What You Need

To flash your modem to the V.90 protocol, download the V.90 flash program, and have your Shark K56flex modem installed on your Windows 98 computer. If you have an external modem, turn it on.

How to Update Your Modem in Windows

There are 3 steps to upgrade your modem to V.90. The details of each step are listed in the sections below. If you find you need to flash back to K56flex, those instructions are at the end.
1.	Download and open the V.90 flash program.
2.	Flash your modem with the V.90 flashcom utility.
3.	Run the uninstal.exe and reboot using the new drivers to update your Modem in Windows.


Downloading and Opening the Flash program and Driver File

1.	Download the V.90 program.
2.	Double-click the file to extract the V.90 upgrade utility,(default directory is "Sharkmm")make a note where you extracted the files. 


Flashing Your Modem with V.90

1.	Exit any software that may be using your modem.
2.	Double-click the flash utility file (flashcom.exe) you just extracted.
3.	The program will auto-detect which com port your modem is on and will report "flash-Loadable" if your modem is able to be flash upgraded by this flash utility.  If it does not detect a "flash-loadable" modem, DO NOT continue the upgrade.  Recheck that you have the correct flash utility for the corresponding modem.  
4.	Click the Flash "Load Now" button.
A box will appear with "Are you sure?" Click OK.
5.	It will take about two minutes to upgrade, when finished it will change to "verifying load".  When it is finished it should read "LOAD SUCCESSFUL!"  Showing the old ID and the New ID. 
6.	Click Close
NOTE: If this is the first time you’re flashing to V.90, continue with the next section, Updating Your Modem in Windows 98. 
If this is the second time you’re flashing to V.90,  and you’ve completed the following section, Updating Your Modem in Windows 98, stop here.


Updating Your Modem in Windows 98

It is important that you complete the following steps in the order in which they appear.

1.	Click the uninstal.exe file extracted from the V.90 flash program
2.	Then reboot your computer
3.	When windows finishes booting, it will auto-detect the modem and look for the new drivers.  Make sure you direct it to look in the place where you extracted the downloaded V.90 flash program.
4.	It will find a wave device also if this modem is capable of voice and once again direct windows to look in the place where you extracted the downloaded V.90 flash program.
5.	Next go to the control panel >>> click on modems >>> you should see that your modem is installed then click on the diagnostics tab >>> hi-light the comport that your modem is installed on by clicking on it and click "More info".  It should report modem information with no error messages.

How to Tell if Your Modem Has Been Updated and Installed Correctly

These steps will show you how to make sure your modem has been correctly flashed with the V.90 firmware, and will show you how to ensure that your modem is working correctly with your operating system.
1.	Click Start, select Settings, Control Panel and double-click Modems.
2.	Click the Diagnostics tab.
3.	Select the COM port that’s associated with your modem.
Click the More Info... button.
You should see a list of commands that Windows 98 issued to your modem, and the modem’s responses.
Look at the first response to the ATi3 command. This shows the number of the version of firmware that’s on your modem. 
If the number starts with V2.XXX..., then you’ve correctly updated to V.90. 
If it begins with V.1.XXX..., you still have K56flex firmware.


Updating Applications You Use With Your Modem

After you’ve flashed your modem to V.90, you need to check the modem setup sections in the applications which use your modem, and tell them look for your "new" modem. Because Windows saw it as a "new" modem, so will any software you use with it.


Flashing Back to K56flex

If you find a reason to flash back to K56flex, follow the instructions below. When you flash back to K56flex, it is not necessary to follow the instructions in Updating Your Modem in Windows 98.
1.	Download the flash for your modem for K56 Flex from the shark Multimedia Web page
2.	follow the instructions for that flash loader to load the latest version of K56 Flex firmware.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
