6) GENERAL TROUBLESHOOTING
=======================
Locating the appropriate port to connect your PortGear Ethernet 10
------------------------------------------------------------------
The PortGear Ethernet 10 connects to your computer via the USB port.
To find the USB port, look for the USB symbol on the side, rear or
front of your computer. If you have only one USB port and a device
is already connected to it, disconnect the device and plug in the
PortGear Ethernet 10. You can also connect the PortGear Ethernet 10
to a USB hub connected to your computer.
If you cannot find a port featuring the USB symbol, consult your
computer documentation for USB port availability and support.
What to do if your PortGear Ethernet 10 is not detected by Windows
------------------------------------------------------------------
If your PortGear Ethernet 10 is not detected by the operating system,
here are a few things you should check:
Is USB Support enabled?
-----------------------
If your computer features a USB port, in all likelihood your
computer supports USB. However, USB support may not be enabled in
the system setup program (also called BIOS). Verify that USB
support is enabled in the BIOS. Consult your computer
documentation for instructions.
Is Plug & Play BIOS enabled?
----------------------------
Newer computers feature a Plug and Play ready BIOS. Verify that
Plug & Play BIOS is enabled in the BIOS. Consult your computer
documentation for instructions.
NOTE: If while in the computer setup program you come across a
setting for Legacy Mode for USB devices, we recommend that you
not change this setting. This feature is related to providing USB
support at boot time for USB keyboards and mice. This feature has
no effect on your PortGear Ethernet 10.
Does your version of Windows support USB?
-----------------------------------------
Refer to the operating system compatibility section for
information on support for your operating system: Windows 95,
Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 98 and Windows 2000.
Operating system compatibility
------------------------------
Windows 95
The original version of Windows 95 does not contain native support
for USB. Depending on when you originally bought your computer or
installed Windows 95, you may or may not have a version of Windows
95 capable of USB support. Supported Windows 95 versions include
4.00.950B or 4.00.950C (these are technically referred to as OSR2.x).
To verify the version of your operating system, do the following:
1.Click Start, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
2.Double-click the System icon.
If your version is not 4.00.950B or 4.00.950C, please contact your
computer manufacturer or Microsoft for an update.
Microsoft provides a USB Supplement to enable USB support for
Windows 95 (versions 4.00.950B or 4.00.950C). This supplement is
not installed as part of a regular installation of Windows 95.
It is located in a folder on your Windows 95 (OSR2) compact disc.
To determine if USB support is enabled for Windows 95, do the
following:
1. Click Start, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click the System icon.
3. Select the Device Manager tab.
4. Expand the Universal Serial Bus Controllers item.
You should see both Host Controller and USB Root Hub items. If
either of these items appear with an "x" or exclamation point "!",
contact your computer manufacturer for assistance. If you do not
see these items, you must install the USB Supplement.
To install the USB Supplement, do the following:
1. On the Windows 95 (OSR2) compact disc, locate the folder
<CD Drive>:\OSR2\USBSUPP (where <CD Drive>: is your compact
disc drive).
2. Double-click USBSUPP.EXE and follow any on screen prompts.
The next time you start Windows 95 a dialog box appears indicating
new hardware has been found. Follow the instructions outlined
in the Windows 95 Software Installation section of the Setup
Guidelines.
To verify that the correct USB driver is installed for Windows 95:
1. Open an Explorer window.
2. Locate the folder <Boot Drive>:\windows\system (where
<Boot Drive> is the letter of your Windows 95 boot drive).
3. Right-click on usbenet.sys, and then click Properties.
4. Select the Version tab.
5. Verify that description reads "Xircom USB-Ethernet Driver for Win95"
Windows NT 4.0
No version of Windows NT 4.0 provides native support for USB.
Xircom provides USB support for Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 3
or later via the drivers supplied on your PortGear Ethernet 10
compact disc. You must apply Service Pack 3 or later to your Windows
NT 4.0 installation before attempting to install the USB drivers from
your PortGear Ethernet 10 compact disc. If Service Pack 3 or later has
already been applied, follow the instructions outlined in the Windows
NT 4.0 Software Installation section of the Setup Guidelines.
To verify the correct USB driver is installed for Windows NT 4.0:
1. Open an Explorer window.
2. Locate the folder <Boot Drive>:\winnt\system32\drivers
(where <Boot Drive> is the letter of your Windows NT boot drive).
3. Right-click on USBENET.SYS, and then click Properties.
4. Select the Version tab.
5. Verify that description reads "Xircom USB-Ethernet Driver for
NT 4.0"
Windows 98 and Windows 2000
Windows 98 and Windows 2000 provide native USB support. No updates
are necessary. Follow the instructions outlined in the Windows 98
and Windows 2000 Software Installation section of the Setup
Guidelines.
To determine if USB support is operating normally for Windows 98,
do the following:
1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click the System icon.
3. Select the Device Manager tab.
4. Expand the Universal Serial Bus Controllers item.
Both Host Controller and USB Root Hub items are present and
confirm USB support. If either of these items appear with an "x"
or exclamation point "!", contact your computer manufacturer for
assistance.
To determine if USB support is operating normally for Windows 2000,
do the following:
1. Click Start, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click the System icon.
3. Select the Hardware tab.
4. Click Device Manager.
5. Expand the Universal Serial Bus Controllers item.
Both Host Controller and USB Root Hub items are present and confirm
USB support. If either of these items appear with an "x" or
exclamation point "!", contact your computer manufacturer for
assistance.
Using USB Viewer to check your Windows 98 USB setup
Included on your Windows 98 compact disc is a program called USB
Viewer for inspecting your current USB setup. USB Viewer is part
of a technical reference package called the Sample Resource Kit.
To install the Windows 98 Sample Resource Kit, do the following:
1. On the Windows 98 compact disc, locate the folder
<CD Drive>:\TOOLS\RESKIT(where <CD Drive> is the letter of your
compact disc drive).
2. Double-click SETUP.EXE and follow any on screen prompts.
To use USB Viewer:
1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Windows 98 Resource Kit,
and then click Tools Management Console.
2. Select the U to Z item under Tools A to Z.
3. Double-click USB Viewer.
