In several Texas Instruments (TI) series notebooks running Phoenix Card Services, the system will lock up during setup The card can usually be set up on these machines by removing Phoenix Card Services and placing the machine in PCIC or compatible mode. Contact Acer (Acer currently supports the TI Laptop line) for more information on how to accomplish this. For additional information, refer to either Acer’s or 3Com’s Web site. --------------------------------------------------------------- 11. Card is not detected, but my PCMCIA controllers are installed and working. Other Cards function correctly. If I go to Control Panel/PC CARD, the 3Com Megahertz card appears with a yellow question mark or modem or other symbol than a white diamond (signifying a multi-function card) The 3Com Network card has not installed correctly. Run UNINSTAL.EXE from the Installation CD and then run SETUP.EXE again. If this doesn't work, run UNINSTAL.EXE and install using the Plug and Play method. --------------------------------------------------------------- 12. When installing from floppy disk on certain Toshiba laptops, setup cannot read Installation Disk #2. It may return an "Invalid Disk!" error message To use certain Toshiba laptops with multiple disks, you may need to replace file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\IOSUBSYS\HSFLOP.PDR with a new one from Toshiba. This information and the required replacement file should be on the Toshiba Web site. --------------------------------------------------------------- 13. Card fails to install or function correctly Install the card in another slot. --------------------------------------------------------------- Windows NT 4.0 --------------------------------------------------------------- 14. The 3CXEM556 doesn’t install or work properly under Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 or above must be applied with NT 4.0 for the 3CXEM556 LAN+Modem card to work correctly. NOTE: Some laptop vendors have custom versions of Service Pack 3. If you have Service Pack 3 installed and still have problems, we recommend using Microsoft's Service Pack 3. See Microsoft's Web site. --------------------------------------------------------------- DOS --------------------------------------------------------------- 15. AutoLink Hangs Without Completing Remove SMARTDRV.EXE from the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. --------------------------------------------------------------- 16. TI 600CD, TI650CD, TI900, Micron, NEC Versa 6000 series, or other laptops cannot connect to the network Use a different interrupt such as 5, 7, or 11. Use one of the following commands in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file to change the interrupt: EMENABLE /IRQ=5 EMENABLE /IRQ=7 EMENABLE /IRQ=B You may also need to increase the memory exclusion on the EMM386.EXE line in the CONFIG.SYS file to something like this: DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE X=D000-DFFF If you are using Phoenix Card and Socket Services for DOS, edit the PCM.INI in the Phoenix Card Services directory to include IRQ 5 and exclude IRQs 3 and 4. --------------------------------------------------------------- 17. Error "Unable to configure the card" Change the Plug and Play entry in the BIOS to OFF. --------------------------------------------------------------- 18. When trying to run CONFIG on an NEC 6030H and NEC6030X cardbus machine, the system fails to run and the computer must be rebooted You should still be able to connect to your network. See item 15 above, and use IRQ 11. --------------------------------------------------------------- 19. Enabling Full Duplex ---------------- DOS: In file C:\NWCLIENT\NET.CFG, add the keyword: full duplex under the [LINK DRIVER] section. ----------------- WFW: In file C:\WFW\PROTOCOL.INI, add the keyword: fullduplex under the [NWLINK] section. ----------------- LANMANAGER: In file C:\LANMAN.DOS\PROTOCOL.INI, add the keyword: full_duplex=yes under the [EM556N2_NIF] section. ----------------- IBM DOS Lan Server: In file C:\NET\PROTOCOL.INI, add the keyword: full_duplex=yes under the [IBM$NETBEUI] section. --------------------------------------------------------------- Windows 98 and Windows NT 5.0 --------------------------------------------------------------- 20. For Your Information At the time of this release of the LAN + 56K Modem card, Windows 98 and Windows NT 5.0 were not available and are not currently supported. We suggest you use a plug and play installation. As Windows 98 and Windows NT 5.0 become available, check the 3Com web site at http://www.3com.com for information on using the LAN + 56K Modem card. --------------------------------------------------------------- General Hardware Troubleshooting Tips --------------------------------------------------------------- 21. If the card diagnostic tests in CONFIG.EXE run smoothly, the problem may not be the card. Check the following: CONFIG.EXE ---------- - Make sure the card is operating in a computer containing Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA) Release 2.01, Type II or Type III slots. Usually, CONFIG.EXE will work best on an INTEL PCIC or compatible controller. - Make sure the card is completely seated in its slot. Review the installation instructions. - Make sure your computer is running DOS 3.1 or higher, and no device drivers or memory managers are loaded. DOS 6.22 -------------- Reboot and click F5 when the message "Starting MS-DOS" appears on the screen. Windows 95 -------------- Reboot and press F8 when the message "Starting Windows 95" appears on the screen. The Windows 95 boot menu should then appear. Select "Safe Mode Command Prompt Only" (usually option 7). - Inspect all cables and connections. Try