any adapters first, then server, workstation, etc. -After all support is removed, press CLOSE -Restart Windows NT Remove all Serial Port support -Open the PROGRAM MANAGER -Open the MAIN group -Run the CONTROL PANEL -Run the PORTS selection -Highlight each COM port and remove them Note: If problems develop removing the COM ports make sure the NT system has been updated to the lastest service pack from Microsoft. -After all support is removed, press CLOSE -Restart Windows NT Add PCMCIA Support to your laptop -Open the PROGRAM MANAGER -Open the MAIN group -Run the CONTROL PANEL -Run the DEVICES selection -Select PCMCIA -Press STARTUP -Select BOOT so that it will start each time NT boots. -Press OK -After all PCMCIA support is added press CLOSE -Restart Windows NT Verify the system will reboot without any errors in the Event Viewer Consult your Laptop manufacture for any problems that may develop during pre-installation. Insert LanModem into one of the system's PCMCIA Slots Boot/Start Windows NT Login as a user with full access (e.g. ADMINISTRATOR) Open the PROGRAM MANAGER Open the MAIN group Run the CONTROL PANEL Run the NETWORK selection Press YES to install network support Supply the path of the NT installation media (e.g. NT CD-ROM: D:\i386) Press DO NOT DETECT for the network adapter Pull the NETWORK ADAPTER CARD selection list to the bottom Select <OTHER> REQUIRES DISK FROM MANUFACTURE Click CONTINUE button Insert the LanModem driver disk into drive A: Supply the path to the drivers on the disk (e.g. A:\WINNT) Highlight the only choice for the LanModem and press OK A dialog box will appear to adjust the driver's settings. Adjust the driver to the system's resources, these selections must be unique for this device. Resource Recommendations ------------------------ ==================================================================== ºI/O Base ³ 300 normally safe, º º ³ possible alternative 320 º ==================================================================== ºInterrupt ³ 5 normally safe; if the laptop is multimedia º º(IRQ) ³ equipped, try a higher interrupt such as 11 º ==================================================================== ºBase Memory ³ D000 normally safe, possible alternate D800 º º(MEM) ³ º ==================================================================== ºCOM port ³ Select a COM port that is not in the computer. º º ³ Even if the laptop has an unused serial port º º ³ it still is counted. º ==================================================================== ºCOM IRQ ³ Select an IRQ that is unique. 5 or 9 is º º ³ normally safe. This should not match the IRQ º º ³ above for Ethernet card. º ==================================================================== When all settings are complete Press OK Windows NT will load network support, and allow configuration of -NWLink -TCP/IP -Netbeui These selections and configurations are for the user. We cannot help configure these because they are unique for each network. Please see the Network Administrator for help. Once all Network software is loaded Press OK The configuration and bindings for the card may be confirmed; answer the questions accordingly. Allow the system to reboot. Connect to a network using the provide 10BaseT cable Test the adapter -Open the PROGRAM MANAGER -Open the MAIN group -Run the FILE MANAGER -Select DISK on the menu -Select CONNECT TO NETWORK DRIVE -If any computers are displayed on the network the system is working The card installation is complete. Should any error arise in the Event Viewer please start at the top of this document again. Also please see the next section to configure NT properly for the use of the fax/modem. NT Communication Configuration ------------------------------ If NT is not running Boot/Start NT Login as a user with full access Test the adapter -Start/Boot NT -Login with a username that has full rights -Open the PROGRAM MANAGER -Open the ACCESORIES group -Run the FILE MANAGER -Run TERMINAL -Under SETTING, select Communications Configuration -Select the COM port. -Select up to 57.6K for communcations, Press OK -In the terminal window if you can type ATZ{enter} and it returns OK you are finished. Getting Started for Windows NT4.0 --------------------------------- Remove all PC Cards from the system Start/Boot Windows NT Login as a user with full access (ie. ADMINISTRATOR) Remove any previous network support -Open MY COMPUTER -Run the CONTROL PANEL -Run the NETWORK applet -Select ADAPTERS page; remove all previously installed devices -After all adapters are removed, press CLOSE -Don't restart Windows NT Remove all Serial Port support -Open MY COMPUTER -Run the CONTROL PANEL -Run the PORTS applet -Highlight each COM port and remove it -After all are removed, press CLOSE Shutdown Windows NT NT Networking Configuration --------------------------- Insert LanModem into one of the system's PCMCIA Slots Start Windows NT 4.0 Login as a user with full access (ie. ADMINISTRATOR) Open MY COMPUTER Run the CONTROL PANEL Run the NETWORK applet case 1: NT Networking is not installed -------------------------------------- Select YES to install networking Press Next and push SELECT FROM LIST button Press HAVE DISK button Insert the LanModem driver disk into drive A: Supply the path to the drivers (e.g. A:\WINNT) Highlight the only choice for the LanModem and press OK and NEXT Windows NT will allow configuration of -TCP/IP -NWLink IPX/SPX -NetBEUI ... Use default NETWORK SERVICES, just press NEXT twice. Input path to NT System Source files and path A:\ sequentially. A dialog box will appear to adjust the driver's settings. NT Modem Configuration ---------------------- Open MY COMPUTER Run the CONTROL PANEL Run the MODEMS applet Use default setting and press NEXT button System should have detected your card and will enter the Modem Manufacturers & Models selection screen Press FINISH and then CLOSE to complete modem settings Allow the system to reboot The card installation for both LAN and Modem is complete. After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.
Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).
If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.
Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.
Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.
Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.
From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.
Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.
Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
