WINNT.TXT file 3Com Corporation 3Com Megahertz LAN + Modem PC Card (3CxEM556 PC Card family) Network Drivers Installation Notes WINDOWS NT AND MICROSOFT WINDOWS NETWORKING This document describes how to configure the 3CxEM556 card for use with Windows NT v4.0 (Server or Workstation) and Windows NT v3.51 without using the SETUP.EXE program. The SETUP.EXE will guide most users through installing the 3CxEM556 card under Windows NT. The following instructions will work in those cases when the SETUP.EXE does not work properly with the computer's configuration. If you have Windows NT v3.50 or earlier, you will need to upgrade your system to v3.51 or later. Versions prior to Windows NT v3.51 do not have PC card support, so they do not support the 3CxEM556 card. In addition, you must load Service Pack 3 to properly use the card in Windows NT 4.0. Please contact your Network Administrator or Microsoft for information on obtaining and installing Service Pack 3. NOTE: The following instructions assume that you have not installed any other network adapter. If you have already been using a network adapter on your computer, some of these instructions may not apply or may produce different results. In this case, please refer to your System Administrator or MIS department for instructions. NOTE: For installation purposes, the XJack and Cable versions of the LAN + Modem card are identical. Instructions for Windows NT v. 4.0 ================================== NOTE: The 3CxEM556 requires that Service Pack 3 be installed on your computer. Instructions for Windows NT v. 3.51 =================================== NOTE: Do not install using Installation Disk #2 in NT 3.51. Windows NT v. 3.51 will not support the NDIS4 driver. Before installing the network driver, you should know the following: - Transport used in the Microsoft Windows Network. - Name of the NT Server domain or Windows 95/WFW 3.11 Workgroup to which you belong. For a successful installation you will also need: - Windows NT system installation files (either on hard disk, floppy diskettes, or CD). - 3CxEM556 LAN + Modem card and the accompanying Installation Disk #2. Installation instructions: 1. Turn on the computer and log on. 2. Go to the Main group and select the Control Panel icon. 3. From the Control Panel, select the Network icon. 4. When the system prompts: "Windows NT Networking is not installed. Install it now?" Click "Yes". 5. The Windows NT Setup window appears. Enter the name of the drive or directory where your NT system installation files reside. When ready, click "Continue". 6. Click "Do Not Detect". Windows NT does not fully support the Plug and Play feature and cannot automatically detect the LAN + Modem card. 7. When the Add Network Adapter dialog window appears, it displays a list of adapter names. Use the down arrow to find and select: "<Other> Requires disk from manufacturer." 8. When the list of adapters closes, click "Continue". The Insert Disk dialog box opens and prompts you for the location of a driver file. The driver file is located on Installation Disk #1 in the root directory. Type the directory path, A:\ and click OK. 9. Select 3Com Megahertz LAN + Modem PC Card (3CxEM556) and click OK. 10. Enter the settings for the LAN + Modem card. Since Windows NT does not support the Plug and Play feature, you must supply the appropriate settings for the card. In most cases, the default settings will work, but if you are unsure about what settings to use, ask your System Administrator or MIS department. When the settings are entered, click OK to open the Windows NT Setup dialog window. 11. Select the network transport protocol that Windows NT will use. The TCP/IP transport will already be selected for use. If you have no reason to use TCP/IP, delete it now. Select the transport appropriate for the network client. Most Microsoft NT networks use the NWLink IPX/SPX Compatible Transport. If you are not sure, ask your System Administrator or MIS department. When Windows NT Setup is complete, click OK to open the Network Settings dialog window. 12. Click Continue to open the Windows NT Setup screen. Supply the name of the drive or directory where your NT system installation files reside and click "Continue". This returns you to the Network Settings dialog window. 13. Click OK to open the NW Link IPX/SPX Protocol Configuration dialog window. For most networks, AUTO DETECTED will work. When done selecting the frame type, click OK. 14. The Domain/Workgroup Settings window appears. Select the appropriate domain or workgroup name for Windows Networking and click Ok. (This name has nothing to do with the Novell client.) When these steps are complete, you must restart your computer. Remove the Installation Disk #1 from Drive A and press the Restart button. (%VER WINNT.TXT v5.56.0)Download Driver Pack