the laptop at a known good port. For twisted pair, attach the card directly to the hub or switch. If this works, there is probably an intermediate wiring problem. Contact your System Administrator. - If you are running the Echo Server test, make sure the card is securely connected to a properly cabled network and an echo server is set up on the network. - If you are configuring the I/O base address or interrupt request level, make sure the settings you choose for these parameters do not conflict with any other peripheral device or software program installed in the computer. - Make sure the configuration setting for the transceiver type is correct. - The computer in which the card is installed might be defective. Install the card in a known functioning computer and run the tests again. - Replace the failed card with a known working card with the same configuration. If the second card fails, something is probably wrong with the test environment, not with the card. --------------------------------------------------------------- General Modem TroubleShooting Tips --------------------------------------------------------------- 22. Loopback Tests The following loopback AT commands are not supported: Local Analog Loopback (AT&T8), Remote Analog Loopback (AT&T1, Local Digital Loopback (AT&T6), and Remote Digital Loopback (AT&T3). --------------------------------------------------------------- 23. If You are Using Quicken Version 6 The default maximum baud rate of a modem in Quicken 6 is 19,200bps. Follow the instructions in the Quicken 6 manual to increase this baud rate for your Megahertz modem. --------------------------------------------------------------- 24. Receiving Faxes in ProComm Plus The auto-answer detect feature of ProComm Plus does not work with your 3CXEM556 series modem. Turn auto-answer detect off. --------------------------------------------------------------- 25. Using Automatic Credit Card Dialing When you enter the dial string for a credit card call, place an ampersand (&) at the end of the phone number, before the credit card number. --------------------------------------------------------------- 26. If You Don't Use Error Correction or Data Compression To enhance performance when not using error correction or data compression, set S24=64. --------------------------------------------------------------- 27. Where is the Script file for XXXXX? There are several script files included on Installation CD. Check WWW.3COM.COM for more available Script files. If you are unable to find one for your communications software, check with the vendor or the vendor's Web site for a script file. --------------------------------------------------------------- 28. You can't achieve 56K or 53.3K connections The maximum rate currently allowed by the FCC is 53.3K. You can only achieve these by connecting to a compatible 56K protocol. Your speed may be limited by the number of different nodes between your modem and your ISP. ---------------------------------------------------------------- 29. You Can't Get a 33,600bps Connection Your modem connect speed of 33,600bps is defaulted OFF. To enable a 33,600bps connection, set S33=0. Also, connection and data transfer rates will be dependent on several factors including (but not limited to) the type of modem you are connecting to and the amount of line noise. ---------------------------------------------------------------- 30. Adjusting the Dialtone Volume Your modem is designed to support only one dialtone volume. It cannot be changed. ----------------------------------------------------------------- CELLULAR ----------------------------------------------------------------- 31. The Modem Won't Work Your cellular phone battery may be low. Insert a fully powered battery. --------------------------------------------------------------- 32. You Can't Hear Modem Noises During Dialing and Connection Your 3CXEM556 series modem is designed not to produce audio until a connection is being negotiated. --------------------------------------------------------------- 33. The Cellular Phone Keeps Turning Off The modem is designed to turn off the cellular phone whenever the modem power is turned off. --------------------------------------------------------------- 34. Dial-up Networking Won't Work With Cellular Windows 95 OSR 2 has a feature in the Control Panel under the Power icon (PC-Card Modems tab) called "Turn off PC-Card modems when not in use" that must be disabled during dial-up networking. This should allow you to hear the beep-up tones when the modem is inserted and active, and to use dial-up networking. --------------------------------------------------------------- 35. CRC Errors or Dropped Connections In cellular or data mode, if you are experiencing CRC errors or dropped connections, turn off "Selective Reject" in V.42 by issuing ATS27=64. --------------------------------------------------------------- RAPIDCOMM VOICE --------------------------------------------------------------- 36. You Get the Message "Wrong Token Error 1001" This error occurs when a greeting or auxiliary message is recorded when calling in remotely to RapidComm Voice without pressing pound (#) following the recording. --------------------------------------------------------------- 37. Monitor Function Doesn't Work Dual functionality of modem and LAN does not support the monitor function at this time. --------------------------------------------------------------- 38. Auto Detect Won't Work Auto Detect doesn't work when set to Voice/Data/Fax when receiving a fax from some modems. The default setting for RapidComm Voice Auto Detect that is shipped with your modem is set to Data/Fax, so Auto Detect should work. (%VER Troubleshooting v5.56.1)Download Driver Pack
