 Network Drivers Installation Notes

WINDOWS NT AND MICROSOFT WINDOWS NETWORKING

This document describes how to configure the 3CxEM556 card for
use with Windows NT v4.0 (Server or Workstation) and Windows
NT v3.51 without using the SETUP.EXE program.

The SETUP.EXE will guide most users through installing the
3CxEM556 card under Windows NT. The following instructions
will work in those cases when the SETUP.EXE does not work
 properly with the computer's configuration.

If you have Windows NT v3.50 or earlier, you will need to
upgrade your system to v3.51 or later. Versions prior to
Windows NT v3.51 do not have PC card support, so they do not
support the 3CxEM556 card. In addition, you must load
Service Pack 3 to properly use the card in Windows NT 4.0.
Please contact your Network Administrator or Microsoft for
information on obtaining and installing Service Pack 3.

NOTE: The following instructions assume that you have not
installed any other network adapter. If you have already
been using a network adapter on your computer, some of
these instructions may not apply or may produce different
results. In this case, please refer to your System
Administrator or MIS department for instructions.

NOTE: For installation purposes, the XJack and Cable versions
of the LAN + Modem card are identical.

Instructions for Windows NT v. 4.0
 ==================================
NOTE: The 3CxEM556 requires that Service Pack 3 be installed
on your computer. Contact your System Administrator,
your laptop vendor, or Microsoft if you need Service
       Pack 3.

       Service Pack 3.0.

=======================
First Time Installation
=======================

1.a.1 Choose "Wired to the network" (Add Remote access later,
consult your NT Documentation for further information)
        and click "Next".

1.a.2 Click on "Select" from the list button.

1.a.3 Click on the "Have Disk" button and insert Installation
        Disk #2 into Drive A.

1.a.4 Choose the A:\ directory.
(If you ran the SETUP.EXE, you can choose to copy the
drivers to C:\MHZ. If you have the Installation disk
copied to the hard drive, type in the location of the
root directory of Installation Disk #2.)

1.a.5 Select your adapter and click OK.

1.a.6 Click "Next".

1.a.7 Choose the appropriate protocols for your network and
click "Next". Consult your System Administrator if you
are unsure which protocols to choose. If you choose
TCPIP, dialog boxes will appear later in the installation
that will allow you to configure the TCPIP settings.

1.a.8 Click "Next". Now click "Next" again.

1.a.9 The Network Setup Wizard will prompt you with a Windows
NT Setup dialog window. Type in the location of the
Windows NT source files. These are normally in an i386
directory. For example from the Windows NT 4.0 CDROM
you would type D:\i386. When this is complete click
        "Continue".

1.a.10 Type in the location of the Installation Diskette #2 Files
Click "Continue". (Same location as in Step 1.a.4.)

Wait for NT to copy files.

1.a.11 At the Network Settings prompt, set the following options:

        - I/O Port Address

        - Memory Address

        - Network Interrupt (identical to modem interrupt)

        - Media Type

        - Full Duplex
(You will usually want this disabled. Enable it
only if you are attaching to a connection configured
          for Full Duplex.)

        - COM Port - The communications port used by the modem.
(Select an unused COM port. Make sure the port is not
being used by another device, such as a built-in
          infrared port.)

1.a.12 After configuring the network settings, click OK.
(You may get the TCPIP configuration dialog windows
after you configure the network settings.)

1.a.13 Click "Next". Now click "Next" again.

1.a.14 You can configure the adapter to attach to a Workgroup
        or Domain.

The following example will assume that you are attaching
        to a Workgroup:

Type in your Computer Name and Workgroup.

        Click "Next".

1.a.15 Click "Finish".

        Remove the Installation Diskette #2.

For the new hardware settings to take effect, restart
        the computer by clicking "Yes".

Disk #2 in the floppy drive and click OK.

1.a.16 Open the Control Panels and select "Modem".

1.a.17 Select "Do not detect modem, I will select from a list"
        and click "Next."

1.a.18 Select "Have Disk".
Put Installation Disk #2 in the floppy drive and click OK.
From the list of models, select 3CxEM556 (your version of
the LAN + Modem card) and click "Next".

1.a.19 Select a port for the modem.
Make sure the "Selected ports" option is enabled and
highlight the port from the list. This port should match
the COM port setting you made in "Changing the COM Port
Setting." If that port is not available, there is probably
a resource conflict with resources chosen in 1.a.11.
Be sure that Service Pack 3 has been run on this machine.

1.a.20 Click "Next".

1.a.21 At the Local Information prompt, enter the appropriate values
for the requested fields and click "Next".

 Restart button.

NOTE: After installation it may be necessary to reinstall
       Service Pack 3.

Instructions for Windows NT v. 3.51
===================================

NOTE: Do not install using Installation Disk #2 in NT 3.51.
Windows NT v. 3.51 will not support the NDIS4 driver.

Before installing the network driver, you should know the
 following:

      - Transport used in the Microsoft Windows Network.
      - Name of the NT Server domain or Windows 95/WFW 3.11
        Workgroup to which you belong.

For a successful installation you will also need:

      - Windows NT system installation files (either on
hard disk, floppy diskettes, or CD).

      - 3CxEM556 LAN + Modem card and the accompanying
        Installation Disk #2.

Installation instructions:

 1. Turn on the computer and log on.

 2. Go to the Main group and select the Control Panel icon.

 3. From the Control Panel, select the Network icon.

 4. When the system prompts:

"Windows NT Networking is not installed. Install it now?"

    Click "Yes".

 5. The Windows NT Setup window appears.
Enter the name of the drive or directory where your NT
system installation files reside. When ready, click
    "Continue".

 6. Click "Do Not Detect".
Windows NT does not fully support the Plug and Play feature
and cannot automatically detect the LAN + Modem card.

 7. When the Add Network Adapter dialog window appears, it
displays a list of adapter names. Use the down arrow
    to find and select:

        "<Other> Requires disk from manufacturer."

 8. When the list of adapters closes, click "Continue".
The Insert Disk dialog box opens and prompts you for
the location of a driver file. The driver file is
located on Installation Disk #1 in the root directory.
Type the directory path, A:\ and click OK.

 9. Select 3Com Megahertz LAN + Modem PC Card (3CxEM556)
    and click OK.

10. Enter the settings for the LAN + Modem card.

Since Windows NT does not support the Plug and Play
feature, you must supply the appropriate settings for
the card. In most cases, the default settings will work,
but if you are unsure about what settings to use, ask
your System Administrator or MIS department. When the
settings are entered, click OK to open the Windows NT
    Setup dialog window.

11. Select the network transport protocol that Windows NT
will use. The TCP/IP transport will already be selected
for use. If you have no reason to use TCP/IP, delete it now.

Select the transport appropriate for the network client.
Most Microsoft NT networks use the NWLink IPX/SPX Compatible
Transport. If you are not sure, ask your System Administrator
    or MIS department.

When Windows NT Setup is complete, click OK to open the
    Network Settings dialog window.

12. Click Continue to open the Windows NT Setup screen.
Supply the name of the drive or directory where your NT
system installation files reside and click "Continue".
This returns you to the Network Settings dialog window.

13. Click OK to open the NW Link IPX/SPX Protocol Configuration
dialog window. For most networks, AUTO DETECTED will work.
When done selecting the frame type, click OK.

14. The Domain/Workgroup Settings window appears. Select the
appropriate domain or workgroup name for Windows Networking
and click Ok. (This name has nothing to do with the
    Novell client.)

When these steps are complete, you must restart your computer.

Remove the Installation Disk #1 from Drive A and press the
 Restart button.
